500 hours to pay for a $6000 tuition

$12 an hour can be a great wage or a pretty poor wage depending on a fair few things.
Does it include medical?
I pay full health insurance for all of my employees. But it will end with obummercare.
Company owned vehicles I pay for all of it.
About 50/50
No mostly business
The hours are fixed, but I do hire part time drivers so they do whatever they like on their off time. And I will also pay a percentage of their school if they promise to stay on after they graduate. It’s only 5% but at least it’s something to encourge them to make more of themselves.
I try to create an environment where people want to stay by having good benefits, sick days, personal days, health insurance, small percent for school etc.
Middle America.
The work can range from physically hard to fairly easy depending on the day. I’ll say 50/50.
First of all why should I have to compete with a government hand out program that I help pay for. Sort of like competing with myself isn’t it? Secondly, if someone can make $75 more per week working for me why would they want unemployment? Yet…many, many take that easy way out. Once again I’m competing with the government. But what does that say about the entitlement mentality?
I have worked as a hiring manager for a retail company paying a fair bit less than $12 an hour and we always had a ton of applicants. They weren’t exactly reliable but then for low sums of money you can’t exactly expect it. You aren’t going to get a company man for $12 an hour!
You’ve asked some really good questions!
StevenF wrote:
$12 an hour is not a bad starting wage at all, especially with overtime.
Yeah, that’s what I think. But if Obama gets his way and taxes the job creators I am going to pay even less and not grow my business. In fact, I will go from 40 trucks on the road to probably 25 or 30, I’m not going to fight with an administration that does not want business to proser. There are already tax hikes built in to many things to pay for obamacare. Sure it might be even more difficult to find someone good for say $11 per hour but I am not going to pay the tax hike alone I’m going to pass it on in lowered wages, bonuses and higher prices to my customers.
Then everyone will be happy.
Oh wait…no they won’t. But that’s what happens when we have a clueless turd like Obama as our President.

It’s a starter job Pitt. Do you understand what that means?
If someone graduates from High School and wants to get a job and has a clean license and no arrests and can pass a drug test (that lets you out) they can work for me for $12 per hour.
It’s an opportunity to have a first job.
Where does it say that everyone is entitled to make 100-k per year at the age of 18-22?

There is no need to spend a penny for a CDL these are not large trucks. And a starting pay for a young person of $12.00 per hour for an unskilled job is not an unfair wage. With overtime (and there is a lot of that) a driver can make 30-k to 35-k per year. Not a lot of money but then again for someone’s first job not bad. It seems though that many young people want to start out at the top, not all but many. And if they can make close to this wage on unemployment they usually either don’t come in, or we never hear from them after the interview.
Now tell me Pitt what’s wrong with an 18-22 year old starting out making the kind of money that I pay for that one position? If they want to improve they have that opportunity through training or more school, or switching jobs which is a possibility once they have shown a good work ethic and done well in the position that they’re in.

I know when these people work at starter jobs the get to buy starter diapers and starter food . I know every retailer makes special compensation to all these people working starter jobs but this is fantasy . Reality is your job could pay less but if you are employing people with commercial drivers license , you better hope the union does not talk to your employees .
I can not make the decision if you can live in your Geographic local with that type of compensation . So I will not bust your balls any more .
Your comment about a 100 k is typical Zeb , exaggerate to the point of absurdity and pretend you win.

Pitt, I’m not trying to win anything. I just want to explain to you what I feel is a fair deal. let logic guide you just once.
1- Unskilled labor.
2- 18-22 year olds
3- First jobs
Most of these guys are living with their parents for crying out loud. The only money they need is for personal items and beer on the weekend. The ones who have been around a while have wives who work and make an additional 25-k. So between them they take in 50-k to 60-k a year. Not a lot of money but we are talking about unskilled labor.
The sharp ones do a great job and move up into the office after 3-5 years and make more money. Or, they get more training which I help pay for and they get a raise into the $15-$20 range.
I don’t know what country you are from but here in America that’s called giving your employees a fair shake!

Fortunately only about 17% of US workers are in a union.
As for union bosses many are no more than organized thugs. They stop short of sticking a gun in your ribs. But they certainly tell you what to do. I used to be in a union years ago and I hated it!
