I have been lifting at home more than the gym. I only have dumbells at home, so that’s what I’ve been using, along with push ups chin ups, crunches, and various gym class exercises. I am going to get a multi purpose bench and a barbell and more weights. I can only afford to get one per month though, and I am going to get the best quality I can afford. which one would you get first? bench or barbell?
I would say go for the barbell.

Me too, though I’d also say to get the bench asap.
i doubt you need “best” quality with a barbell or plates or maybe even the bench. as long as they dont have imbalances (plates sometimes arent as much as they say) then personally i’d never spend so much money on them.
but yes go for the barbell first

barbell
what weight do your dbs go up to?
prolly barbell
the dumbells go up to 40 lbs each. I just bought a cheapy olympic bar, 2 35’s, and 2 10’s to get started. I only spent 150 bucks. Now I’m off to a friends to watch the fights and I will try them out tomorrow. I’ve almost talked my brother in law into buying a bench. we’ll see how that goes.
Do floor presses for a while.
I would vote barbell.
It lets you do pretty much everything you could want, to some degree or another.
Barbell. That price is a little high. I always remember seeing 300 lb olympic sets for $99-109. Of course now I can’t find any.

The olympic 300 pound sets here are 139.99$ last time I checked

I’m pretty sure that I got a 300# olympic set for $110 at Dick’s sporting goods, just about a year ago.

That’s probably more realistic. I haven’t checked in a while. Is gas still $1.50/gal?

If the last time you looked was about 8 years ago…
I haven’t looked at weight prices recently, but they typically don’t fluctuate much. Dick’s has the 300# olympic set on sale quite often (at least once or twice a month) and it has never changed price.
At first I read your post completely literally, then realized sarcasm can be hard to detect in written word.
The price of weights has gone up in the past 6 months. Probably about 15-20%.
Barbell. You can do lots more stuff with a barbell like cleans.
Barbell
Barbell, then squat rack, then bench a distant 3rd
shit i forgot to say check craigslist.com, I would buy a power rack next, if you can find a nice priced one.
Well, the 3 piece barbell was a piece of crap. I took it to work and had a coworker weld it into one piece. Much better. The bench I was looking at was a weider from sears. It has a squat rack behind the bench press area. you can find it easily on their website. Any good or a waste of money?
I am debating building a squat rack and bench out of 2" square tubing and having it welded in sections so I can bring it to the basement and bolt it all together. This would probably cost a few hundred in materials, but being an engineer and machinist I’m pretty sure it would be higher quality and customized to my space and needs. Has anybody else done this? How did it turn out?
