When I grow up, I want to be an Alicorn

Perhaps it’s the hairstyle or me being half asleep but I thought that was Tia Toomey’s upper body.

Look strong and powerful!

Wednesday AM

35 minute easy trail run.

I managed to not trip today. Success. Walked up some of the steepest hills to keep the heart rate down, this is supposed to be more of a recovery run. Great morning, 70 and clear.

Lifting to follow this evening. Training is getting squished into 4 days this week. More on that later.

I like this conditioning day, but moving slowly through it is pretty easy. I kept the cardio portions Tabata style to keep the pace up. It was a lot of wandering around the gym to get between equipment. The finisher was awesome, I will keep that in the rotation.

Moving deadlifts up to tomorrow. Long trip coming up this weekend and through next week. Which makes next week an easy choice for an intermission from Summa, and a deload.

Thursday
Gym Jones Summa W6D3

Pull ups - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Box Jumps - 3 x 5

Low Handle Trap Bar Deadlift
2 x 170
2 x 170
2 x 180
2 x 210
3 x 230 (PR)

OH Press
2 x 65
2 x 65
2 x 75
2 x 95
2 x 105

25lb Med Ball:
100 Bear Hug Squats
100 Ball Slams

My last tested 1RM for DL was 225. I was only supposed to do 2 reps at 230, but I was so happy about the PR I did a bonus celebration rep.
Press got stuck at 1.5 reps at 105, I fought and wiggled it up to what could loosely be called a lockout. 100 was the planned weight, but once again, new gym has everything but 2.5s. So I just have to get stronger by bigger increments.

On that note, after work hubby and I are off to Oregon to drive the 101. I’ll be mostly MIA for the next 10 days. I have hikes and running on the beach planned. It is not backcountry like we prefer, but I am crazy excited to camp on a beach. And drive. So much driving.

Aaaand I’m back.
This post will be about my trip, next post will be about training.

2700 miles covered. Beach was driven on twice. Sand dunes rallied. Clam chowder and fish and chips were consumed multiple times. Random walks and a few easy hikes. We started the coast at Astoria, Oregon and finished at the Jedidiah Smith Redwoods in California. Fantastic trip. I am tired from the constant movement and camping. I had a ton of fun, and I am good for a while on beaches. Craving red rock again.
My Fitbit died around day 3 and I didn’t bother charging it, but the first few days were 12k+ steps. No training. Not a single burpee or run (other than chasing seagulls around the beach) was done. Training is not the point while on these trips.

Training plans:
I have another week-long trip planned, it is a convenient six weeks away. This trip will be to Texas. All the bbq will be eaten. So what program do you run for six weeks before eating a lot of meat? Super Squats.
Some readers may remember I gave SS a go a few months ago and was plagued with exertion headaches after two weeks. My hope is with the conditioning I have been adding I will not get those this time. Either way, the full 6 weeks need to happen, I don’t like leaving it unfinished.

The plan is to do SS two days a week, 5lb increases as often as I can finagle plate loading (no 2.5s at new gym), 10lbs if I need to. I am keeping a conditioning-only day as the third lifting day,
likely in the form of WODs and a bunch of sled work. Also going to keep running 2-3 days a week. My poor legs.

I picked up 40lbs of ground beef, some ground chicken, and pork shoulders from my butcher on the way home from the trip. Probably going to go through most of that.

Tonight we meal prep, tomorrow we lift.

You’re living your best life, and I’m so here for it! I enjoy reading these updates and seeing your photos. Out of curiosity, how did you start busying yourself with these awesome trips? Did your family take you camping a lot when you were a kid or what?

Well, thank you! My shoulders are my best feature.

Quite the opposite. I can only remember two camping trips as a kid. Besides that, my parents would take us to the same condo every year. As I got older we traveled around a bit more, visiting my siblings. (I am the youngest, all my siblings moved away long before I graduated high school.) I always knew I wanted a life of travel. I spent years 16-20 living in a few states with different siblings and then out of my car for a couple of months.
My hubby grew up spending 3 months every summer (his parents were teachers) living out of the back of a Land Cruiser traveling the backcountry of Utah and surrounding areas. We met and the lifestyles matched. We have kept our work, expenses and hobbies focused on travel. Life is just so damn short, and we are young and healthy now. Together we have been to over a dozen countries, and at least that many states.

Biscuits and gravy, Batman! I do not know why I thought SS was a good idea. The ball is rolling now. I was anxious all the way through the squats. Need to calm my mind for these, I know I can do it.
Had dinner before this and it threatened a reappearance during the squats and deadlifts.

you have no idea how excited I was to read that. LOL Are you doing the breathing reps for your squats as per the book ?

I am! Well, it was controlled for the first 7 reps or so, after that the breaths were more than 2… But you know how that goes!

LOL I certainly do. Pretty sure I was getting 10 breaths in the later reps.
