Never seen 650 move like that
WOW
Guys is there some kind of weird regulation or an inordinate amount of rules when competing in powerlifting comps? Why do some of you say you need to see him do it on the platform? Which I take to be the competition platform. Is anything really that much different? Does the person benching need to keep both eyes open during the whole lift, no blinking allowed, he must yell āunoā before initiating the lift and ākumiteā before finishing, and if his asshole clinches past a certian PSI he is disqualified? I do not get the talk about how it looks good but you need to see it in a powerlifting comp?
because it needs to be paused and locked out. Anyone can bench in the gym but to get it passed in a meet is entirely different.

I would not say there are an inordinate number of rules but doing something in a competition is quite different and more challenging than doing it in the gym. First there is the pause, the feet must remain motionless, the lockout must be even and clearly demonstrated, you have to start with your arms locked, etc. While Eās benches look - quite simply - amazing, on the vids in order for any lift to be official it must be performed on the platform. This is true of any sport - some dude might throw an amazing football or baseball in his backyard but in order for it to be official and recognized it has to be performed in a game. Kicking a 70 yd field goal on an empty field is nice, but no one will consider that to be the record, it must be done in a real game. James Henderson was reported to have benched 750 in the gym raw, but is credited with 711 because that is what he did in competition.
Donāt get me wrong, the guyās strength is incredible and if you look back a few pages youāll see I am urging him to do a meet. He trains around Mark Bell and others so I am also not suggesting that his bench will magically drop 100 lbs just because it is in a meet, although he seems to rarely do a true 1RM so we can only speculate what his actual bench max is. From a historical perspective, it would be extremely sad (for both powerlifting and for Eric) if he were to suffer a significant injury (which certainly can happen with the kind of weight he is handling) because in reality his best bench press is 0 lbs officially, 15 years from now no one will be talking about the guy who got strong in the gym but then never did anything in the record books, he will be forgotten. But if he performs - even if isnāt his best and he hits 650 letās say, it is still going to be one of the best benches in history.
BTW for some of the other posters saying this is way better than everyone else currently, some dude in Europe recently benched 693 raw in a competition with an honest pause (I think it is a thread on here) so it is likely he could match most of these lifts. Would be awesome to see these guys go head to head and it would be fun to see Henderson or Mendyās record fall.
That is my opinion on the subject, everyone is entitled to their own.

Oh no! I like Mendy. Great post about the merits of competing vs staying in the gym Tim, thanks! Definitely the meet is the only place to legitimately determine your maximum strength. I see some people take that attitude a bit too far though.
Lots of guys (some incredibly advanced and some who arenāt and are probably just pandering to the stronger dudes) say things like āanything you do in the gym doesnāt count for shitā and āif it wasnāt done at a meet then it didnāt happenā and stuff like that. I get where theyāre coming from, but letās be honest, it happened and it counts for something. If you do 650 for three reps in the gym, that fucking means something. If you hit a 850 deep squat with form that would pass in a meet, even though itās not a competition and you werenāt being watched by judges, that means something. You canāt put it in a record book, but it should count for something in your book.

It counts for something for sure. I would walk around with wood for much longer than the 4 hour healthy maximum if I repped 650x3 in the bench the way he did - but then the next thing I would do is sign up for a meet to make it āofficialā. That is me though, to each their own. I personally feel like if you love the sport of powerlifting (or anything strength based) and you can do well you are actually doing the sport a disservice if you donāt compete. For example if there is some record you know you can break, you should break it because that record shouldnāt be what it is. End ramble
Spoto is a benching freak! Just wondering what he can squat & deadlift!

I could give less then two Fucks what some nameless faceless person has to say on a forum⦠Besides the fact is since you admit you havenāt competed and donāt in PL. Pretty much made the 'preachy statement" you made in this thread seem very egotistical⦠or just Trolling.
Besides, Tim Henriques pretty much in his well written post covered the feelings of what allot of people are feeling.
Besides in a resent interviews Stan Efferdling and Mark Bell are pushing Spoto to compete. So I think you need too express your opinion to them also.
A question for you in return. Since you admit that you donāt competeā¦Do you really think thats what you said is going to carry any credibility or weight in a actual PL forum.
To restate my answer to your original questionā¦I honestly could give a Shit less.

I have no idea what opinion about powerlifting you are talkiing about. I asked a serious question about why lifting in a gym and doing what looked like clean bench reps is so different than in a powerlifting competition. Yes, Tim Henriques replied to me and answered my question. I do not understand what you are talking about where you think I have a bad opinion about powerlifting? I donāt see anything preachy about asking if there is a lot of rules and or regulations in a powerlifting meet. Did you confuse me with another poster or something?
