The Whiskey/Bourbon/Scotch Thread

So, I couldn’t fall asleep and decided to pour myself a drink. This turned out to be a mistake, because the drink happened to be Scotch and one drink turned into the rest of the bottle. The 1 hr difference between my computer time and cell phone time doesn’t help the situation as its about 4 am and I have stuff to do tomorrow and I’m by myself, but I’m going to make the best of it while I finish this bottle.

#1: If you have a drink by yourself, how much does it turn into.
Only whiskey/bourbon/scotch applies, plus if you have a few beers its ok.

#2: Booze Reviews
TC recommended Bulleit bourbon awhile ago. I bought a bottle and drank it but only thing I remember is the distinct taste of rye. I wasn’t thinking at the time, nor do I have any technical experience in reviewing these substances.

Now, I’m drinking Laphroaig, which to me tastes like smoked Patron. All I taste is peat and it goes down like water. Its light amber in color. Thats about the best I can do. It was cheaper, ~$40/bottle, which surprised me as I thought it would be more when I bought it.

Next, I’m doing the Bushmills/Jameson/Jack Daniels taste test. I can taste Bushmills distinctly, because I learned to drink whiskey from a protestant and that is what they drank. I feel like a traitor because I’m catholic and they drink Jameson. I plan on remedying this, but being an American I know what Jack Daniels tastes like and I don’t liek it. Jack Daniels may be a Bourbon but as of now I think it is technically a whiskey.

I’m not religious, but its a matter of personal pride, and religion has no place in this thread unless you’re drunk and around friends.

Please, share your expertise in how to taste, judge, and express in sampling these drinks.

Stories:
Third, share any embarrasing or manmaker stories involving whiskey/bourbon/scotch. If it is combination with beer it counts, but if you mix any other booze i.e. a night out of drinking whatever doesn’t count. Only nights involving scotch/bourbon/whiskey and some beers counts. I know theres gotta be a bunch of these.

I just finished the bottle, there wasn’t that much left. It was only an 1/8 or a 1/4 or whatever they are referred to. Please feel free to comment on or refer to any drinking loor or sources and any other interesting notes you may feel apply.

To end, if you’ve tested both eyes, and figured out which one renders reality the best, please remember you’re in heaven, and you can do whatever you’re conscience can tolerate.

Answer:

Friday nights I like to have what I guess ends up being 10oz of bourbon or whiskey.

I like bourbon’s kick. I just got a bottle of Wild Turkey (my first time with it) and like its strength.

The whiskey I like most is Laphroaig. It’s like no other in that it tastes like a burning peat bog, but in a good way.

When it comes to lots of the others ( be they single malt or blend) I can be easily fooled by a cheap one as my palate is not that discerning.
Sometimes I just tell myself that the next time Costco gets a pallet of Jack Daniels I’ll just buy 10 bottles of that and stop trying anything different and more expensive, since it’s just fine with me and costs about $18.00US.

My favorite whiskey so far is Blantons, although my normal sipping whiskey is JD.

One night, when I was around 19, I bought a bottle of really cheap whiskey, Elijah Craig. After drinking half the bottle and who knows how many beers, I started crying telling everyone how good Elijah Wood (the actor) tastes. Then I went around asking everyone to punch me in the stomach.

Good times.

#1 has to be jameson. Wild Turkey is nice. Seagrams for the budget. Super budget windsor canadian or canadian club.

For the budget or to share among a large group of people, I always go for the 1.75 litre bottles of canadian mist. I used to drink that when I was under age as I could get a bunch of bottles and keep myself stocked up for a long time.

Last Summer, stopping in at a friend’s on the way to upper Ontario, we opened a bottle of it to have a couple drinks. It turned into a mission to finish the whole thing which we ended up accomplishing. It was two of us, then handing out shots freely to whoever wanted them. Somebody would come for a shot, and we’d pour them two and try to get them stay for more. Trying to get a whole party drunk of that stuff was a pretty common occurence in my youth. It was a good filter for girls too, as if they couldn’t handle at least 2 shots of it, they were probably a bigger pain in the ass than they were worth.

Good times.

Lanky, in case you haven’t tried it, Rare Breed is fabulous and is just a little over 100 proof cutoff. Damn tasty.

I haven’t tried it but I’ll definitely pick up a bottle. I have a nice collection going and a few bottles I’m looking to pick up so I’ll add this to the list.

Liquid blackout

I’ve been drinking a lot of Evan Williams Honey Reserve lately. It isn’t one you want to really get drunk on because it’ll give you an awful hangover, but just a glass of an evening is nice. Wonderful taste, very soothing for your throat too (I started drinking it this winter when I was having some throat problems.)

Kicken Chicken makes some good stuff. I was introduced to their Rye this winter, very tasty.

Wild Turkey used to make a single barrel brand called Kentucky Spirit, very smooth, strong smokey flavor.

Weller, Makers Mark, and Knob Creek are good brands, not too pricey.

One of my traditions in college was to go to the bar that had 1/2 price pints on Sunday and drink Guiness chased with a shot of Jamesons. My best was 8 rounds.

Knob Creek is good, Maker’s Mark is probably my least favorite name brand whiskey of all time. Just gross.

Add a little bailey’s irish creme to the top of that shot of jameson and you’ve basically got yourself an irish car bomb. So good.

knob creek and walker are my favorites.

Don’t be fucking up my Jamesons with Bailey’s, thank you.

Johnnie Walker Black used to be my favorite go-to, don’t feel guilty about drinkin it because it was reasaonably priced but still was a nice drink with a good nose and complex overtones.

Haven’t had that in a while. Imma get some today.

Johnnie Red is vile.
