Yeah that was my main point by saying I have no idea if he was the right guy to listen to or not, and it makes no difference to me whether or not he’s the right guy. I ran his program for a while and loved it.
Haha sorry man. When I get to rambling it just pours out of me. I’m a quiet guy in person but I sure do have a lot I express here in my log.
Thank you for the response and you covered my questions perfectly man. I was mostly wondering if a log would be a decent purchase/worthwhile for my goals. It sounds like it’s not the end all-be all of pressing, but a good tool to use and having an axle would be more important
The issue is all mine. I do loads of reading off of a screen at work which I find hard. And when I get home my eyes have had enough.
Yeah - and axle is just an all round arsehole thing to use, but brilliant. Its so less forgiving. If you slow down with a normal bar the weight catches up with you and the bar goes a bit lighter for a split second. So you get a small moment where you can re attack the weight. With an axle - no dice. You slow down and that’s it. But this is a good thing I feel. As it more “honest”. If you can do it with an axle - its yours. No screwing about with different bars, or putting weights at the end of the bar to get more flex.
Yeah, my total lack of sympathy doesn’t help, haha. I’ve tried helping people a few times, and the instant a complaint pops up my solution is typically telling them “Maybe this isn’t for you”. Not great for problem solving, haha.
The gym toys for rewards things is legit. I got myself an Ironmind axle once I could curl my Rogue one for 300 reps. You definitely deserve something nice for getting through this.
Well, to be fair, I’m assuming these people came to you for help. The last thing you want is someone saying your help didn’t deliver because the effort wasn’t there, or that it’s “too hard and there is no way someone can do this”
I guess I just assume people coming to you for something like a program would have seen/read about the way you train.
I know if you did release a program, I’d definitely get it… and then proceed to sit on it for a year or two just like I did with deepwater. Taking that initial step is scary to me.
Good haha. It’s not going to become a regular thing, but having a new bar or piece of equipment around makes things a little less monotonous. Plus, I’ll be starting from square one, so every day is a PR.
Not sure what to say about this. I’ll leave the quote there for absurdity.
I did the exact same thing, haha. You read the program the first time and go “Ok, yeah, that’s f**kin crazy: not happening” …and then the goddamn seed gets planted. And then you catch yourself re-reading it and thinking “…well MAAAAYBE I could make that work”
Before you know it, you’re in between sets 7 and 8 on squat day 1 and wondering what the hell you signed up for, haha.
I’m ok at writing WORKOUTS rather than programs. @voxel had a monthly thread going for a while where I’d pitch in some evil idea I came up with. I can even come up with decent short term approaches for specific movements, but getting it to all work together is magic.
New implement PRs are legit: great way to always be progressing. And those curls were done when I blew out my ACL: I had nothing else to put my energy into, haha.
Yeah I do remember reading some of these but wasn’t sure where to add them in during my runs with 531. I’d feel a bit more confident now to figure out where to drop them in as necessary now.
Brian’s program has some similar stuff in the form of mindset challenges in lieu of conditioning on select days… they look absolutely horrendous and I plan on doing every single one
Firstly, thanks for tagging me in.
I fear however I lack sufficient background info as I haven’t been aware of your log and haven’t followed the last programs you were doing.
I am a huge admirer of Brian. That said, his style of programming is not for me and I wouldn’t recommend it to a wide range of people either.
If you’re goal is to get strong and athletic as fuck, you are going in the right direction if you’re following Brian’s work.
As for the log: Definitely wait for a 12"! I don’t know what country you’re in or if you plan to compete but it’s fsr more commlnly used in strongman.
Just judging by some of his videos and reading through the program I’d definitely agree with that. It’s only 12 weeks, and if I hate it, I hate it but I’m going to do my best to see it through until the end and give it 100% effort
Awesome man, that seems to be the general consensus. 12" log and axle it is! I appreciate the reply, I’ve been following along in your log for a few weeks now. You’re crushing it
Deadlift, 8 sets to 101 reps at 300lb (6 mins rest or less)
17, 14, 14, 13, 12, 10, 10, 11
Squat 3x10 at 135lb (2 mins rest)
Planks and sit ups
First and last set
I don’t ever want to deadlift again. I was having what I believe to be mini panic attacks the final minute of rest between sets. After 2 mins of sitting next to the fan, my heart would calm down, breathing would be ok and I’d just chill and then walk around, trying to relieve my glute pump. Once I knew I was ready for the next set my heart would start racing and I’d start sweating profusely. My body knew I was going to lift again and it felt like it was begging me not to.
I got a bit manic towards the end of that final set, and did an extra rep for a final “goodbye, hope to never see you again” to deepwater Intermediate deadlifts.
Strict press, 8 sets to 100 reps at 105lb
12, 12, 11, 11, 10, 9, 9, 9 Total- 83
BB curls 1x10 at 70, 4x10 at 80
Planks and sit ups
Up at 530 this AM, took the dog on a 2 mile walk when the sun started coming out. Did this workout fasted, and I was getting super lightheaded around rep 3-4 of each set. Had to regain composure in the rack position and the keep grinding.
Pretty happy overall with my strict press progress. I wasnt completing the 10x10 with 90lb at the end of beginners, so it seems like my press has gotten a bit better. That was the goal.
Side note- had to bring in my belt a notch. It was doing nothing while pressing, so it seems like I’m continuing to be on a fat/weight loss trajectory… haven’t weighed myself in a while, but I am curious where I’m at. Maybe tomorrow.
Opens up a ton of avenues dude! On Deep Water advanced, where it had “front squat and press” as a workout, I did log vipers instead. Much more intuitive for me. And vipers are just awesome. Super excited for you.
Yeah that’s what I’m.hoping, seems there is a lot I can do with it. Never heard of viper press except in your log but I’ll check it out and see how to do it.
I’m extremely excited to dig into this thing.
Haha not sure who that is, but if they’re strong as fuck, I’m in man.
