In his mastering the deadlift series of articles, EC says you shouldn’t go longer than 4 weeks on sumo deads without a break to avoid injuring your hips. Would it be OK to go 4 weeks on, 1 week break then repeat?

There are SO many factors that can have an influence on whether or not you need a break, and if you do, for how long, it would be pretty impossible to give a definitite anwer for everyone.
A week off sounds good tho. See how you feel basically!

After 3-4 weeks, you need a week break. i would advise on the back off week drag a sled. Unless you are really built to pull-long limbs and shirt back-DL takes a lot out of you. Wide sumo is even worse. When Ed Coan pulled sumo he pulled conventional in training up to 5-8 weeks before a meet. WSB insists on suit bottoms or briefs when box squatting because the beating hip stake wide squatting.
Bottom line, mix it up and cycle different things in to avoid repetitive motion injuries from popping up.
