300 Pound Raw Bench Thread

Speaking of this…I just saw some pretty small kid in the gym yesterday hit 305 on bench…i mean…he had to be 165lbs…

I maxed 4 weeks ago at 260 competition style with a pause at the bottom. Right now I’m training for my first powerlifting meet in August and I hope to hit 300 raw by the end of the year.

Here is my update -
I just got back from vacation and haven’t lifted in 8 days! Unbelievable how much I am dying to get back in there this afternoon.

Anyway, before I left I got up 285 which was my previous PR. I then tried 295, got it about 40% of the way up and just lost it. I actually felt more like I got out of the groove then lost my strenght but failure is failure.

So I will be back in the gym today and still haven’t completely decided my next program. I think I will probably just lift today and tomorrow, rest for the weekend and then start a program on Monday. Any suggestions on a good program for bench would be much appreciated.

I’m shooting for 300 also - well slightly over, 308 being the magical 3 plates since the 20kg plates here are 44lbs, not 45lbs.

I came soooo close back in 2005 managing 137.5kg one week but failing 140kg the week after - I think I psyched myself out of it, I remember being all nervous for an entire week and all I could think about was the lift! Oh well, that was when I was 95kg and had shoulder problems.

Today I’m 83kg, shoulders are fine and I just put up 120kg after following a 7wk program, a gain (or re-gain if you want to be picky) of 20kg after a long holiday.

20kg left to go!

i know the 3 plates either side is a killer. .
do it with a loada 15’s or 10’s. . remove the psychological aspect of ‘3x 20’s each side’ sounds silly but works because it doesnt ‘look like 140’ im lying in my 1rm mines 140 kg aswell @72kg bw i rounded up seeing as everyone deals in pounds on the site! :)[/quote]

Haha yeh, I’m pretty good at multiplying by 2.2 in my head these days, all the programs that I get off the web are in pounds

Has anyone ever tried the Shawn Phillips bench program? I did the 2nd one (the one that doesnt go above 6 reps) and it got me that 20kg gain I was talking about (or re-gain if you take into account my past training history). I really like the fact that it has those “failure tests” and negatives. I’m currently just finished by first “cruise” week after the program, 2 more to go and I plan to hit it again.

So last week for me was very busy so I made it a “screw around” week before starting a new program this week so I wasn’t that focused when I went in to the gym. But the day I went to do some chest all the flat and incline benches were taken and I was in a hurry so I decided to do some decline which I haven’t done in almost a year. I decided to do sets of 3 and after warming up did 3 reps at 225, 255 & 285 and felt pretty good. So I went ahead and loaded up 315 (a weight I have never done) and got the first rep up solid and almost got the second rep up. I know this is decline and not flat but I was till pretty pumped about 3 plates on a bench excercise of any kind!

Now I am starting a new program this week which will have me waiting 9 weeks to max out. Hopefully I will get that 315 on flat at that time.

Hit 295 last night for 5lb PR. I tried 300 and I was pretty damn close. Next time.

Good Job on the new PR - isn’t it amazing the difference 5 lbs can make? How long did you wait between the two lifts?

I was planing on going strait for 300. I pretty positive I would have had it if I had tried it first. My right elbow flared a little early and I couldn’t get it back under the bar. I am just getting over a cold and I wasn’t feel all that great to start, so rather than missing a lift and getting discouraged, I played it safe and went for a 5lb PR. Progress is progress! I typically wait 3-5 mins between max effort attempts. I’ll have it next time for sure.

Damn i am only at 260 pounds atm.

but offseason just started. so lets see in a couple of months.

I’m hoping to bench 300 by end of the year. I’m at 250 right now.

Bench 380 raw at 220 lbs…I can rep out 225 22 times

This thread is about getting a 300lb RAW bench, not about bragging how much over 300lb you can bench.

I didnt see you criticize other people for stating how much over 300 they are benching…I guess someone is trying to act tough and trying to receive support from other members who are benching under 300…If your looking for RAH RAH and cheering become a cheerleader…You waste of space

I wanna play too. Last year I hit 320 at 165 lbs.

I had a long time off and my max effort 2 weeks ago was 240 at 170 lbs. I want to get back up and over 300.

I wasn’t scheduled to bench yesterday , but felt like I had a 300lb bench in me, so…

225x1
245x1
275x1
300x1 5lb PR!! onto 3 plates.

Good luck everyone.

Is 300 so difficult to hit? I thought that 300-400 pounds bench was common and that i was just weak.

Can someone clarify this?

A 400lb bench is certainly not common unless we’re talking about guys 275-308lb and up. Amongst lighter guys it’s a huge achievement.

300lb is again a good achievement for the light (say <198-220lb) guys, in my opinion.

I dunno… haven’t tested in a while. Around 330 at 220 for sure anyway. Hopefully get close to 350 this summer.
