She has some awesome stuff, I will look that video up. Thanks for the suggestion!
I thought @Tanner_Shuck had one here on T nation that was similar but I can’t find it anywhere.
Look fun but too much impact on my knee!
Absolutely. Lowest bar like ever lol
No wraps or sleeves, just belt, however I definitely will start using in the next stages of my lifting. Probably not now, but definitely starting next year
I have! I reaaaaaaaalllllyyyy like it. Just have a case of this as well:
I’ll follow through a prescribed movement, but go months in between being consistent with it.
Here’s a few ideas to help with pull up progression:
Dead hangs (one arm or two)
Holds at the top position
Negatives
Jump pull ups (the jump gives you the assist to get your chin above the bar and then you can do some tempo manipulation with the negative)
Use Bands
Incorporate various grip positions (usually neutral or reverse grip is easier for beginners)
Assisted pull up machine
Scap Pull Up (I think this exercise is very important!)
Grip strength: Hangs(you can add weight), plate pinches, farmers walks, deadlifts, rope climbs, playing on the monkey bars, grip strength tools (grippers, fat grips, wrist rollers etc.)
Pull ups are an intimidating exercise but it’s 100% worth the effort! I have worked with a lot of people who are trying to master their first pull up and sometimes they feel frustrated, embarrassed and/or insecure about their ability. I always say… no one gives a crap what your face looks like when you’re trying, no one is laughing at you, no one is judging you and no one cares if you can’t do one pull up but they sure as hell admire the effort!
**Feel free to chime in and add to the lists.
I know there’s a lot of very knowledgeable people here!
@unicornsandrainbows I just made a post (see above this one ^^^) with some more ideas for pull up progressions so take a look and maybe you can give her some more tips as she progresses.
This sounds like a good plan. Hopefully she stays consistent and then you can come back and keep us posted on how she’s doing.
@mnben87 is right… body weight is important for this type of test so be mindful of that!
I will look that post up, thank you!
As for the bodyweight statement, I couldn’t agree more. I haven’t seen her in a few months so I do not know what her weight situation is. I am also very hesitant to bring up weight if she is going the direction that I last saw her.
A 17 year old girl is likely getting enough pressure to be thin. However, if the academy is truely her dream, the fitness requirements do not stop at the admissions test.
That’s true! It’s a lifelong dedication to fitness and if she starts making healthy lifestyle choices now it will make it easier in the future.
That’s awesome! I go bare knee until 300lbs and anything over that I put on my SBD sleeves. I tried wraps twice but they hurt and it made my legs bruise… damn, I sound like a wuss! I primarily train alone and always prefer the less is more approach when it comes to extra gear. It makes my life easier.
I went to the real academy (although it’s been a long time…). Let me know if I can be helpful!
I do and I’ll be sure to share with her. Thanks so much for thinking of me and tagging me.
Hi there,
I hope your niece can reach her pull-up goal. Here’s how I would have her prepare for it.
That’s the one! Thank you. I just couldn’t find it.
Hmm the real academy, the Naval Academy? Wait… No, West Point? I realize if I guessed wrong much grief is about to be received.
Thanks for the offer! I’ll keep you in mind when she gets going. It is good to have someone with direct experience.
Thanks for those! I will forward them into her, easy than me trying to use my words.
Seriously? You had to wait until the third try to get it?? I’ll let it slide, but tsk.
And no problem! It’s been a couple decades, but I’m happy to offer any advice I can if she needs any. The reality is you’ve just got to get through it yourself, though.
Oh no, I added extra insult by guessing Navy before Army.
I like how you put that, It is something she ultimately has to do herself. I can give pointers, but she has to find the mental strength to get the grades, test scores and the slew of other things just to get her application looked at.
Yep. She’ll self-discover whether or not she really wants in.
Start early - applications are based on a points system; when you hit the threshold, you’re in. As the class fills, that threshold goes up.
How do you guys manage hunger on lower body days?
I go in with good intentions, but then it almost feels like I’m grabbing things on autopilot, even if my stomach is full
I really just want to lose 3-4 lbs, which isn’t much big I don’t seem to have the discipline
