Sam is your waistline around 42in in your profile pic? You definitely don’t look fat there but 42in sounds huge to me. I have a slightly naturally smaller waistline than most it seems (structurally, not because of low body fat which I never really have) but I get “uncomfortable” around 35in., I just think of a fat guy when I hear 42in waist (again, I wouldn’t say any of your profile pics look fat).

No I’ve dropped some fat since I was 240’ish with a 42ish waist. It fluctuated between 41 and 42 once I got past 240lbs. The pics below are me at 240. I don’t mind the level of fat in any part of my body in those pics except the gut. The bodpod measured me at 25% bf at the time. I’m down to 225 and 38-39 inch waist now in my current avatar. Keep in mind even when I was 190 and pretty lean my waist was still 35 inches. I’m going to drop to 210 and then try and get back up to 240 but leaner.
After seeing the OPs pics, I don’t think he’s fat at all. I’d keep bulking if that were me.
If your perception of ‘being fat’ bothers you, then no matter how much progress you’re making, it will always be in the very back of your mind. Even though I undoubtedly say to keep bulking, I also suggest that you make sure things are clean as well as possibly scale back a day or two each week, almost as a control aspect.
‘Bulking’ doesn’t have to always be a completely uncontrolled several month long binge, it can be methodical, even a carb cycled approach (minimize adipose accumulation)
I guess it is a random number but how many skinny bastards do you know that sqaut 500
And how many fat bastards are out there that can’t squat 500? Do you advise them to continue bulking till they squat 500 lbs or get their weight under control?
As far as the OP’s question, I’m not sure how someone else can answer this for you. It’s ultimately about how you want to look and what your comfortable with. Some people don’t look so bad with a few extra pounds. I personally don’t think I’m one of them. I carry most of my weight in belly when I’m carrying to much fat so I had to stop my bulk at 240lbs. Alot of the other guys on this site carry the extra weight much better so they can get away with bulking to a heavier weight. {SteelyD would be an example) If my body stored more fat on my arms, upper back or legs I probably would’ve kept going to 260. I personally set my limit to around 42 inches tape measure around the waist (not pants size).
Edit: And by “fat bastards” I mean obese guys that are beginner/novice level and aren’t holding too much muscle.
Everyone isn’t built like you. I have a wide waist even when I am lean enough to see abs. It is one reason my shoulders and back have to be wide enough to compensate for it. That is why going off of waist measurement alone doesn’t give you the whole picture. Some guys with larger frames could be very lean even with a 36" waist, especially if they are over 6 feet tall.
my waist size now is 38", even with abs and barely any muscle i was 35". if i can hold 260lbs and be back at a 35 " waist i think i would look big enough to be happy, may be

A guy with a large frame may not even be able to get his waist under 35" even if he is very lean. These would be the types more likely to reach those higher body weights naturally and also more likely to even do well as powerlifters.
i feel like in the past 6-8 months i’ve made the most progress (muscle and strength) just because of the enlightening fact of i never ate near enough. i always thought i needed huge amounts of protein to get bigger and stronger, while that is part of the equation, but i mainly needed about 1500 more calories to start really growing. again i’m no where near physique i want but i can say its not merely a dream any more but is very obtainable even with out the aid of gear.
i’ll be honest that alot of my outlook on other bigger guys has always been, “ppsshh, they’re on gear who gives a fuck” but i now realize there are probably fewer people on the roids than i thought and even at the size they are its possible no gear was used.
thanks to the guys here that dont bullshit (too much) and tell it like it is. this forum really opened my eyes last year as to how uneducated and clueless i really am.

Right, which is why I asked. Unfortunately I have a lot of screwed up things with my body that fight against my BBing goals but it seems like I’m lucky when it comes to waist size (I’m about 6’1 too so it’s not like I’m short or something). As you mentioned above though I’m sure that would be a downside if I were more into powerlifting.

Hey, I wish I didn’t have a wide waist. However, that is likely one reason I can lift like I do and why I can reach the body weights that I have. That is also the very last area on me to lean up.
I struggle with bulking myself. I really just don’t want to be/look fat. It’s a mental thing that makes what we do all the more difficult. When I can’t see definition in my muscles I question why I’m even lifting and not on a damn treadmill. I type this as I drink an 1100 calorie shake.

Ive been fighting a battle with this since October of last year and so far im losing…

Dude, no offense, but you piss me off. You have a shit load of potential but you seem to hold YOURSELF back.
You should be making pretty much the same progress King Beef is more or less…but you are afraid to eat.

Eh, I have the same problem. It doesn’t help that chicks really like a lean guy that much more. Honestly, I didn’t get any attention until I got lean.
I would love to be 220+, but know that I would have to get a little chubby to do it. At my biggest I was only to 205 at around 13%, but as soon as I got leaner I got a bunch of, “Wow, have you gotten bigger!? Dude you look swole!” I just goes to show how far T-Nation is from your typical US citizen, lol.
It also doesn’t help now that it’s summer. But no more crying, truth is, I just don’t want it bad enough.

However, once I’m not single. Game on.
Why do you care so much about looking good for others? Is having shallow women be attracted to you your only motivation for lifting?
How old are you?
I used to be in your same boat, but once I got in my 20s I realized it was pretty stupid to train for others. You are the one putting the work in the gym. Train for yourself, or in 5 and 10 years, your going to be the same guy.
Sorry for the hijack, but this type of thing gets to me.

lol if anything I would think it’d be the opposite. I’m single now and prefer it like that in college, but in that case more of getting with girls is based on how you look. A steady girlfriend on the other hand could probably better understand that your going to temporarily be a little soft. Kind of like how a lot of women let themselves go when they get married haha. Not to get completely off topic though…
