What does a competitive parallel squat actually look like?

Honestly frustrated with trying to figure out squat depth (powerlifting). What does parallel actually look like? What points on the body are you actually looking at? Is there a decent diagram somewhere?

The example on the left is above parallel; the middle one us to parallel, and the one on the right below parallel.

Which federation are you wanting to compete under? Read their rulebook to get the answer.

Most all of the powerlifting federations want a squat depth that is when your femur is parallel to the floor. What that looks like from the relationship of your hips, thigh, and knee is a matter of visual interpretation.

The best recourse for you is to work out with some who are competitive powerlifters and seek their assistance. Next best recourse is post a video from the side of you squatting and we will offer our opinion.

Basic rule of thumb is that your hip crease has to be below your knee.

This is the IPF standard I’ve used. But squats do look very different between individuals.

Maybe this gives some insight: https://youtu.be/Lf-PC0AGDqM?si=Afkf7qdlLK3oD3KK

Middle pic would pass in most feds.

At the risk of asking a stupid question, am I correct in assuming the point we’re looking for is where the crease starts - e.g. the top tip of the check mark?

Most likely USAPL.

What does their rulebook say?

They ( USAPL)use to be assholes about depth… cant say how the are now.
