14, Started Lifting for Football

k well i guess ill give up the run and etc and just hit the weights hard core and eat like a monster and i run a 4.6 in the 40

If you work hard at putting on weight 20 to 30 pounds easy. You will put on some fat but that will all shed off once the football season starts.I would keep the running though to stay in shape. As an 8th grader i weighed about 165 with low body fat.During the summer I ate and ate and ate.

Two big breakfasts, multiple protein shakes a day (usually after one of two workouts a day)big dinners.I fixed myself between 4 to 6 servings of mashed potatoes nearly every day. They’re chock full of calories and carbs that will help put on meat.I came out the end of that summer weighing 195.During the football season I dropped all the fat and got down to a little over 180.Go for it.

Seriously take the time to visit www.defrancostraining.com, I think it will help you out alot. Also, in terms of nutrition, check out Cy Wilson’s article called Bulking For Skinny Bastards.

I have feeling this guy, with his age, natural makeup and activity level, would have to drink coke syrup and bacon grease shakes every day to gain much fat. Could be wrong, but I doubt it.

This thread kicks ass, seabass. The OP asked for advice. People gave advice. The OP…took the advice with relish. The typical “asking for advice thread” looks more like…

Muscleman@140: Hey guys, I’m new to T-Nation. I want muskuls.
Experiencedguy123: Well, you have to eat a lot and blah blah blah. Check out Waterbury and Poliquin’s articles, blah blah blah.
Muscleman@140: Fuck you, you aren’t the boss of me. I do what I want!

Thanks for listening. With your genes and the good attitude you’re showing, expect to go places.

I believe he can deadlift 410. That’s if he’s been training. I know one guy who pulled 400 when he was in gr.8. I also have a friend that pulled 501 at 15 years old. He was in the 220lb. class. It was a raw meet. Here’s a vid too. 501lbs deadlift - YouTube

Umm bad news for me i was weighed last night and umm sadly i lost 2 pounds and i have no idea how i have been taking weight gainer and eating like a mad man but yet i loose weight

Dont let it get you down…it could be a number of things, emptier stomach, water, or glycogen. Your weight can fluctuate a great deal during the course of a day.

It’s not all or nothing with running. Why not simply limit it to one or two short sessions of sprinting or HIIT?

Yeah man don’t stress on it too much.Take the setbacks in stride and keep moving toward your goals.

Well i was looking for a answer to this question but i couldnt find one so ill ask here i was wondering how long you should lift for cause well a friend from school and I went to the YMCA got there at 5am and didnt stop lifting till bout 8:32am i was wondering if that would affect me in any bad ways

This young dude has some serious promise…

OP, good work so far. Seriously. Get the vids up and we can critique your technique. Take the advice and you will dominate everyone on the football squad within maybe 3 years.

Seriously, CaliforniaLaw gives compliments to almost nobody. I second his advice “don’t fuck it up” by being obsessive about your abs, your bicep curl, or your freakin’ bench press. Train for performance 1st–looks will follow naturally if you keep a good nutrition plan.

Good call on eating everything in sight that’s not sweets and only drinking gatorade/water. I mean that. That’s what you gotta do to grow, and good food choices will keep you from getting too fat. Just accept some fat gain as a byproduct of getting stronger, bigger, and faster. Doing that while working hard will get you more progress faster than anyone else your age. And don’t let anyone tell you it’s all your genetics.

I think you’ve got a good genetic base, but crap man, there’s nothing more common in this world than wasted talent. Look at all the school dropouts and failed jocks. You gotta work hard day in and day out both in the kitchen and the weightroom/playing field to make your goals reality.

RE: the 2 lb weight loss. Don’t sweat it, it happens. I tend to weigh myself on a scale first thing monday morning–empty stomach, empty bowels. That ensures me a pretty consistent accuracy over several months. Also, make sure you’re eating a surplus everyday, not just going nuts on one day of the week and eating very little the following day. It’s all about consistency.

RE: How long you should lift. You should lift until you’re done. Period. I don’t mean trying to physically exhaust yourself and seek out pain on purpose. I mean, you lift until you accomplish what you set out to do that day. Don’t cut and run just because some clock says it’s been 1 hour, or 2 hours, or whatever. Sometimes I’ve been at the gym for 4 hours (not very often at all though  ). Sometimes I’ve been at the gym only 30 minutes.

The key is to go accomplish your plan, and set out on the warpath until you do. Then relax. Don’t socialize in the gym–work. Don’t talk on the phone in the gym–work. Don’t read magazines in the gym–work. Then relax.

Finally, running isn’t all or nothing. I say keep 1 in for roadwork, whether that’s light jogging or agility/sprints. It’s easier to maintain your conditioning than it is to let it go and have to start from scratch during preseason camp. You don’t have to be peak condition, just keep a little in to keep you used to running.

What programs have you read on here that you like? What are you doing now?

Well i like Westside for Skinny Bastards and i also have some books i got from GNC i use some of the workout routines from there

WS4SB is a good program! I’ve always remained skeptical about GNC’s books for the most part, though

Well other than this site its the next best thing that i have to fall back on

I hear ya. Check out www.elitefts.com and enjoy. The site’s got great info by world class athletes and a couple of extremely good articles on High school football programs.

The organization is a bit…lacking, but if you look long enough I think there are several HS football articles, at least one of which has a full program (10-12 weeks long). See what you think.

Also, grab Eric Cressey’s Ultimate Off-Season Manual if you have any spare cash, that book has some serious info you can learn and apply. My advice to you is to keep reading and try to critically think through the info. Try to synthesize this stuff together and start applying it to your own training. Probably keep with the written routines for now, but in the long run being able to design your own logical progressions will help.

Damn, I am 22 weigh 200lbs and your lifts are about the same as me.

Good stuff man and great attitude, I think westside for a skinny bastard would be perfect for you, incorporates running/agilty drills and you should get ALOT stronger following something like that.

my weight fluctates from about 196-203 depending on time of day, etc so dont sweat 2lbs

weigh yourself first thing in the morning to keep a consistant reading.

Also as mentioned before eat eat and EAT, track your calories on fitday, if you arnt gaining with 3,500 try 4,000 if you arnt gaining with 4,000 than bump it up some more. At 14 you look like you have a real high metabolism eat 6-8 times a day. It can be hard to get in lots of food but their is some ways to help

make your own weight gainer shake for breakfest, you can get in an easy 1,000 calories for breakfest (if needed) I use
1 cup uncooked oatmeal
2 cups whole milk
2 scoops protein powder
1 cup frozen blueberries
a dash of extra virgin olive oil to bump the calories up some more comes out to around 1,100 calories, easy to take in to.

eat plenty of nuts, pack a couple peanut butter and jellys for in between classes

DRINK LOTS OF MILK!

etc

good luck and most of all train hard

It would be nice if most of the teenagers logging in had even half of the drive and enthusiasm this kid seems to have. If he sticks with it, he will be running rings around any competition on the field and with the opposite sex by graduation.

The emo fad can only last so long before the pendulum swings back the other way.

Thanks KO for the pointers and ill be sure to take the weight gainer in the morning i used to take it before every meal and well to what Professor X said bout enthusiasm lets just say i wana make it big when i get older and i know that getting to the pros in NFL or making it Pro in PBB dont come free so im getting a head start

Lift based on how you feel.If your feeling good add weight, add reps, add sets.If your on a shit day get in there and work hard anyway but don’t break yourself.I have gone in some days and worked straight through 2 or more hours.Other days I hit the wall after a little more than an hour and I’m completely taxed.

The key is to bust ass no matter what. And to Professor X’s comment about the fad swinging away from being little emo punks I agree. There’s about 6 or 7 Freshman at my school same age as this kid with the same attitude. They don’t have as much potential but they are all scrounging up money to join a gym because the school will barely open the weight room this summer.

Most guys I know are the total opposite from the teens found on T-Nation.
