What do you do when you are away from your regular gym for vacation, business trip etc?
Do you think of it as an excuse to give your body some rest or do you still do some form of exercise with whatever you can find?

We need an excuse to rest?
I plan my training around my schedule. If it’s a sudden change in schedule, typically the circumstances are such that whatever prompted the change is a greater priority than the training
This is the kind of thing I used to worry and fret over in my youth (finding a gym on vacation, training extra hard leading up to it so I super compensate while on break), but given that I have taken a week or even two off in the past to almost no noticeable visual affect and the strength is back within a few sessions I no longer devote much thinking to it and just enjoy my vacation.
I would say 9 times out of 10 if Im away from the gym for any length of time that would mess up the routine its because im on a trip or vacation or something significant, which for me usually involves LOTS of walking and moving around and such. While not strictly weight training, it is movement and activity
I dont see any harm in seeking out something if its available, but if its only going to be a week… I say just enjoy yourself and come back with renewed vigor to train at your regular gym
If it is a business trip that lasts more than a few days, I find a gym and train. More for my mental health than anything else. If it is a vacation, I take time off. I paid a bunch of money and probably traveled quite a ways, so the inside of a gym is not something I’m super interested in when I’m on vacation.
Generally, if I was away for only 2-3 days I might totally skip training or improvise a work out using resistance bands and whatever I could find in my room/hotel. If I was away for much longer that 2-3 three days, I’d likely find a gym to to smash a few times a week.
Usually my only travel is between OK and Canada. I usually don’t train on the day of the 17 hour drive but otherwise I train 5-6 days a week once I arrive. No time off. Relaxing was for if I wanted to have a bad body lol
This is my thread!
I travel about 90% for work, so if I’m not going to train on the road, I’m not going to train. I try to stay at Westin or even JW, when available (and reasonable), because they always have pretty well-stocked gyms. I also will scan the website pics real quick when booking a room to see what’s there - some places have had deals with local gyms and that’s cool.
Recently I got a Planet Fitness membership. Say what you will, but they’re everywhere, they all have smith machines, machines, cables, and DBs up to 75 (I bring bands with me), and most are open 24/7. This has been a fantastic add and lets me stay on program (more in a moment).
What I don’t do is all this goofy stuff I see online where folks will find some gym 2 hours away, pay $50 a day to go, and have to work their flight/ overnight schedule around that (I also don’t know how that could possibly fit - isn’t the whole point of work travel… the work?). I’m not staying away from my family even more than what’s required.
I used to just try to make do with whatever the hotel had, or it would be a calisthenics week, or whatever. When the travel got really frequent, though, that became annoying. I was basically never following a plan, which bled into just not caring, which made the whole thing not fun. That’s where I’ll again make a Planet Fitness plug - it’s like finding a fast food meal that can hit your macros for you; it just takes care of it.
Now, if I’m on vacation or visiting family or something that’s not an all the time, I just don’t worry about it. If there’s something near me and I want to lift, I’m doing it. If I feel like doing a prisoners workout to annoy my kids in the hotel room, I’ll do that. Otherwise, these just aren’t “routine” days, so I don’t worry about maintaining a routine.
That’s US. OUS is a little different, but they aren’t as frequent, the agenda typically includes some “personal time,” the local team is always cool about getting me a pass somewhere, and their hotels often have more stuff. I just deal with those as they come though.
You should check to see if you have availability for Active and Fit Direct either through your work health plan or AAA. AAA is probably better if you have it as you get 10% back at the end of the year. Through Active and Fit Direct you can get both Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness for $51 per month (first gym is $28 and second one is $23). Between the two of those, you’ll be covered in most parts of the US I would think. You can also get a bunch of other gyms too, including 24 Hour.
I didn’t really think about doing this - I’ll check it out. Thanks!
