Whiskey!

bringing this over from the mixed drinks thread.

FWIW I’m going to try a bourbon from Costo. Kirkland premium small batch. it’s a 7yr and I think rye. as I understand it’s either Clear Springs Distilling which is owned by Buffalo Trace or Kentucky Springs which is Knob Creek. so it could be either Beam, Buffalo Trace, Baker’s, Booker, Hayden’s, or Knob Creek. might be decent or might suck but small batch means change batch to batch. at @$20/liter worth a shot.
has anyone tried this stuff?
while I’m there buying some bargain(cheap?) bourbon going to look for some Angel’s Envy and maybe some WhistlePig since it gets such high marks.

As an aside, I just about crapped when I saw Costco had a $700 bottle of scotch under the Kirkland label.

The Costco one is the only one I buy because I think it’s fine.

Some people will say then can tell it’s cheaper or whatever…fine…so you can tell…but is it like ashes in your mouth? Like you said it’s 20 bucks a liter!

Totally amazed at the current price of a 750ml bottle of aged single malt whisky. As the value of the dollar decreases on the world’s financial markets, the cost in the USA for a bottle of Scotland’s “Water of Life” skyrockets.

Everyone has traditions, and mine is excellent whisky sipped with family and friends. Decades ago we were enjoying bottles of The Macallan 25-year old for around $200 per (and believe me, at one bottle sipped over a year or so, many a whisky lover spoiled themselves at this price). When the distillery was sold to the Japanese the price per bottle went up by say approximately 50% to about $325, with the justification attributable to cover the cost of the purchase price - which is plausible. Personally, the last bottle of The Macallan 25-year old I purchased was at the $400 level approximately five or so years ago.

Yesterday, I went to purchase a 750ml bottle as a Father’s Day present and the price at every package store visited was $1,000 or more per bottle. And that, my friends, IMHO is ridiculous.

Never ever thought politics would have such an adverse impact on a favorite liquid. And as a whisky lover, I can wait on future purchases until the value of the dollar returns as the world’s currency leader. Time will tell.

Gee, I should have been more serious about the idea of investing in Whiskey.

Screw Scotch though. I bet a 25 dollar bottle of Buffalo Trace is every bit as good as that 25yo Macallen.

Don’t know if you have pulled the trigger on the Booker’s yet, but I’ve been drinking for a few years and I highly recommend it.

I kinda got sidetracked by scotch. Laphroaig and JWB kinda took over. I’ve got into cigars lately though and there are different bourbons that I wanna try with certain cigars one being bookers. Actually drinking some JWB right now and pondering what cigar wod go nice with it. I have mostly Dominicans. So most of them are mild to medium strength.

I ended up with JWB and a Macanudo cafe Hyde park. Although I don’t like hijacking this whisky thread with cigar talk. I wish Push or Lanky would make a cigar thread. I’m not experienced enough to do it. The other cigar threads on here were all people talking about the health hazards instead of the ones they enjoy.

I saw this and it was only about $15US but didn’t buy it…yet.

It intrigues me as when I was a kid and would see John Wayne or Captain Kirk drink scotch I’d imagine it would tase something like caramel…what with the name “Scotch” sounding like butterscotch and the color of it. Even ‘whiskey’ conjures up a creamy sounding drink.

I still remember my first taste of whiskey when I was 17 and thinking “Yikes! That was rough! How could someone ever get addicted to this shit?!”

I dropped a bit of knowledge on cigar storing in this thread:

Feel free to resurrect if you have any specific questions.

That ones labeled Cuban cigars. I was thinking of something like our beloved whiskey thread where we can talk about any kind we want. Also a kind of cigar 101 for beginners. Everybody from beginners to occasional cigar smokers to cigar officinados would be welcome. Just sayin

This might have already been mentioned but has anyone tried Jim Beam Black Double Aged? might be my new favorite under $20.

I hope it’s not a sweet tasting whiskey. Keep us posted when you try it, I’m interested on how it compares.

Had a bad experience with Beam in the past. So I stay away. Buddy at work loves this stuff though. Personally, at $20 I’m buying Buffalo Trace which I love.
