Which Lift is Easier - Hang or Power Clean

By easier, I mean on which one can a lifter typically lift more on. When I say hang clean by the way, I mean picking up from the floor to your waste, then cleaning it, which is how I always do it. First rep is basically the deadlift and then the clean, the remaining reps are all from the hang position.

I was wondering because back in HS Football, we would always do hang cleans up until we got a new coach, then we would do power cleans. Everyone’s maxes on power cleans went way up very fast, and they did way more than they ever did on hang clean. However, we didn’t do hang cleans regularly anymore so I don’t know what most of them could do. One of my friends told me he could do a lot more on power than hang, one told me it was the same.

From all this, I’d guess normally a persons power clean will be higher than the hang due to getting more momentum, and for not having to go through the full deadlift motion. However my hang clean is much higher than my power clean is. However, I am a weird lifter with the way my numbers on different lifts compare.

So is it typical for a power clean to be higher than a hang clean, the reverse or are they usually roughly the same.

Hang cleans can be separated into two categories: the hang power clean and the hang full clean.
If we are talking about the hang power clean (from the hang and catching in an above parallel position) then the power clean should allow larger weights. If we are talking about the full hang clean then this will allow more weight than the power clean (in general).
I assume you are referring to the hang power clean, in which case yes the power clean will usually allow more weight as the lifter can build up more momentum from the bottom position than from the hang.

I have a friend who has also done mainly hang cleans and is now starting to do power cleans, and you obviously mean the hang power clean or whatever since you did it for football. Basically it could be two problems. Either your form is still in the progress of learning to power clean, or like my friend your weak with the deadlift portion of the lift, in which case I’d suggest to keep working at it. Just make sure you have proper footing and keep the bar close to your body when coming up from the pull from the ground.

Like RicRob said. It’s probably that you have a slow deadlift. Otherwise a full power clean should be able to get more weight than hanging.

Great question, I have wondered this often too!

Personally I can lift more weight power cleaning from the floor rather than hang power cleaning. Going on how the lifts feel, the power clean is a lot quicker and easier to build speed.

Aah, so the hang power clean is what the lift I mentioned is called. Yeah, I am weak with the deadlift portion of the lift, which is why I started doing deadlifts. But basically, I max out at 245 on a hang clean…and my deadlift is less than 50 pounds more than that. Hopefully though, the deadlifts will help me get stronger in that area. I have never regularly done deadlifts until now, so I expect it to go up fast.

by full hang clean do you mean where you start off taking it off a wrack, and not having to pick it up the floor…I’ve heard it called a “box clean” as well. Anyways, I would imagine that for most people that is easier, but I am much more comfortable with the hang power clean, picking it up from the floor. Maybe its just because I’m used to the movement.

The term “hang” pertains to where the lift starts, i.e. in your hands standing up. The term “power” pertains to where you catch/rack the bar, i.e. thighs above parallel. A hang power clean starts with you standing up with the bar, then you lower/dip the bar to a particular position (above the knees, below the knees, etc) and you explode up and catch the bar with your thighs above parallel. Does this make sense??

You can pick up the bar from the floor or a rack or even boxes to get to the start position, standing.
