Bulking, Good Progress But I Want More

Great points guys-
moderation is the key then? I definitely think that adding cardio and cutting back on hamburger helper will help my gains be leaner. I may eat it from time to time (like every other day, instead of 3x a day) but will moderate it. I am just worried about eating lean, because since I made this thread I have lost two pounds after being scared to gain more fat…and being “naturally” skinny it could come off easy… I have mostly been having whey, oats, chicken breast, eggs, vegetables, milk, olive oil, and yoplait yogurt

That is why you need to be careful who you listen to. I was a very skinny kid. I have a very fast metabolism. I can diet on way more calories than I am eating now. Pasta would have only helped me get bigger. I don’t recommend it all day everyday, but I do not agree with those acting like it needs to cast out of your diet like demons to a Catholic Priest.

That was a funny ass anaolgy, and thanks for the guidance

Do you think I should focus on macros (which, in my understanding, is the ratio of proteins:carbs:fats?) or is that not really necessary?

I think I need to make something clear…when I write that I don’t keep track, that doesn’t mean I don’t have “general knowledge” of how much I am eating. It means I am not worried about whether I am exactly 300-500 cals within some variable number. Your body is pretty complex. I have spent years studying it from different perspectives. I know how variable the response can be simply from one day to the next based on many things from stress to activity level.

If you climbed the stairs today instead of taking the elevator…are you taking into account just the walk up the stairs or also the time it takes for your body to normalize afterwards, your overall activity level throughout the rest of the day, whether that particular activity causes more caloric burn due to microinjuries or the other thousands of variables you face everyday?

A guy with training in that area saying he doesn’t keep track is not the same as someone without that knowledge doing the same.

Keep general track of food intake…but don’t hold yourself back by thinking your body gives a shit what specific number the calculator reads.

Alright X thanks great points…
So if I eat more quality food (from the list I posted on previous page) and cut back just a little on the hamburger helper, and just record total cals per day (around 4000) and adjust accordingly, will I be ok?
I am just still confused on proteins and fats and carbs, and how much I need. Some people swear by high fat high protein low carb, and some swear by high carb low fat high protein.
Am I overthinking this? Should I just focus on cals and cut back the crappy food a little?

BTW I have been stuck at 234 for a solid three to four weeks. I am going shopping now, I will start recording cals instead of estimating in my head.

I just tried this ezekiel bread wow it is horrible, how do you guys make it good? butter?

  • you posted a thread about walking for cardio the other day.
  • You need to stop walking and start sprinting…

It’s not going to hurt you. It will help you gain muscle and lose fat. Maybe once every 10 days, because lifting alone will do what you want it to.

Take BCAA’s and protein before hand. I’d do it mid day. You always want to have a couple of meals in your system before sprint. Protein and carb meal afterwards.

Your diet is ridiculous…

WTF is Chili Mac?
and 3 times a day?

Seriously?

This is where someone needs to chime in… Use the search function, please.

Read…Read…Squat…Read…Squat…

I cleaned up the chili mac and bs. My diet now consists of shakes (whey, oats, pb, banana), chicken, vegetables, milk, bread.

I really don’t know which one to do…walking or running…Some say running burns muscle, some say it causes you to “gain muscle” . Some say walking is better for conserving muscle, vice versa. Isnt “anaerobic” technically exercise under twenty minutes anyways? So to get the real cardio benefits, wont extended walks be better?

I am very unsatisfied with my skinny frame right now so as you can see I am scared of any muscle loss.

Actually heres a more important question for now:

How the FUCK do you guys eat 4000+ cals a day with healthy food??

Chicken breast 4 OZ= 120 calories
vegetables= basically none
bread= about 120 (assuming I even eat any considering I now time my carbs to morning and after workout-like recommended)

so 240 calories in that example…
I have to have at least three shakes with whey, oats, banaan, and pb to get my cals up.

It’s not that hard man, don’t be afraid of good fats. Add a ahot (20ml) of olive oil to each meal, theres an extra 150 cals per meal, so an extra 900 cal per day! It may not taste the best but that’s not what you’re worrying about, you’re worrying about muscle!

Good point I forgot to mention the olive oil.

So here is an example meal plan:

shake (whey oats pb banana) 600 (approximately-underestimating)
meal- chick+bread+veggies+oil 540
shake 600
meal 540
meal 540
shake 600

…3420. Sounds good. If I dont gain on this Ill up it more next week.

The thing is, how would I bring olive oil to school? besides looking like an idiot and bringing out a bottle and pouring a small amount into a cup and drinking it. Then when people ask why and I tell them, but I am not big enough yet so it would be slightly embarassing. jk but really how without having to bring the whole bottle?

Also, is the banana and oats before bed bad? Or should I not worry about that minor crap because im skinny?

My sprint sessions last around 20 minutes, including warm up. Short burst are way different than long distance jogs/runs. I guess you can try to walk up hills and stuff?

Its not hard to eat 3000-3500-4000 calories a day from healthy food.

Do not eat oats beofre bed, and id leave the fruit for breakfast or lunch as well.

Click my hub/profile and go to my favorite articles, there are a few nutrition articles at the top you should read.

Also eating ever hour to every 2 hours all day will help you get those calories in.

Balance a big portion of your carbs around your workouts.

Also one mistake I made starting out was not drinking enough water.
Drink ATLeast a Gallon a day. I didn’t think it was possible at first but I’m drinking a little over a gallon a day.
Peeing a lot, but its worth it. I’m pissing clear hahaha.

Plus with all that water passing thru you, your nutrient uptake will be larger/greater and quicker.

No carbs around bed…broscience. Sorry. I eat >250g of carbs AFTER 7pm.

How? Because in one sitting I can put down 1500 calories or so. For instance around 20 ounces of steak, over 600gs of potatoes mashed…

See.

^^^^ you can do that, you can also start jogging every day… sarcasim
I’m not sure if u are joking though, lol, my fault if you are.

Why would you put 1500 calories in your body at one sitting?
Just curious, hahaha. I don’t see a good reason.

Id def. Break that meal in half and give some of those mashed potatoes to my dog hahaha.

Eat half now and the rest in an hour and a half. Get your tabalism burning and let your body actually digest some of those nutrients.

Picture looks F’N tasty though. Good job

I said around bed…what grade are you in, lol. 7 p.m?

I don’t even train before 7 p.m

You eat your 600 g’s of white potatoes mashed and go to sleep. Do that every night for a year and see where it gets you…

Sleep is not a physical activity dude.

I don’t care if you are trying to gain weight. The body does what its designed to do…
