Why All the Hate on Crossfit?

Hey guys, i can see that people here don’t really like/have something against crossfit, but why? I don’t see what’s wrong with wanting to have great strength and conditioning and overall fitness. Or is there other problems with crossfit that i don’t know of? Please enlighten me, thanks.

I think it has more to do with the fact that this site is a body building site and not a fitness site. its not that it is bad or wrong its just not what a lot of people here are after.

^99% coupled with the fact that everyone wants to believe that their definition of fitness is the best, but spend too much time griping about what everyone else does.

  1. Certain coaches bash it because it is popular and not what they are selling.

  2. Sour Grapes

Oh, well, if it’s really the reasons above then it’s kinda stupid. We should respect the goals of others, its not like there something wrong going after overall fitness. Some people want to be big and strong, some want to be strong and well-conditioned, so why the hate?

Because Crossfit, and Crossfitters, are very loud about their way being the best way…moreso than any other segment of the fitness world. They make it into something it is not. They believe anything that is even close to circuit training can be called “cross fit”. CrossFit didn’t invent circuit training…they just trademarked a brand of it…

Whatever. As long as it gets people through the door…then it’s up to either their trainer/coach or their own free will to find out everything about the world of physique transformation.

first let me say that if crossfit is getting more people to work out, then great. i’m not going to bash them for getting people in shape.

i have two issues with it though, one is that this isn’t something new. i believe it was stated before, but this is just taking a type of training and trademarking it. go into any great strength coaches facility and you will see some of these types of workouts being done. they just don’t put a name on it. my second issue is the fact that there really is no periodization scheme for these workouts. its based on throwing together obscene amount of reps on a daily basis.

oh wait i got a couple more, i don’t see how its safe to let anyone become a certified crossfit trainer with no previous background in training. and i know its not all places, but some of the videos i see, the form makes me cringe.

but hey its getting people in shape right?

I like crossfit, but it annoys me to no end when people try to claim it is something it isn’t.

Case in point, there was recently a thread on the crossfit board (yes I regularly read it) where someone was trying to sell the idea of crossfit to his friend who was a college baseball player. IMO this is terrible. Sport training should be specific to the sport. Crossfit is by definition generalised. What does Fran have to do with baseball? I’ve never seen a baseball play that required 3-5 minutes of constant exertion. Far to often you hear people say: just do crossfit. Want to train for a marathon? Just do crossfit. Want to play football? Just do crossfit (or just as bad, crossfit football - which still isn’t specific to football).

I’ve recommended crossfit to my family members who are just looking to stay in shape. I think it is great for this. I would never recommend it to my wife who is a competitive powerlifter.

We don’t hate crossfit for any REAL specific reason.

We simply hate everyone and everything that is even slightly different than ourselves, because they are wrong.

We hate other people, and anything that they think or believe that doesn’t fall in line with our beliefs.

Trick is, we are large enough that no one can do anything about it, we are giant assholes backed up by physical over development and legions of like minded, similarly oversized fuckers.

Welcome to the Iron Game. We are an army of bigots and hypocrites and no one can do anything about it.

/Thread.

Crossfit is my thing, but thing about Crossfit is that it is general conditioning across broad time and modal domains. Most sports (with the exception of combat sports, maybe a few others) have specific conditioning across specific time and specific modal domains. While it is great to have the kind of conditioning that crossfit develops, you definitely don’t need that level of general fitness to play baseball or football or most any sport. It certainly wouldn’t hurt, but there is only so much time and energy that you have to put toward gpp/spp/ and skills training. It can be used and be a good thing, whether it is optimal in the grand scheme of things, I don’t know.

If everyone who did crossfit had this attitude, I think there would be far less “hate”.

CrossFitters have great strength? Not just mediocre or adequate levels of strength?

In fairness, you are in the “Conditioning” section of this forum.

Depends on who you’re talking about. The high level ones are stronger than most people you will find on Tnation. Josh Everett is stronger than most, for example.

That was hilarious!!! There is nothing wrong with crossfit, just don’t try to force your beliefs on us who love to pound heavy weight and live to squat 1000Lbs.

I’ll be the first to admit that I could not finish one of those lady workouts and would probably puke if I did, but that is not my training goal and I would never tell anyone else if they want to be strong you have to do Westside Barbell Training!

again with josh everett. he didnt always train in crossfit right?

Because crossfit is shit!

Too much bragging for not enough result.

Poor form, no scientific base, no periodization, just a bunch of idiots pushing hard lead by a fat guy thinking that because they are sweating and almost puking they are the cream of the crop.

I am just against doing olympic lifts to exhaustion. Just seems dangerous to me and I have adequate form. From the people I see in the gym, without technique overhauls high rep olympics lifts seem dangerous. but again i’ve never done it just looked over a few workouts
