Am I Overtraining?

G’Day,
This is my first post and I was after some information on overtraining. I have been experiencing muscle twitching in my legs and my eye lids and have read in the past that this may be a symptom of overtraining. I am currently doing a full body workout twice a week using Chad’s set/rep bible parameters.
E.g. Monday
Squats 6 * 6
Palms facing chin ups 4 * 12
Bench Press 6 * 6
Lateral Raises 5 * 10

Thursday
Sumo Deadlifts 6 * 6
Incline Bench Press 5 * 10
Bb Curls 4 * 12
French Press 4 * 12

The problem I have is I am a shift worker. My shifts can vary from week to week so I am unable to get into a solid eating and sleeping routine. Just after any feedback on how much this will effect my recovery and whether I should tweak my program a little.
Thanks for any advice you have.

Honestly if you asre overtraining on a two day a week schedule I say stick to it over trained or not.

If it is the case you have a server need to up your work capacity. CW’s programs are all about freshness and frequency. 2 days aint much bro. Just keepat it. I would look to diet, and rest as far as your problems. Also maybe life stress. Something to address in your life.

Hope that helps,
Phill

First, I don’t think muscle twitching and red eyes mean overtraining, but may mean that you are not sleeping too well, and may be dehydrated.

Second, I can’t say if you are overtraining, but it sounds like your not training to failure on each lift because the reps stay the same.

Best guess is that you could handle at least around twice that volume right now before overtraining, and would definitely get better results with a third day, but if the squats and deads are pretty heavy go light with any more leg exercises (lyiing leg curls and 1-leg squats).

How much are you using for the squats and deads?

Agree with the above posters. You’ll also notice Chad talks about not going to failure with each set, always having enough in reserve for the next set.

You can give it your all but you’re not wanting to overload your central nervous system. Hopefully your last reps aren’t with more weight than you can handle as you could be experiencing severe straining which may lead to the symptoms you’ve mentioned. eg. Sore eyes and headaches from straining until blood vessels in your eyes burst.

If you’re a shift worker try and carry with you a couple of protein bars to last you through your shift. Go to the shop, buy a box of protein bars, or even something with nutritional substance such as apricot muesli bars or almond/nut bars. And make sure to drink more water than you think you should be drinking.

Stress could well be a factor as I have been diagosed with mild anxiety by a doctor in the past. Its strange as I have performed a lot more volume in the past doing traditional 5 day bodybuilding routines without these symptoms. I have also performed routines from this site with more volume but have not suffered this constant muscle twitching. Maybe it is related to something else. Thanks for the feedback.

To answer the first part my reps do change. One week I may do 6 * 6 for squats the next I may do 5 * 10 and the next I may do 4 * 12 trying to say within Chad’s recomended parameters.
I lack strength in these core lifts but I am working on it. I squat about 110kg 66 and I deadlift 120kg 66.
Thanks for your feedback.

The symptoms I suffer aren’t actually sore or red eyes it is the actal eye lid constantly flickering like a muscle twitch. I have read somewhere that this can be from overtraining. Thanks for the nutrition stuff I do usually bring a bag of goodies where ever I go!

I’ve heard that a twitching eyelid means you are calcium deficient. I have no idea if that is true or not but my right eyelid twitched non stop for months and increasing my calcium solved it. Just an idea.

Thanks can’t hurt to give it a try.

Hi,
Are you using Carbolin 19 or any other supplement? I too am a shift worker and have noticed muscle and especially eye twitching. I have recently started using Carbolin 19.

Get that twitch checked out by a doctor, if you haven’t already. It could be serious (or not), but at least you know.

Secondly, how is your diet? Are you eating enough?

Shift work is a major disruption to your sleeping routine, and there isn’t much you can do about this. If it’s shit-work, you may want to start looking around for another job.

No not using this supplement I only use protein, glutamine, creatine and multivitamins.

I had the same thing going on… I increased my water consumption and that seemed to help.

Are you progressing?

If so, you can probably rule out overtraining.

I’ve experienced symptoms similar to what you’ve mentioned when I’ve gone through heavy training cycles in the past and thought they were a sign that my nervous system was being stressed. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you don’t overdo it.

I tend to get the eye twitch problem as a result of two things - too much caffeine and too long looking at a computer screen. What do you do at work?

No i’m not progressing and probably haven’t progressed for some time that is why i have started doing full body workouts to try and spark some new growth. I will continue training in this fashion and may try Chad’s new program and see how i go
