Had some Wilson over the weekend. Only whiskey I’ve ever been able to comfortably drink straight. I’m still breaking myself in.
Any recommendations for someone who doesn’t like Jack or Jameson, but is fond of Johnnie Black?

If you were any kind of a decent man at all you’d have your wife purchase and send bottles to all your Whiskey thread buddies here on T-Nation.
We’ll wait around and see if it happens.
I don’t do well with disappointment, just so you know.
I’ll get right on that!! lol BTW since there are no good liquor stores around here, does anybody know a good online site with decent prices?

Just picked my friend Johnnie up. It’s pretty good. Nice and smooth.

JW black is def on my list to try. I love The Sopranos and Tony and the bunch had JW black al the time.
I can tell you when I started this I didn’t like Jameson and JD was kinda MEH! Woodford Reserve was the 1st one I liked. Along with Buffalo Trace and just recently Bulliet. I think it was Sensay on here that said keep trying them and eventually you’ll start liking them all. I think I’m almost there.

I like Johnnie Black, but am not too fond of Jack or Jameson. I really like Makers Mark. It’s one of my favorite Bourbon Whiskey’s.

You might like Bakers. I think it’s worth a try at least.

Will keep that in mind.

This is my collection so far. From left to right my least favorite to liquid gold. Except the unopened Bulliet on the end. I have not tried it yet. Ido like every bottle in the collection except Jameson. I went to the store today and picked up the Bulliet and the replacement Buffalo Trace bottle that my neighbor and I destroyed last weekend.
BTW, Buffalo Trace edges out Woodford IMO. I like both about the same but 10-12 dollars cheaper IMO gives Buffalo Trace the win. The Bulliet cost the same as BT so I said WTH!! might as well try it. Cheers!!
I haven’t tried the Bulliet but I have the Bulliet Rye and it’s good. Let us know how it is, brother. Part of what I love is trying out new stuff all the time.
And have fun collecting, it’s quite a slippery slope. :)
I have tried both the Bulliet and the Bulliet Rye. Both are excellent.

Recommendations like this need a warning label attached them, partially because Johnnie black is a scotch and Baker’s is a bourbon, but mostly because Baker’s is 120 proof and only the hairiest of chests can handle it without a bit of dilution.

This was in response to the “I really like Makers Mark”. I guess it was kind of hidden in there.

Learn to drink it neat and you will learn to love whiskey the way it was meant to be loved.
And how is whiskey meant to be loved?
I was in Trader Joe’s today and noticed they have liquor now. I moseyed on over to check out the whisky section and was impressed they had a few brands I hadn’t heard of. I also spotted a TJ brand and it had a great price, 14.99. I took a gamble they had someone bottle a nice quality whisky under their brand and it would be a great deal. At the register it turned out to be an even better deal than I expected. At Costco I pay 8 bucks in tax for 1L of 25 dollar whiskey. For 750mL of 15 dollar whisky I only paid 3 dollars in tax. Washington state has some really wacky tax law.
My family had Monopoly night tonight so i had to try the whisky out to make it through. If you’ve ever played Monopoly with 3 young kids you understand. Anyway, my initial impression was “wow this is really smooth” then the burn kicked in with a sweet spicy flavor and an end note that reminded me of raisins. I thought it was really nice and might be the best value I’ve found as far as being palatable and affordable.
I also did a little research and it turns out it’s distilled and bottled in Taiwan then shipped half way around the world and sold in Washington State for 15 bucks.

I would have to say that it depends on the whisky or whiskey you are drinking. I have had some that are better neat, and some that really benefit from a splash of water and, on occasion, an ice cube.
Not all whisky or whiskey should be drunk neat.

And it’s labeled “Kentucky Bourbon?”
It’s amazing what a few greased palms can accomplish.
