I went to hang out with the strongman peeps this morning and got to see what it’s like…
I think the only thing I won’t really be able to simulate is the atlas stone lift/load and of course the tire flip…
But I plan on getting a tire here shortly…Graham(the chairmen) got rid of all his lighter stuff years ago, because there hasn’t been an interest shown by many females. I’m going to ask if maybe he could get me a tire, so I can practice at his place as well…he has 80lb concrete bags, and kegs of all sizes, but the stones are too heavy for me
And I really have to work on my cleans! Also I think I’ll be working on front squats more…or at least squatting down and picking up heavy things! From now on, Sunday’s will be my strongman days, and I will just through the events, and try to get stronger and faster!
Julie-if you’re reading, did you get to practice with the stones before your comp?[/quote]
Hey there. No I didn’t get to practice with the stones. I didn’t find it that difficult because I have such long arms.
You may want to pm Kalle. He gave me lot’s of good advice. I think he may also be able to tell you how to simulate the atlas stones using plates. I recall seeing a video on Youtube.
Oh, and I didn’t get to flip a tire
The only one they had was 800+ pounds…
I’m on the look out though for own…
I will be quite the sight flipping my tire down the sidewalk, and walking back and forth with my kettlebells…when I get some extra dough I plan on getting two 90lb ones…I’m not sure of what the weights will be for the contest though! So I’ll go heavier on Sundays, but use the 90lb ones for speed…I’ve been so naive about this strongman stuff, I didn’t know the events were timed as well before I started reading more about it!
I ordered ‘Personal Best,’ a book by a pretty well-known strongWOman…so I’m eagerly waiting for that!

Try calling a local farm equipment company or tire manufacturer. I’ve heard that companies here will give their old tires away because it saves them dumping them. It may be Canada only but it’s worth a try if you have room to flip it. I believe it was TNTCdn who told me that when I trained with him and his girls.
Hello!
I DO NOT like going to the gym at 5pm…
My son has been home from school sick the last two days, so I haven’t been able to go in the mornings…It’s a freakin meat fest in the there, with more guys strutting around and shootin the shit, than training
shoulder presses-4x12x65
Lat pulldown-3x12x70
Incline bench- 3x12x35s
High pulls-(fast) 3x12x45(new ‘fun,’ exercise)
OH press-palms in-3x10x25s
Lat raises-3x10x15s
DB hammer curls-3x10x20s
Barbell curl-3x10x40lb
cardio(ick)
Treadmill-15min walking up hill, jogging, etc…My knees really suck, and it’s been hurting to jog…I’ve even tried to go faster, jog uphill, etc…nothing helps, so I don’t know if it’s my technique, my shoes, my weight, or maybe a combo of everything…
Being able to run a mile in a decent time, without dying is a personal goal of mine, so I hope it can still happen!!
well, I made a weird discovery last night…my knees were really aching after my jogging escapades…so I was just laying on the couch bending and straightening my legs while I had my hand on my knee…and I could FEEL things grinding in there…EW!
And in both knees…and when I was climbing the stairs to go up to bed I felt the same thing, and you can HEAR the grinding as well…I’ve heard and felt it before, just never said anything to the hubby…we are guessing this isn’t normal, so now he is prodding me to go get checked out…
I always thought it was just the way my knees were.

I have had all sorts of knee pain due to injuries and knee surgery in high school. It has made crazy grinding noises ever since. I would suggest (especially if you want to be in good health for your strong man comp) that you get off the treadmill (running and walking). You may be way better off cycling or something. Trust me, they won’t get better the longer you do it, it will only get worse.
Just one more thing, I noticed that my knees have improved significantly with mobility work (X band walks and such). My knees used to ache in the cold weather, walking up stairs, if I sat with my legs folded, and when I was in a squating position for more than a second. Now I have none of those issues. Even the grinding noises have reduced quite a bit.
Good luck and when it comes to your knees don’t be stubborn! I had to learn that the hard way.

Ewww. Please get it checked out. In the meantime, I suggest the elliptical rather than the treadmill. The few times I used a treadmill, my knees felt like they had broken glass in them the next day. I found it unnatural because your body is adjusting to the speed of the equipment and I found there was drag on my knees.
I didn’t get it at all with the elliptical plus there was no impact or jarring. Other people may have different experiences.
I did find my knees worsened with age just with daily life until I started lifting weights. Now I rarely have knee pain.

Hijack:
Ouro, your knees may not be painful, but they make horrible noises that pain me.
I did lots of treadmill running last year leading up to my race…something about running on ice in freezing temps just didn’t motivate me to go outside… anyways, I always made sure to ice my knees afterwards and I think it helped. My knees were much happier though once I moved outside. I know the weather sucks right now, but once spring comes (if it ever does), try to do most of your cardio outside.
Thanks SB- I am very stubborn when it comes to going to the doc…the last time I went for my back, denying anything was wrong, but there was! grrr. I just hate getting bad news…similar to the reason I don’t open my bills, LOL!!!
Julie and Court- I switch up the cardio often…but my knees have actually been bothering me before I really was putting a lot of effort into it…I just thought it was normal…I really feel it at the end of a leg day…oi.I don’t feel it while I’m training, but I feel it within a few hours, or when I have to climb up the stairs.

Hello!
I got weighed in after my Biggest Loser class this morning, and I lost two pounds! But then I weighed myself on the scale that was used last week, and it was only a 1 lb lost  I think I’m going to go with the pound, cause I don’t feel I earned two this week!
The class was a bunch of stations set up, about 8 circuits that you rotated through for a minute each, and we did this twice…it took about 30min total…so then I biked for 20min and walked uphill for 10, then did abs.
Tomorrow is strongman training  And I plan on going through the events, aside from the tire flipping, cause there tire is too heavy A bunch of the guys are getting ready for a comp next week, so I expect they will be all wired up!
ugh, my knees are so achey from all the jumping and running this morning
Thanks COD, weight training doesn’t have this affect on me…
Can’t wait to get to the Doc and see what they say…I got some knee braces, and some Move-Free stuff to take…
I went to foot locker earlier to get some advice on shoes, but they weren’t much help…
My problem is, is that I have a size 10.5 foot, but they hardly carry that size in stores, which makes it hard to try them on! So I always resort to mens shoes…
