BroScience VS You Guys

I like deadlifts. More than squats, at least. Actually more than most lifts. I like just tearing the bar off the floor and not having to worry about a catch or an eccentric.

I can’t pull anywhere near as heavy as you but can do 3x bodyweight.
If deadlifts did not get you bigger and stronger, would you still perform them for the sake of joy?
If I could get the same results from sitting on my arse eating pizza as I did from deadlifting, I know which I’d choose.

It’s most likely my philosophy background, but it’s what I observe pretty frequently: equating the effect of an action with the action itself. Most love the effect of lifting, but I imagine only a masochist would actually enjoy lifting itself.

For me, lifting is something in between me and my goals, and I accomplish it because I have to, but if I could just rub a lamp and become the strongest human to ever live, I wouldn’t cry myself to sleep because I didn’t get to train for it.

Meanwhile, I find that it is the things I HATE the most that are the most effective. I absolutely hate heavy pulls, loaded front carries, yoke walks, squatting, etc, and it’s working very well.

It goes hand in hand for me personally. Yes, doing deadlifts benefits my goals in the long run (though at the moment, trying to bring up my comparatively weak squat, so I squeeze them in when I can), and probably wouldn’t do them if that weren’t the case. That being said, if I truly hated deadlifts (talking conventional here for the sake of simplicity), I’m sure that I would find a way to reach my goals and almost never have to perform a true conventional deadlift. But, luckily, that isn’t the case. Of course I only pull a little over 2x body weight, so maybe I’m just too weak to hate them. Haha.

On a side note, I loathe doing bicep curls, and only started doing them recently to combat my recurring elbow issues. That, unfortunately, was the only thing I’ve found to keep that in check. Maybe one day I can find something to replace the curlz.

Well, I hate myself for not being stronger. Does that count as masochism?

My understanding of masochism or more about a love of pain rather than simple inherent self loathing, but I can imagine that self loathing can manifest as a love of pain as some sort of redemption seeking.

I only took one psychology course, haha.

You bet a whole load of money what now? Cheeky sod what do you know about my diet XD Wind up that’s what you are. Don’t mistake my tone though, I’m not angry or anything I’m actually really grateful for the info you posted. I think you’re cheeky though. Leave the assumptions out next time. Also walking away with four exercises for a routine called the big five is ridiculous, I don’t care what you are in the US.

Said with love though man and much respect. Congrats for where you are in life.

Nope, read again mate.

I came here for help, I’m not daft.

It’s a nice break to find someone on a forum that reads into something and tries to understand it rather than make an assumption and take every chance to prove some kind of supremacy. You give me hope for weight lifting forums.

I walked away with four exercises for a regime with the number five in it… do you not get what I’m pointing out here???

The assumptions are endless, JUST ASK!

OP is so weighing in, I swear I’ve never wanted to leave a forum so bad. These assumptions are driving me ballistic.

Where in the ape-nut-ball-sack did I harp on about isolations being bro-science?

Flip’s a cheeky sod! Wahahaha

Hey guys,

Thank you so much to all of you that posted with information helping me out. I’ve been away for a while and so much content has appeared that it’s taking me a while to get through it, though it’s literally like a treasure trove of information so I’m so stoked and happy to see it.

Just to let you all know, since I originally started this thread, I got straight to work on a 5x5 program and it’s really paying off. I’ve got some great muscle, I’m starting to see my abs for the first time in a little while now (I was once at a point that if I looked down I couldn’t see my feet!). I know you’ve all probably looked awesome for a while but for me, that’s some heartwarming stuff right there and though I’ve put a lot of effort and study into this it’s largely because of people like the guys who’ve posted helpful information in this thread that have worked hard and want to give back because you understand. You get it. And you’re great people. I really want to say thank you and I will do my best to respond to every one that posted. Here’s where you guys can tune out.

If you’re one of the guys that made assumptions, argued with other posters (not about routines, I mean the snotty kind of arguing) essentially all you did, was waste space and get in the way of posters who have had amazing content to share. You need to know something. If you lift weights, and you do it really really well, it is NOT, absolutely NOT the only qualification you need to be a politician or a life-coach or king of world. Do you know how I and others know this? Because you are really, really bad at it. If it wasn’t for all the other guys putting in all that effort and direction and my own will if I was someone else I would have just left the forum. In fact, a couple of guys HAVE left this site. I’ve had the misfortune of hearing bad things about T-Nation posters off-line. Tell me, how does it sit with you that you are driving people away? Sharpen up. Please. Luckily, I’m the kind of guy, that uses people like you as motivation. But other people don’t always react like that. And honestly, do one thing for me. Don’t respond to this post. Just check yourself out, if you think what I’m saying doesn’t apply to you, then OK go your merry way. If you think it does apply to you. Also don’t respond. I’m not interested in an argument, I’m interested in what the other poster are interested in. Learning and making room for people who need and want to change their lives to have the ability to do so. Just make the right changes.

Wait what happened in this thread? I posted once here on the first page, and my name’s coming up on page 5? God damn. I guess I need to read this…

I’m not sure who or what you’re whining about, so I’ll just say this. Look in the mirror after a year and see if your treasure trove actually contains fool’s gold. I sincerely hope you’re taking in the right information.

Just for the maiden quote, I think you’re my new favourite poster.

LOL

kinda relevant seeing as it’s in the advert:

I have actually done that thing where you step on a rake and it whips up and smacks you in the face. It hurt like a bitch but the worst of it was knowing that my life is pretty much a cartoon.
