It’s the ultimate Scotch on ice.

Whisky lovers are celebrating the recovery of five crates of Scotch and brandy belonging to Sir Ernest Shackleton, buried for more than 100 years in the ice… in Antarctica…

The haul was left behind, along with other equipment… in 1909 during a failed attempt to be the first expedition to reach the South Pole.

Great find!..That’s pretty cool about the lost recipe. I’ll have to e-mail it to my old man. He’s crazy about this stuff. I go to his house and grab the bottle of his best stuff and put it in a coffee mug and chug it down in one shot lol. It drives him up the wall. I don’t even like the stuff, I just do it to bug him. He makes a big production out of it. He says why don’t you stick to that vile Jack Daniels your so fond of, you just wasted 2oz of the finest blah, blah, blah…

And your dad has never smacked you upside the head?

You horrible, horrible man. One would think with a name like “bond james bond” you might appreciate a proper dram of Scotland’s finest export. If I were your father I’d punch you in the hamstring. Yeah, I know it’s an awkward place to punch somebody, but still…

Walk into your local LCBO and take a look at the prices of the Scotch your father likes. They keep it under lock and key. McCallan, Laphroig, Bowmore, Ardberg…once it passes 15 years you’re looking at 100-200 dollars.

You’re a reprehensible son of the lowest order. Had you been born in medieval times they’d put you in the stocks and toss fire-blighted potatoes at you, under a sign that read “Dimm-wytted sonne”. Just saying…

Most yanks wouldn’t know a good whiskey if it slapped them across the coupon.

Pimpbot mate I am sure you could source a 15 year old laphroig in Scotland for about 20-30 pounds(50 - 60 dollars).

When you think about the amount of gear those guys would have to pack back in the day just to survive in the cold, it’s funny that they were able to pack 5 crates of booze with their provisions.
Priorities I guess LOL!

I’m sure you could. Canada is insane with alcohol taxation.

I have Scottish friends in Japan who have told me a good Single Malt in Tokyo is cheaper than in Scotland. There are very low taxes here on any kind of foreign alcohol.

I love single malt. Jack I spent my whole stay in Scotland drinking single malt in edinburgh and inverness. It was awsome. And you know, people say scottish food is bad, well, I had some fantastic cuisine there. I may be partial because I am scottish, but I fucking loved that country.

I read Shackleton’s book awhile back. Ernest was discussing a method they had for keeping warm when their supplies were running low…they would simply throw penguins on the fire! “Hey, the fire is dwindling a bit, throw another pengie on there to stoke it up! Oh, and bring another bottle of scotch while you’re at it.”

as proud as you are of Scotch, old boy, I must defend American’s taste in Whiskey. the defense is to point out Bourbon. oh yes, i’m sure a good Scotch is a nice thing to find, and i’ve spent plenty of money and sipping hours on Scotland’s finest Barrel Aged booze of choice, but good Bourbon is a fine American treat, quite unique to our country and well worth the attention. just like any of the world’s finest Whiskey’s, when aged correctly, not made cheaply, and paid close attention to by its Distillers and handlers, as well as its purchasers, Bourbon can be a beautiful thing to behold. perhaps its seldom as Smooth as Scotch or Irish Whiskeys, and for some the sugar is a bit much, but when you get passed the big name brands like Jim Beam (a good tasting Bourbon, but still falls victim to the pitfalls of mass appeal) and the cheap shit like…hell, i dunno, ANY Bourbon under $13, you can find some real tasty treats, with heaps of flavor and real spirit, no pun intended. all run on sentances aside, us Yanks do know good Bourbon as much as its popular to believe we’re all a bunch of Jack Daniel’s swilling rednecks who only drink Budweiser and watch NASCAR. many of us, when we can afford it, do take our drinking quite seriously.

I love bourbon for its kick, may fvorite is Bookers, but everyone who likes whiskey should try Laphroaig. I have the quarter-cask.

It tastes like a burning peat bog with ammonia spilled in it…but in a very good way.

no guys lets not turn this thread into a debate.

we should all rejoice by having a nice single malt, or johnnie blue.

peace

Back then, scotch was gear to survive the cold. All the explorers brought the stuff in crates.

The bad news is that I remember reading another article about Antarctic scotch, and I think they mentioned that there is an international law that prevents any sort of salvage in Antarctica. The scotch has to stay…

lol, i like how much shit ‘bond james bond’ got.

You upper crust Scotch drinking fussbudgets sure know how to party lol. I mean look at this picture. Leatards?..bravo my good man, off to the forest to chase the fox and a little daring-do eh old son. Excellent idea Sir Manypenny, excellent idea I must say.

All kidding aside, I just don’t have the taste for it. Is there such a thing as a dark scotch?
