The Georgetown, Kentucky Toyota plant gets by just fine without unions. The workers have worked diligently to keep the UAW out.
In my opinion if you work for a company that is fair , you have no need of a Union

On this, we certainly agree. I’ll buy the beer tonight.

Yeah jobs are so abundant , why not go on welfare

If I started a company and want to pay you zilch for your time you can walk. If jobs are not abundant then you can stay and work for zilch.
With extended unemployment and the ABC list of government handout programs there are many who would rather take a free check (in some form) than work for $10 or $12 per hour on a loading dock or starting driver. This I know as I see it every day. I’ve owned my own company for almost 25 years and I have never seen such an entitlement mentality as at this very moment!
I could blame plenty of things and people but I won’t go there right now.

some one can spend $6000 dollars to get a class a CDL, mighty generous of you
There is no need to spend a penny for a CDL these are not large trucks. And a starting pay for a young person of $12.00 per hour for an unskilled job is not an unfair wage. With overtime (and there is a lot of that) a driver can make 30-k to 35-k per year. Not a lot of money but then again for someone’s first job not bad. It seems though that many young people want to start out at the top, not all but many. And if they can make close to this wage on unemployment they usually either don’t come in, or we never hear from them after the interview.
Now tell me Pitt what’s wrong with an 18-22 year old starting out making the kind of money that I pay for that one position? If they want to improve they have that opportunity through training or more school, or switching jobs which is a possibility once they have shown a good work ethic and done well in the position that they’re in.

Did the absence of a comma throw you ?
Not to derail, but since it has relevance, got some news about San Bernadino…
The City stopped paying the teacher pensions due to upcoming bankruptcy, they need their remaining money to fund current city services. The California State Retirement System (CALSTRS) sued and it went to bankruptcy court. The court sided with the city, citing Federal Bankruptcy Law, CALSTRS plans to appeal, but will probably lose that as well.
Cities can now "opt out " of expensive Union contracts by bankrupting out, and it seems to work.
Another interesting fact, CALSTRS invested in the same gun company responsible for the Newtown massacre, why do Unions hate children ?
You have some of your facts wrong HH. Detroit began losing it’s white population after the riot and by the fifties it’s total population was declining.
The first black Mayor Coleman Young did engage in a serious amount of race bating. This kept the city from working with the other communities in the metropolitan area for mutual benefit. When Young was mayor, Oakland county (which borders the north side of Detroit along eight mile road) was the third wealthiest county in America. The only two counties that were wealthier were New York and Los Angeles counties. Then in the Nineties Oakland county overtook Los Angeles as the second wealthiest county in the US.
Dennis Archer wasn’t a bad mayor. But he did inherit a good deal of systemic corruption, that he wasn’t able to resolve and the city council is a bit of a mess as well.

$12 an hour can be a great wage or a pretty poor wage depending on a fair few things.
Does it include medical? Do drivers pay for any fuel or vehicle costs? Is it mainly highway or urban driving? Are there deliveries to unsavory areas? Is it a flexible enough job to work around external study (exams and such). Are you happy to hire people you know will quit in 1-2 years or are you looking for more permanent workers? Is the business in a cheap city or an expensive one ($12 an hour is a hopeless wage in nyc)? Is there any job security for a good worker? Is it physically hard work? What is the unemployment rate of the area?
If you cannot compete with welfare then you are not paying well. What does an 18 year old without children even get from welfare? $600 a week? I don’t think so! Maybe $100 if they are lucky.
I have worked as a hiring manager for a retail company paying a fair bit less than $12 an hour and we always had a ton of applicants. They weren’t exactly reliable but then for low sums of money you can’t exactly expect it. You aren’t going to get a company man for $12 an hour!
