Coach D and others,
What does it really take to play D-1 A or D-1 aa college football? I understand that mentality is a huge part of the equation. What do coaches look for in a high school senior athlete? How do i make the big step from high school to college? I would love to hear from anyone thats been there and done it. Thank you all for your time.
First of all if you want this you must attack with a ferocious never-say-die approach. Character and Committment are qualities that can never be understated. Physical characteristics of speed, agility and power need to developed in a balanced and sport specifc manner. Be ruthless in your approach. I look forward to hearing from you. In faith, Coach Davies
Well, I would concur with Coach D’s article last week, that mental strength is a big part of being consistently successful. I would go to one of the combines or university camps and test for benchesX185, the 40 yd. dash and the shuttle run, especially if you’re not being recruited now. And/or, produce a tape of your season for coaches.
Then, I would advance in both the Davies and the Tate/Westside training protocols.
I assume you’re already a really good HS player.

Having played professional rugby in the UK, I have to agree that mental attitude is the biggest difference between those that make it and those that don’t. There’s so little (physically) between the majority of players. I feel that the mental aspect is so often overlooked - it’s criminal.
Keith.
I have to concur here as well. I’m currently preparing to enlist in the navy looking forward to getting a shot at BUD/S (Navy SEAL training). The one constant in my discussions with current and former active duty SEALs is that the mental aspect is the deciding factor. Too often people are looking for that one secret routine or magic powder to fulfill their goals and, while physical preparation is important and a good indicator fo mental toughness, many overlook the three d’s. This is why I’m such a fan of Coach Davies work.
the biggest physical difference between highschool and college ball is speed, you have to be damn quick.
I really wanted to play HS football this year, but the coach wouldn’t let me. I won’t go into deatail, but I hold a grudge with him.
Since that, I’ve moved on and now want a shot at College Ball. I know it can be done. Wether I can walk on or not depends on how dedicated I am and how much I am willing to sacrfice. After wrestling, I am doing Davies style training with a Poloquin/King Hypertrophy element. I will need to gain 40 lbs and a shit loads of strength while maintaining agility and endurance.
This is a critical time in my life. I have so many options (as I described in other post’s). I can make or break so many things. It sounds like you the right idea, you are the only one that decides weither you will take it up a notch.
Beandog - just read your post in another thread with your physical attributes. You should like in good condition, with solid speed related skills. My concern is with your goals to increase your body weight - would you be going against your greatest asset (mobility). Naturally, that might depend on how underweight you are but I do feel you should develop that speed and agilty for the game so that no one can keep you off the field again. I look forward to hearing from you. In faith, Coach Davies
you sound like you’re in solid shape /not should. Hope I didnt confuse you. In faith, Coach Davies
Hey Coach davies…How might one retain your services and what is your going rate? Thanks

Yo Beandog im in the same exact boat as u dog, I wanted to play my senior year as i had already explained to coach davies in a previous post and i too am goin to make a commitment to try and platy some college ball.
Only thing i have a problem with is my size and speed i need to improve my forty and whatever other test they perform at spring camp. My fastest 40 time i have ever ran was a 4.7 hand timed i am currently 6’0 230 i havce played defensive line and some linebacker though i was listed as a d lineman i feel i am undersized for a d linman. My thing is im only 18 and feel i have much room for improvement with size stregnth and speed. I will give it my all. Attitude determines altitude.
