I was looking on the webz to find an inexpensive/decent quality cage and ran into this:
I did not build this, but I might build one like it.
This cage is gonna go outside so I cant feel right about putting an EFS cage out there. Thoughts? Considerations to consider? Am I just being cheap?? [/quote]
Not sure how sturdy it is/would be, but that’s pretty flippin’ cool.
admbaum- I’m assuming by outside you mean under some sort of open air garage thing, right? I’d probably try and use 4x4s or 6x6s instead of wood gluing 2x6s together. Another option would be to get lengths of 3 inch pipe from a Home Depot or Lowes, get some t joint fittings and build it out of that.
Wood is very strong. So is pipe, actually. I do weighted chinups from a pipe with an outer diameter of one inch or so and it supports close to 300 pounds with ease. Two pipes (one on each side of the cage) will handle quite impressive poundages.
For outdoor use, pick some nicely poisonous wood that won’t go bad. (Couldn’t quite find the word for soaking wood in something so it won’t rot, impregnation doesn’t seem quite right.) It’s simpler (and more ecological) than rebuilding it every ten years.

pressure treated with some chromated copper arsenate. i think that’s what you mean, right?
Haha, that’s my cage. I built it a few years back and it has served it’s purpose perfectly. The whole thing cost me like $100 to make and it had no problem supporting 600+ lbs (me + loaded bar) on the hooks or 400+ on the catches. If you’re going to build one, make sure you do it well though.
Also, as already noted, I wouldn’t use a wood cage unless you were inside.

Nice work man.
After watching the video I was inspired to build one of my own. If you guys think woods no good for outside, I can accept that and just spend the extra 2 bills and drop an el-cheap-o out there like this:
I just have no space in this house to keep one indoors as much as I would love to.
