Why are Sprinters Muscular?

Hi everyone,

I was watching athletics on the TV the other night and was wondering why do the sprinters look so muscular is it that they do a lot of weight lifting as part of their training or is it that all the sprinting they do creates a better hormonal enviroment in the body for muscle building

Running really hard for a short time is like weigh lifting in that it’s anaerobic.

That combined with all the PEDs they’re on and then you get a physique like that.

they also lift weights 3-4x a week and are pretty fucking strong. not to mention that doing sprints multiple times a week is probably the fastest way to get to single digit body fat.

-genetics
-training
-diet
-drugs

below is harry aikines-aryeety who is a british sprinter and very strong / muscular - probably weighs around 200lb I would guess. He has actually slimmed down a bit, was alot more muscular around 18 months ago.

I always attributed it to rampant boron abuse…

There’s your answer: explosive anaerobic training helps maintain fast-twitch dominance and lowish bodyfat, and a muscular physique is typical result.

Cmon now Nards, did that really have to be in the very first reply??

Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was able to box squat 600lbs in his prime

2:40 mark

Unfortunately we have no video, that is a video of 495, taken many years after his prime.

This is a really poor question honestly it’s genetics and training. SOme cases drugs, not so much on diet, most of the sprint groups I have been around none of them paid special attnetion to anything.

It is partialy genetics. If you want to sprint and aernt concerned with winning then genetics has no part. Chillin hit it. Its training anaerobically and explosively. Sprinters do lift. the more force you apply to the ground the faster you will go if you can keep your mechanics in check. Get a vo2 max, see where your anaerobic and get out there.

Yes and no, but not sure why you felt the need to use my post as quote. I think you may have misinterpreted what i said.

My last statement was directed towards nutrition, as many of the sprinters I know of give minor attention to their diet, unfortunately.

The op’s question seemed to be directed towards higher level sprinters.

One point that should be mentioned, is that for the most part the average weight of high level sprinters is around 175 pounds. They appear more musclular than they are.

Hell yea it does.

It might be just a little easier to get that look when you’re pumping yourself full of steroids in order to win the gold.

Sprinters are some of the best athletes in the world, hands down.

CS

because they work out

Few (if any) top level sprinters are what I’d consider muscular.

You don’t have to be hyooge in order to qualify the term muscular

Top level sprinters look more like A&E models.

Even then, there are still plenty of jacked sprinters.

Out of the 8 pics you posted FIVE are of the same person (Harry Aikines-Aryeety) and I think the last guy is a football player.
