do you lift until failure?
i lift on every set until i can’t do another rep with full ROM and half-decent form, some cheating is always necessary on the last rep
Personally, yes. Unless its a warmup set, I always do. With TWO exceptions
- Neck exercises - I only do isometrics.
- Rotator cuff/scapula - Lower weight, higher reps … not to failure.
No.

With you there Otep. Me neither.
OP - Is there a reason for your question? I mean are you asking “Should I lift to failure all the time”? or something else?
No. Well, not really.
I work up to my PR’s over the course of a few weeks, then try to beat them every week after. I do eventually hit failure, but it takes many weeks. When I stall on trying to improve my lifts, by failing to meet target reps at a certain weight, I will work my way back up again.
So over the course of many weeks I may hit failure 2 or 3 times.
Lifting to failure is not my goal; I strive to avoid failure! However, it is inevitable. ![]()

Wait a minute- Renton, you train? I thought you just did cycles of test to boost your sexual performance?
The mind boggles.

Not at the moment, depends on what training program I’m following.
Very, very rarely.
Lifting until failure is the largest part of my over-training in high school. I ate like Thanksgiving every damn day and never gained an ounce.
That being said, I guess it would depend on your training goals.

BWAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAA!
Seriously mate - LMFAO!
Actually my current training program does actually call for failure on a couple of body parts.
Early in the week I do pushing lifts, BB flat bench, incline DB bench, DB Flies, Military press etc, then at the end of the workout I give my triceps and additional blast with four sets of dips to failure each set. That’s the only direct tricep work I do and they are growing nicely.
Similar things later in the week after pulling exercises - I’ll hit my Bi’s with a few stes to failure.
Core too - Leg raises and crunches, 4 sets of each, all to failure.
Having said that, this is the first time I’ve used a training regime like this. Working to failure is rare for me.
I am enjoying this workout though.
I’m doing DC, so yeah…most lifts are to failure. Failure three times in a row, in fact.
My volume is reduced though.
