Audible Clicking in Right Shoulder

I have a clicking sound in my right shoulder. It’s more pronounced while bench pressing. If I bench with my elbows coming down against the side of my torso then it’s not as bad. If I just move my arm in a bench pressing motion it can be heard and felt. If I do it with my elbows all the way out then it’s a double click. I have no pain at all and it’s been there for years, but I’ve never benched a significant amount of weight in my life. Now that I’m taking training seriously, is this something I should be worried about? What could be the cause?

Thanks
Dante

to me it “sounds” like a bone spur due to an injury of some type. that may be result of a tear mabe minor and as a result 2 bones rubbing together where the tear occured. it might be nothing, but go see an orthopedics
person to see if there is a problem. from what you say you could be ok now and 25 yrs later may have issues…

When the rough articular cartilage on the head of your humerus rubs on the rough cartilage in your shoulder socket, it sometimes creates this noise. It’s called crepitus. I’m guessing that’s what is going on with you. I’ve had the same thing in my knee for years. Usually the rule is, if it doesn’t hurt, don’t worry too much about it. Maybe limit the range of motion if it really worries you, or just keep your elbows in a bit.

It’s either that, or the head of your humerus is just clicking on the end of the socket at the end range of motion. I have a couple of clients with the same problem with their jaw. If they open it too wide, it “pops” but pops right back in when they close it.

I’d say get it checked if YOU feel it is an issue, but if you have had it for years, it should be fine.

Thanks for your opinions guys. As long as I have no pain I’ll just wait til I see the doc for my annual in a couple months and see if he’ll refer me to someone.
