Im doing the 5/3/1 and absolutely loving it so far. I’m doing a trip to the US for 4 weeks in june. Is it easy to find casual gyms around america to train while i’m away? Going to L.A and New York so far.
I’m thinking i’ll just repeat the current cycle i’m on while im travelling because i wont be able to train like i normally do being away. Is this what you should do or should i have have a month off the 5/3/1 and do other kind of workouts and then just pick up from where i was when i get back?
Finding a gym to train in the US won’t be a problem, especially at the two cities you will be visiting. The issues you may run into are eating and sleeping as normal due to the time difference. Your idea to repeat the current cycle should work fine. You may also consider waiting 5 days or so before you lift so that you can adjust some, and lifting two times per week, still focusing on one main lift a session. Also, I would cut down on assistance work. I travel to California a few times a year (from Sweden) and this has worked fine for me; at the very least I maintained my strength levels.
Upon returning, I would again take 5 days or so and then continue your training.
Training is important, but don’t forget to enjoy your visit to the US.
No need to take any time off or change anything. Especially not repeating cycle. I’ve been on 531 for over 2 years now and travel up to 50% for work and never have had any problems.
Find a gym where you’re going and buy a week pass. Enjoy your vacation and do the minimum in the gym that you need to progress. You may not be hitting PRs but as long as you are getting your minimum reps and doing some assistance you are golden. 531 is very flexible which is why its so.awesome
NY and LA are HUGE areas so if you know specifically where you’re traveling to then that will help in the “where to train” decision. LA in particular is really spread out and getting to a gym that’s a few miles away might not be that convenient (and if it’s not convenient then you might not do it). There’s no shortage of gyms here though so that won’t be an issue for you.
I agree with MrX insofar as minimizing your gym time. You’re on vacation right? I would spend a LOT of time with rolling and other mobility work. Plane and car travel really punishes my body and keeping up with the “other” stuff is important.
Hope you find a good one. Golds Gym in St.Cloud, FL didn’t allow weights to hit the floor, the flat benches were bolted down, and the barbells were so rusted, I lost more energy trying to put the weight on, then lifting.
Oh, and they had no 2 1/2 or 35 pound weights.
Most gyms here in NYC are expensive, but if you’re not in NYC, then have fun.

Who needs 35 lb weights? Seriously? My PL gym doesn’t have any.
I’ve trained in NYC before, the day pass runs between $5-$20 depending on where you are at. Hardly expensive.
