This is why Jim Wendler programmed in the de-load week.[/quote]
Actually, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing and it’s worked well but once every 4 weeks is not nearly enough drinking for me lol

Been lurking over this awesome website for a long time. It’s strange that a whiskey thread brought me out of the shadows. This is my first post. Anyway, I like a drink as much as the next guy but up until now it’s was mainly just beer or occasional mixed drink. Beer sorta bloats me up which I don’t like. I’m gonna start trying whiskey’s neat. Don’t particularly like JD. From watching this thread, I think I wanna start with Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve. Do you guys think this would be a good start?

If you haven’t drunk much whiskey then a bourbon might hit you hard like it does in the movies…coughing a bit.
Different people resond differently but I never get a hangover with whiskey, of course taking into account that one shouldn’t drink too much anyway.
Irish whiskey or Canadian stuff tends to be a bit smoother and easier to drink. Maybe try a bottle of that first, but still there’s nothing wrong with going straight to bourbon.
Just do not start with Laphroaig! That one is great, but if someone new to whiskey were to try that I think they’d never touch the stuff again.
Thanks for the response. I think I’ll go straight to bourbon. I’ll post here when I’ve tried either Buffalo Trace or Woodford. Leaning towards Buffalo because of the cost and reviews I’ve seen. If for some reason I don’t like I will try one of the Irish whiskeys Thx again.

You might want to try whiskey over ice first because the ice sweetens and smoothes the drink, but to each his own.
Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, or Bulleit would probably be good bourbons to start with - good quality, easy to find.
If you’re going for Irish, Bushmills is very tasty.
For Canadian, Crown Royal seems to have a good following.
There are much better stuff out there (Johnny Walker Gold is a personal favorite), but before you pay the extra cash, you might want to start with the big names first.
I will look into Bulleit…that is one badass looking bottle. The name is also badass. I thought Bulleit had a high rye content? Does that make it less smooth for sipping?

Some of us talked about it a few pages back.
Bulleit makes two types, “original” bourbon and Bulleit Rye. Like I said earlier, they’re both pretty smooth at the start and easy to sip, with the bourbon having a bit sweeter finish and the rye ending a bit more sour.
Regarding training, the only rules of thumb I try to keep is to only drink around dinner (while cooking or eating) and not drink on days I lift. Whether that’s motivation to train more frequently or less, I haven’t decided.

Woodford is great to start with, but that’s about as high as I’d go to start as far as proof (90 proof I believe). Ideally you should find something tasty but start around 80 proof and build up a bit. Basil Hayden’s would fit this bill nicely.
To add to the whiskey collection I picked up a bottle of Ardbog. Ardbeg’s limited release scotch for the year. Haven’t opened it but I’m excited for it.
Tried Knob Creek when I went out to eat tonight… I hated it. The smell, taste I did not like at all. They didn’t have Woodford or Bulleit. Maybe I should try an Irish first? If Bourbon’s all taste somewhat similar, I’m probably not gonna like any of them. Do you guys think Woodford would be different? BTW I drank it neat 1st then added a liitle water…didn’t change the taste

Yeah, compared to Irish whiskey bourbon will have a sweetness and kick that you may not like.
