I would only care about my shirt bench press if i was seriously competing…If you aren’t competing then why even do it???
b/c people like to have crutches
Man do I hate bench press. I am not terrible at it but it was the HARDEST lift for me to advance on. Seems like I was born to squat and dead, but God doesn’t want my bench up there with it. I believe if I could master my sticking point in the bench I could be a world class RAW lifter (I would use gear but feeding my children is more important).
I hit 315 in high school about 20 years ago, I’m 38 now. It took me another 15 years to break 405, but my training was really inconsistant throughout that time. For about the last 8 years I have trained consistantly and my bench has gotten up to 485 raw as of last year. My goals are not really power lifting oriented, so I could not tell you what my max squat is. I’ll do them for sets of 8 to 12 but I’ve never had the desire to max out my squat.
i got to 295 in high school,315 soon followed…have done as well as 430 for 2 raw…Been some time since i’ve been that strong but i’m 5 weeks in on the Madcow’s 5x5 and it seems to all be coming back.Had 3 bad injurys in the past 4 years and went through a divorce last year and didnt train at all…Looking to get to 500 clean and raw this year, only time will tell…jack
the 1st day i started benching did 70kg (160lbs i suppose) for 10 reps at a bodyweight of 59kg (competed at 57kg at the time) haha that was 6 years ago! progress was slloooowwww cos im in a weight restricting sport but i got there but the 140 kg (310 or so) is a killer on my left tricep for wotever reason and actually screwed it up once last year and couldnt bench for like 4 months at all. . oooops. . bit of a ramble lol
any ideas gettin that tricep back in the game properly its back to strength it was before but can feel a twinge now and again. . . and theres still a heap of scar tissue there tried all that friction therapy jazz an all no joy
this is my goal by football next year, Currently i am benching 260 @ 150.4lbs and 16 years old.
Definitly wana get this, currently im at 270 with a bodyweight of 175 and im 6’2" just got back into lifting and im hopen i can get up to 300 or so by the mid summer
Hit 330 at a BW of 206 during this previous bulk. Cutting now for my first BB show in July. Plan on getting 405 next year around January-February at a BW of about 210-215. Also HOPE/Plan on getting a 500-550 DL and at least 405x3 on the squat.
And to the poster above, no offense but you look a little small to be benching 270 @175 6’2", if that’s you in your avatar.
Managed 295 a couple days ago. And a triple 275.
20 more pounds till that third plate.
I’m benching and doing pull/chin ups twice a week hoping to hit that 315 mark in about a month.
routine goes something like
Bench -
Incline bench
Chin ups, pull ups
Lateral and rear delt raises.
It worked so far, sets and reps were either 5x5 or 4x8 depending on the day.
Next time I max- next month I should be at 275-280… 20 more lbs to go
305 Last night!

My Lifting Log.
Praise the Lord I can’t tell you how great it feels to put up 305!
My first ME bench 1 month ago was 225x4 with a max bench of 265, the following week i did 185 as many times as i could in 15 minutes (74 times), the following week i did ME bench and got 245x3, last week i did 255x3 and 260x2. I think my max may be close to 300 now.
i think this week i will do 225 as many times as i can in 15 minutes, then do ME bench the following week. Then i will shoot for a new max bench.
P.S. i was stuck at a max at 265 for the last 6 months, and i really think that the insane bench press days such as 185 as many times as you can in 15 minutes, really helped with my max.

i dont see how endurance type training would have much of a bearing on your ME days . . and with 2 at 260. . unless your a freak of nature im thinkin more like 270-275 for your max. . 35lbs is a bit drastic. . unless 2x260 was easy for you. . ? good stuff none the less but i dont think repping out on a submaximal load is gonna do much for your 1rm
Just put up 125kgx2 today. I’m going through 300lb by the end of the month, maybe even next week.
Just changed to an Upper/Lower split a couple of weeks ago and am seeing some good strength gains already. My log

Then again I should to be able to seeing as I’m 100kg, some of you smaller guys put me to shame.

If you think about, its 80% of a 275 max, and it wont be repping out by any means. It will probably be sets of 3 and 4, if you look at sheiko, and many other powerlifting programs, they use several small sets of around 80-85% max, so its kind of the same concept, it just gives you a time frame to complete them in, increasing the work/time ratio.
The near 300 pound max assumed by me, is based on the fact that my 3 rep max has increased by 30 pounds so why wouldnt my 1 rep max do something similar. Either way, i will let you know for sure in two weeks, if this thread is still going.

For a fun program that i’ve used and gained 35lbs on my max in 3 weeks from it, and 55lbs off it when I finished it up last friday, try the Blast Your Bench by Lee Hayward.
Its a tuff 3 weeks, but you get out what you put into it. I never paid for a program before but it was worth the 25$.
Gone from a 205 max in Nov 07 to 305 as of 4/14/08. Ran the program 2xs in these 6 months.
After 3 months of no benching I hit 275 at 170 today. Just missed 282.5 but I ll have it next weak easily. 300 in 3 weeks?
