When to Stop Bulking?

Hey guys, first time poster, long time reader. Its the people here and the muscles I’ve seen that really got my muscle building juices flowing.

Heres a little history. Im 21 years old, 5’11 and 150 pounds (I know, dont flame me) and im bulking. I was 210 about a year ago and started to cut and here I am.

I’ve read about the get shredded diet and am very interested in it. Now, I know that diet is pointless for me because I have nothing to shred too as of now. But I am interested in following it when im ready to cut my fat after my bulk. I am very disciplined and think I could be very successful at this diet when the time is right.

My question is this, I do not want to be a very big guy. Although I respect those out there that have built there body like this, it is just not for me. Dont get me wrong, I do want muscle and definition I just want to have a muscular, lean body. When would be my best time to stop bulking at start this diet. I know I have some ways to go, Im just curious. What weight would I have to be to cut down to a very lean physique?

Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

Stop whe you have reached your goal how big you want to be. youll of course want to weight more than the end goal and cut down from there losing the fat and presevring the muscle. say you want to be 180 and as lean as you are now at 150. well lkely youll need to add 40-50lbs and cut 10-20 lbs off.

Dependent on BF now etc this is very loose littl explanation etyc but as long as you dont go hog wild and add a shit ton of BF here is no real reason to stop the bulk and cut until you have made it whwere you aim to be. if you do your just wasting time that could be used to reach your goal.

Pretend you want to want to be the next Paul Dillet. Train and EAT that way. You can always knock it off when you start getting “too big”.

At 5’11" and only 150 lbs, you are one seriously scrawny little dude. You need to stop worrying about getting “too big”. It doesn’t happen overnight. Neither will gains. Get to it!

Oh, and the only sure time that you must stop bulking is around 18-20%. This is where your T-levels sink so that gains invariably come more in the form of fat than muscle.

Just remember, when you do cut, you will lose at least 3 to 6 months of gains. Maybe even more than 6 months worth, if you do it stupidly. This is because some time, muscle and strength is lost during cutting, and more time is lost during the ramping back up afterwards.

So don’t be a yo-yo, and you will grow, yo! (Yeah, that rhyme was whack.)

thanks. Im not worried about getting to big, i was just telling you my goals. Im in this for the long haul. I have no problem putting the time and determination into my bulking phase. I was just curious when it would be a good time to cut given the body Id like to have.

Train and EAT like you want to be huge. Even if you don’t want to be that big, it will take a while, and even longer if you half ass it.

That said, nobody can really answer that question for you. It’s not very descriptive, and even if it was, it’s completely dependent on your genetics and build. Just watch how you’re looking.

And definitely get bigger than you want to be, because it’s a lot easier to lose muscle than to gain it, and you’ll probably lose some when you cut.

i really hear what you guys are saying. I really appreciate the advice.

Im following the hypertrophy programs in NROL right now and eating about 3000 calories a day.

Monday: upper
Tuesday: lower
Wednesday: 19 minute HIIT (for minimal fat gain)
Thursday: upper
Friday: lower
Saturday: 19 minute HIIT
Sunday: off

is that training hard enough. Like you said, I dont want to have ass it. Im either going for it or not going at all.

Is a 3000 calorie diet good to go with my workouts?

Sure, if you go right into a cutting phase after bulking you may lose your recent gains. However, if you ease off of one and into the other, continue to perform resistance training, and eat right, you can avoid this.

thats my plan!

so once I do reach my goal weight after bulking, do you think the get shredded diet would be a good plan to follow to get cut?

im just planning ahead, I like to know whats ahead of me.

Eat more. HIIT less.

even less HIIT? its only 2 days a week. thats my only cardio…

but anyways, can I look forward to the get shredded diet when i’ve reached my bulking goal? Is that my best bet to cut afterwards?

Interesting. Where did you hear that from?

Cardio sucks if you’re not training for a sport. It’s even worse for you if you’re bulking. Just don’t eat the shit food that you are planning to burn off with your cardio. Same results.

My guess is “Straight outta My ass Journal”. They publish five times a month.

-iceman-, properly done, HIIT can be complementary to your goals. Check out Christian Thibaudeau’s article, “Running Man – Energy-System Work to Get Lean & Mean,” http://www.T-Nation.com/readTopic.do?id=459414

thanks. i read the article. I figured 2 HIIT sessions a week wouldnt hurt my gains that much. My goal is to try my best to keep fat gain to a minimum during the bulk, so something like HIIT made sense.

thanks

sorry to keep bringing it up, but I never really got an answer. When I feel I’ve bulked enough and really want to lean out to show off my new found muscles, will the get shredded diet work in my favor?

If I were you I’d worry about making some gains for now and by the time any kind of cutting makes sense for you, you will have a lot more knowledge about yourself which will put you in a much better position to decide how to proceed then.
