A Completely Random Thread of Randomness

Usually at the bottom of the bag.

Why are model trains unattractive? It often requires a lot of attention to detail.

I can see the issue it taking up too much space in a house. But seems fairly harmless as a hobby.

I agree. There was an elderly couple in our neighborhood a while back and both of them had hobbies that took up a TON of space. He had model train hobby with a whole city surrounded by train tracks in their basement, and she had a decked out sewing/craft room.

They were so in love and their relationship was probably enhanced by their separate passions.

I’m sure that explanation will work.

Oh I don’t have a model train hobby, just of everything on the list it seems more mundane. And significantly less damaging than a gambling addiction….

To be fair, part of the reason I never got into it is the space necessary.

My 7th & 8th grade biology teacher/track coach was a model train builder. I only found out a couple years ago when we showed up to his house to take down a couple of trees over the separated garage.

Inside was a really intricate replica of the town he grew up in and surrounding area, along with little animated scaled people & everything. It was awesome.

He had a thing going where every Christmas season he would open it to the public for donations which would go to the March Of Dimes.

Unfortunately he passed away from cancer last year. He was a really good guy though.

That’s why I didn’t agree with the list. Some of those hobbies even looked pretty pleasant, like bird watching.

The big question is though, if those hobbies are considered unattractive by the general female population, which ones are attractive?

My bet is that it’s these:

Lifting Weights
Sports
Shooting/Archery/Fighting/Knife Stuff
Reading
Cooking
Outdoor Skills and Knowledge

That sounds like what you would be attracted to (other than cooking, i think that’s universal)

I would be curious to see what their definition of “general” female population is, because it seems to be the subset of the female population that uses X and would respond to a silly poll such as that. Which I don’t think is representative of the overall population. None of the females in my life use X.
Or - it’s dudes trolling the survey.

None. The very word hobby implies some degree of immaturity or gayness. Archery? What are you, Robin Hood? You know what will look attractive? Charity or volunteer work. Especially if it involves kids or animals.

Thank you for educating me on what women find attractive.

My experience in the dating pool was the opposite of this finding. Once again, it’s the identity issue. A dude that keeps fit is awesome: a gym bro is just a self-obsessed narcissist that is going to forego date nights so they can hit the gym, and if you DO go out to eat, they’re going to bring their own tupperware container with chicken, rice and broccoli in it.

Actual sports tend to go over well. Lifting weights is that thing you do to get BETTER at a REAL sport: it’s not a sport itself.

Definitely concur on the reading and cooking front.

Women are attracted to men who can defend them, who have physical coordination, literacy, and knowledge of the outdoors. Pretty sure I’m not alone in that.

Oh look. Shocker.

She listed a lot more than I did, and all of these are cool in my opinion.

I use X. What are you trying to say?

It was actually taken from somewhere else and shared on X (twitter) for discussion purposes.

Completely agree. That’s huge.

I thought the poll was on X (I am not). I stand corrected.
If it was taken on X, all I was saying is that as a survey of “population” level trends, they may have self selected into a non-representative subset compared to the one they intended. Not saying anything about any particular person that uses X.

I am curious how this list would change culture to culture. I think some would stay but others would go.
I agree that many of these hobbies are great and I have participated in a good number of them. I would find them attractive for women too.

Gym Bros tend to have the worst time management skills ever.

Yep, I read some type of poll on this a while back. It was interesting because the women were attracted to the men with the more muscular bodies (to a point), but when they were shown “bodybuilder bodies” they were turned off.

It was partially because giant steroid-soaked bodies aren’t attractive to most women, but also because the women assumed these bodies took hours of work every day and crazy diets, which meant the man was self-obsessed, would have no time for her, or he wouldn’t be fun to date.

As with most issues, the women were thinking a couple of levels deeper, beyond just physical attraction.

These types of polls also get interesting when the subject is dating vs. marriage. Priorities shift and you get some different answers.

It’s a fun topic.
