Women of T Nation

Not to be THAT person, but she doesn’t have to like it, to do it. As we get older, the odds get ever more stacked against us. Us ladies already have to contend with keeping our hormone levels in check, not to mention consistently training/exercising for YEARS.

If your wife is putting on weight at only 125-130lbs, if she changes absolutely nothing, she can expect to continue to put on more weight. It’s even more of an issue if she’s got less lean muscle she can hold onto.

No. She’s complaining about it, because it’s hard. Period. Try not to put the effect before the cause. Not trying to grill you, but has it occurred to you that child bearing/raising can actually cause those kinds of symptoms? Much like how you go and work day in and day out, your wife is grinding day in and day out. Cooking, cleaning, helping, teaching, supporting, and observing and contending the same minute details every single day, back to back.

And this is the part where I overstep my boundaries and let my intrusive therapy brain take over: How’s your marriage? Do you know how to approach someone struggling with depression? Do you know how to talk to your wife about it? Because sure, her periods aren’t regular, but sad is sad. They don’t have to be related.

I only ask because you saying she does this:

Is like a moth to a flame for me, when I see or hear people bring this up. Be it the husband or the wife. Top tier reason for that complaint: Feelings of not being appreciated.

Has anyone experienced weird changes in temperature tolerance throughout the day?

In the mornings, I feel super warm and have no problem going out in freezing temps in just base layers but in the afternoon, I feel cold and need a fluffy jacket indoors

Perhaps it’s caused by some kind of change in your lifestyle… medication, sleep pattern, work schedule, training, diet, sickness, hormones etc.

Could be a combination of things.

Is this something new or have you always been this way?

In the past I’d always just been cold in the winter.

The ability to tolerate cold in the mornings is new. I haven’t made any lifestyle changes

How about traveling? Air travel can cause all sorts of temporary changes to your body.

Being able to tolerate cold temperatures sounds like a blessing! I always need a jacket or 2 :joy::joy:

no. I got back to school two weeks ago

YES! :raising_hand_woman:

I get super cold in the afternoons. And then when I eat dinner my temperature rises again.

So there are a couple things that might cause it, but I’m not certain about any of them.

  1. Iron – My doc says low iron among women is a major culprit of feeling cold, but I’m not sure if we can blame that for the specific afternoon dip. I have noticed that I can regulate my body temperature better when I’m supplementing with it.

  2. Testosterone – I’ve also heard that hormones can affect our internal temp. Dr. Tyna Moore has said that she’ll have women increase their testosterone intake until they’re hot and horny. And then she’ll have them back off or maintain T-levels after that. So that makes me think it’s possible we get weirdly cold because of hormonal dips. But again… why the afternoons?

  3. Blood sugar – Another might just be just calories. Maybe we’re cold in the afternoon because our blood sugar has dipped. This seems unlikely, but it’s weird that my body temperature will rise again once I start eating dinner.

  4. Movement – If we’re sitting still right around the time we start to get cold, maybe it’s a lack of movement/circulation thing.

Let me know if you make any discoveries because I’d love to stop wearing layers of sweaters in a heated house! :joy:

I got my lumbar MRI results back. Going to post this here so other people can read as well…

I have a bulging disc at L4/L5 and a disc protrusion at L5/S1 which explains a lot!

Still waiting for the x-rays of my thoracic and cervical spine. @Dani_Shugart … after seeing your X-ray with the extra vertebrae it makes me extremely curious to find out more about myself! I just found out my brother has a T12 genetic abnormality, he’s missing part of the vertebrae.

Sounds like a Thyroid thing. Have you had yours checked?

^This is a good indicator of Insulin Sensitivity. Some keto folks end up with so much insulin sensitivity that they start sweating after eating any real amount of carbs.

Good point! Thank you for reminding me to take my iron…

Yeah, levels were low, which explains the being cold part, but not the being cold specifically in afternoons.

@Dani_Shugart iron is interesting. The other points don’t apply to me

I’m so glad you’re getting some answers!! Ugh sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with that though!

Ha! Yeah that was eye-opening. Your brother’s missing piece sounds fascinating too. Keep us posted!

Take it! Well… take it if you’re low. There are a lot of bad things that can happen if you have too much iron in your blood. But women don’t tend to have those risks like men do.

For some reason I can’t remember to take it either. And every time I get tested, it’s way below the healthy range. Here’s the weirdest part: when I don’t take iron for a while, my under-eye circles get DARK. I look malnourished and haunted. wait. maybe I am?!?! :see_no_evil: :ghost:

Haha same here! Whenever I get tested it’s always low but I’m not surprised because I always forget to take it :upside_down_face: (this has been happening for years so I really need to start remembering!)

I haven’t found a brand that I really like yet. I prefer the liquid iron but the taste is horrible!

Interesting! I have those right now… I’ll start taking my supps properly and see if they go away

There’s an amazing brand called IronSpan, but it’s a prescription only and it’s pricey as heck! And when I take it I look about 10 years younger. The doc gave me samples, but I may contact her for a prescription.

I’ve also used a lot of Heart and Soil products. I’m not sure if these bump up my ferritin levels as well as the ironspan though.

After 6 years of excruciating back pain I have finally figured out where the majority of pain stems from! An MRI showed a protrusion at L5/S1 and a bulge at L4/L5 so I thought that was the reason behind my pain until I saw a spinal surgeon who was certain that it was coming from my SI joints. He suggested we try bilateral SI joint injections to see if I experience any relief… the following morning I was able to put my socks on pain-free for the first time in years, it was AMAZING!!

I didn’t realize how much this pain was impacting my daily life as I couldn’t do simple daily tasks and sometimes I couldn’t get up without help. My training was limited and I was the most out of shape I’ve ever been in my life a few months ago!

I am back in the gym training hard, I play basketball twice a week and my nutrition is on point.

This picture is a comparison from 6 weeks ago to now. I feel great!! I need to get leaner but I’m not worried about it because I’m working on it and it will happen

Happy to hear you found a solution!

@Dani_Shugart I tried to get IronSpan here but couldn’t find it so I settled with a brand of liquid iron called Palafer and it’s really good. I’ve been taking it for a few months and all is good… tastes like crap but apparently it works!

I’m so glad you found something and are getting the good effects! (Sorry to hear about the flavor.)

One other thing we started doing is cooking in cast iron. I hear it can increase the iron content in food… but probably not by much. Every little bit counts though. haha
