For your purposes, 1.5" manila rope would probably be more than adequate. I bought 75 feet of it for a tug-o-war a few months back. Excellent grip, and it’s only about $0.60 a foot.

I found the perfect rope, but my wife won’t let me untie it from the bedposts.
