Worlds Strongest Man 2019 Discussion

Thanks

Thor has destroyed the stones and Licis did well on his run. That should make Martins WSM this year. Well deserved.

Actually looks like Martins beat Thor’s time

Martins winning the stones puts to bed any discussion about him squeaking through on points. Thor was injured I guess, but really it just seems that Martins had the right events. Given the performance, I wouldn’t put it past him to have beaten a healthy Thor at these events.

Agreed. Martins, with cherry picked events or not, was the best strongman on this day. I really believe that.

I’m just an old geezer fanboy who doesn’t (can’t lol) even do strongman; but I feel inordinately proud, and a smidge prescient, that I started a MARTINS!!! fanboy thread in this forum.

Mano a mano in the stones vs. everyone’s favorite strongman Mateusz, that is a fitting and appropriate way to cement the WSM Crown. Martins!

Yer well done Martins, worked extremely hard leading up to this comp and deserved the win.

I’m so happy at the podium picture. For once, smaller guys are back to the top, if only for however long it lasts (whether WSM promotes more well rounded shows, or shows that accommodate huge guys).

Mattis Bjorheim just posted a short video of Thor congratulating Martins after the stones.

Thor came through as a (surprisingly?) good guy in recent videos, and this proves it. Good for Thor.

Maybe the shite from previous WSM shows with Hall/Shaw was more Thor’s “team” than Thor himself.

I’m curious -did people complain about the WSM events when Pudz was winning his 5 titles? After all, Pudz’ best finish at the Arnold was only 4th. Al Gore hadn’t invented the internet yet, but I don’t recall people bitching and moaning as much about Pudz’ wins back in the day.

Normally, I would say a healthy Thor would’ve won, but the fact Martins beat him in the stones…

@strongmanvinny2 what do you think -did Thor’s injury affect his stones time at all?

People have always complained about the events and how they are suited to certain athletes, this has happened all the way back to when Geoff Capes won in 1983. You just weren’t able t read about it on the internet. The fact is that the type of events will have an impact on who wins, it always has and always will. Everyone has their favorites and will have an opinion especially if their favorite doesn’t win.

People definitely had something to say back then, but without the internet giving anyone and everyone a chance to say whatever it is they want at any time, there wasn’t much drama.

Now, in the strongman world, there was a fuck ton of drama. It was no secret that Mariusz received criticism for the fact he won multiple titles while half the top level strongmen were competing over at IFSA from like 2003-2007. However, I still think Mariusz would have fucking wrecked anyone in WSM given the weights and events partial to the competition at the time. I think what’s most impressive about Mariusz is that he nonchalantly took the titles home with virtually no technical prowess or premeditation. He just showed up like a cyborg from the future and did what he had to do. There was like no sense of hesitation or timidness. All while eating chocolate and maintaining a vocabulary consisting of solely iterations of the words “Es” and “Very ez, I show you”.

Anywho. I think Thor 100% healthy would be vying for 1st, but somehow, after seeing Martins perform, I think he might have still just won it all regardless. Who knows!

Hilarious!!!

Some contended that the real talent was in IFSA at that time.

Edit: @strongmanvinny2 gave a much better answer.

I def started following martins based on your thread so good job! And thanks for that. I also follow Shaw, Thor, and Larry Wheels. Plus a little jujimufu to mix things up.

He actually bitched quite a lot at times. I heard him talking Kaz’s ear off at a contest in Atlanta, crying about the events and how they didn’t suit him well enough. He would have won a lot fewer titles without the IFSA split. People underestimate exactly how go Savickas was during those years, he had a ridiculous career s far as number of years at top level.

I meant more the physical demeanor at which he did his lifting during the events, not so much his verbal and actual attitude. He seemed like a sore loser who was obsessed with winning.

Well, he did fail the stimulants test for one of them, and he was a drug dealer for the Polish mob. Those are some highlights.

Exactly. A malevolent, drug using robot mobster.
