A Work in Progress

I hope everyone had a good Holiday yesterday!

I finally made it back to the gym this morning!! It was good…I think its been over two weeks…still have a cough too, but don’t feel so out of it that I couldnt go…

I meet with the trainer tomorrow morning…Im excited to talk with him, but no so excited to get my body comp done :l It’s all for the greater good, at least thats what I keep telling myself…

Do you have a list of questions to ask him? How’re you going to know if he knows what he’s talking about?

I don’t have a list, but I have a few things I will ask him, yes…mostly if he’s ever worked with a woman who is trying to lose fat, and if he has, have other clients got good results…I was going to explain to him my goals, and just listen closely to what he has to say. I’m not looking for someone to just be my rep counter…

In the past couple weeks I managed to lose another pound…and I have been eating like crap and hadn’t been to the gym, go figure!

You never know if a trainer is any good until you work with him anyways. The guy has an impressive physique and he must know what it is to work hard. Every trainer is going to have different methods, if you decide to work with him then you need to commit. By that I mean follow his plan to the letter and don’t second guess anything. I always tell my clients that I need 12 weeks of dedication to a plan.
Make sure he knows about the PN coaching and schedules your training accordingly.

The biggest mistake I see people doing when working with a trainer is second guessing the techniques and not keeping up the intensity of the training on days when you are not working together.
I hope it works out for you!

Well, the meeting this morning went well. He is very personable and I feel comfortable around him and thats important.

He was surprised by my weight and says I carry it well(good thing I’m somewhat tall!) and also have a lot of muscle…when he measured my thigh, he asked if I was relaxed or flexing:P …he is thinking that I have been training too heavy for awhile without enough, you guessed it cardio…

Which is why I have gained some muscle, but the stubborn layer of flab still exists…
I went ahead and paid for three sessions in advance starting next week!

And since he is a bodybuilder you can guess what direction he wants to go…high reps/little rest, get in/get out type training…I requested that we change up the set/rep scheme every few weeks so I don’t lose the base of strength I’ve worked so hard for, he agreed and was impressed.

Many of his clients are female and don’t have much experience I guess, but they all achieve good results with him. He also trains females for figure and fitness modeling…

I also told him that I just took and passed my PT cert exam, and he is more than willing to not just be my PT but to be a sort of mentor, and help me to get a job there when the time comes!! How cool is THAT?!

I’m glad it was a good experience. Are you going to link him to this log?

I don’t know if I’ve ever trained this way, but my arms are already sore…he had me doing 3sets of 15 with just enough rest to catch my breath and get a swig of water, whew!

I got a personal record on the bench press…After doing a few sets, he asked if I wanted to try for a 1RM… I got 2 reps of 135!! Not too bad for not benching in over two weeks…and this was after my shoulders were fried from doing other stuff…after that, I did cable flies paired with pushups…I thought I was going TO DIE!!

It feels really good to have someone there to push me along! He says that I am really strong…it’s nice to hear it from someone else
I’m only with him again for W and F…after that he will give me my plan and Im off on my own!

See you just needed someone to push you, maybe with accountability through him you will be shedding lbs. in no time. Keep up the good work. Congrats on 135!

Congrats on the bench PR!!!

Claire

Good job on the Bench! I knew you could do it!

Nice job on the bench. It’s so exciting to finally put the “big wheels” on!!!

Ya, it was pretty cool! THANKS!!

My shoulders are still sore from Monday…dang…Definitely got out of my comfort zone…Today is legs and I’m scared! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, that was fun…NOT!!

At the very end, I literally felt like I was going to puke…guess I’ve been missing out!

I don’t like working legs in any case…I’ve done all the exercises he had me do before, but my endurance just SUCKS ASS apparently!!
^

Here’s what he had me do to give you an idea…

Leg extensions-3x10x55(warmup)(5s rest)

Squats(10s rest)
1x10xbar
1x15x65lbs
2x15x85lbs
*He started leading me toward the Smith Machine, and I looked at him and said ‘I can use the big girl Squat Rack, tyvm!’ :stuck_out_tongue: I guess he’s still trying to get an idea of where I’m at, and he says most females he trains PREFER the smith machine…whatev, Not THIS girl ;)- He said my form is really good.
He has faith that I could and SHOULD do at a least one PL meet too…they hold meets at that gym all the time he says…we’ll see  Gotta lose the lbs first…I said I’d be happy at 170, but Victor(trainer) says he’d like to see me closer to 155-160! I’ve been there before…a looooong time ago, lol…

Walking Lunges
down and back was 1 set/no rest til you did one full set-15s rest
2x15-holding 10lb plates

Leg Presses
3x15xno weight-5-10s rest

Leg extensions(again)
3x10x30-10s rest in between sets
half way up and down, all the way up and down was 1 rep

Leg curl
3x15x55lbs
yep, 10s rest

Stiff leg Dl
3x15x20s(it was right about here I felt dizzy and pukey)

He thought that was funny!! grrr…

Woodchops each side?(no rest)
2x25x20lbs

15min hillwalking
8%incline@2.5mph, lol

Yep, I’m toast…what I’m learning so far, is that I’ve had all the programming correct, and the exercise selection has been good, but obviously I haven’t been pushing myself…Maybe I’ve been afraid, and that’s why I’ve held back and have been working at low reps and longer rests for so long…even doing accessory work though, I was standing around for that looong minute in between and sometimes longer.

Oh, I’m glad you’re getting good stuff from this, I was kinda worried after the dietician sucking.

He sounds like just what you needed

Sounds like you are enjoying your new program! I know I am a bit late, but congrats on the 135x2 PR! =D

Wouldn’t say I’m enjoying it! LOL!
I can barely walk today…And my shoulders are still sore from Monday! :open_mouth:

Have you started the precision nutrition coaching? What does it include? Is it just nutrition or do they give you workouts too?

yep, I started that back on the 24th of Nov…It’s pretty cool…Everyday there is a lesson, and you have homework and all that
They supply a weekly training program that gets changed every Sunday…you don’t have to follow it though…

So today was my last day with my trainer…He’s going to work on my program over the weekend and have it for me Monday…

I’m kinda bummed cause he wants me to stay at 3x15 for awhile, with rests long enough to take a drink…blech…I’ve gotten used to the 5-10rep range, and I love lifting heavy…wah. :frowning:
I wonder if I could sweet talk him into letting me change it up every few weeks…like 3x15, 3x8-10, and 4x5 or something like that…or I could just shut up!
He’s an older dude(about 43), so I think he is a little old school in his thinking…he’s a body builder after all, so that’s how he trains people…
He says he only trains in the low rep range off season to put on size, and says that I’m not trying to put on size, lol…
but that’s how I’ve ended up with the amount of muscle and strength I do have…

And you were doing so well LOL.
LISTEN to your trainer, do what he says and in 8 weeks if it’s not working AT ALL, then go back and change.

You’ve got muscle and strength, but if I’m not mistaken you want to lose some weight, right? Just keep up the intensity!!!
No, you will not get big or strong, but you will gain some muscle endurance and that is what you are missing. Done with short rest periods, you might just lose some pounds too. Keep that goal in mind.

You must find it more than a coincidence that the training methods he is recommending for you are pretty much the same thing that people on this forum have been telling you. I have to remind you that switching up your stuff to your liking hasn’t worked yet.
