What Constitutes Strong?

Right. We are striving for being strong and in bad ass conditioning at the same time. This can be done, but it is difficult.

Not sure on the rest between reps. That is going to happen a little bit by nature. With squats even strong guys pause a bit between reps when doing 20’s.

My personal standard for the deadlift is that you can’t let go of the bar. That’s it. Once you do the set is over.
okay… when i do my deads, i’ll keep my hands on the bar the entire time for the set.

just curious… how many of these have you hit yourself?? I find that most people are either strong pressers, pullers or squatters. I don’t know many people that are equally strong on all three. I, myself, am a decent presser and squatter. i have a serious case of t-rex arms and deads are definitely a challenge but one i enjoy.

I haven’t hit any of these actually.

I’ve pulled 500x10 lots of times. Squatted 500x3’s 5’s 8’s lots of times. I don’t wear a belt or knee wraps ever. Neither was even close to failure. I just haven’t pushed reps in a while. Best on chins is 100x3 @ 260 (Jim and I had a challenge on this a while back). Bench I’m actually not sure of. Because of a permenant shoulder injury I usually stick to singles but I think I can stay light (no more than 335) and be ok. I’m coasting right now as I am dieting and do 315x10 on close grips every other week as an afterthought. I’ve overhead pressed 275 for a triple strict at 255ish.

I consider myself to be a shitty lifter on everything. Hitting these benchmarks would make me feel better about it.

I plan on pushing reps for my meet in August to see how it goes. Might do some SMART singles in the final couple of weeks before the meet, just to test bar speed with certain weights. If I take my squat up to 500x12-15 and dead to 500x15+ I will fully expect my 1RM to be up. 315x15-18 should be doable close grip.

i would say you are pretty damn close on most of them. closer than i am. I consider myself an average lifter with no real talent. I just love to lift weights and push myself. If you wouldn’t mind, I would love to have you post your progress in this thread. It would definitely motivate me as well as others.

I keep my log at the blog (yes that rhymes).

Many of the competitors said it felt liek they were pulling against bands, so that’s 725ish at the top. And WSM has been known to be somewhat … generous … when they are estimating weights

Thanks. In case no one was paying attention I also did a two part interview with Eric Lilliebridge on there. Great guy and great lifter.

These numbers are doable- check out Alpha’s log(which is awesome btw).

"So I turn 30 in about 6.5 weeks…and this had me thinking. I’m not glad to see 30 at all-and I’ve decided to make it not too happy to see me either…So i have set some goals I’d like to hit by May 26th…They are pretty lofty, but we will see what I can do…They look like this:

Deads: 650x1
Squat: 605x1
Military: 315x1
Bench: 475x1
Incline Bench: 435x1
Pull-ups: BW + 200x3
Dips: BW + 275x3
Run 1.5 Miles in 9:30

Of course I will have vids for all of them and progress pics, so keep an eye out…with any hope I will be able to hit some of these numbers."

I respectfully disagree.
Me too…

Johnnytang, You think deadlifting 500x20 is easier to achieve than pressing 315 overhead once, standing?
I think 500x20 in the dead is easier than a strict, standing 315lbs press. Anyone I can think of that can do a 315lbs military press can probably pretty easily do the deadlift, but not the other way around.
I have no doubt that I will get a 315 standing military press well before a 500x20 deadlift (assuming I can ever deadlift heavy again). My case is obviously not the norm though, so you’re probably right.
Maybe it has to do with the length of your ‘bench specialist’ arms.

I guess I shouldn’t say anything, since we use the same rack height.

His post about Karate Kid is literally one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. Total fucking win.

Agreed! The KK and Lilliebridge interviews were gold too.

I’m such a pussy, these numbers are out of my comprehension

To me, strong on the main three lifts is
Bench 315
Squat 315
Dead 405

If big JW thinks a 500 x 20 squat is strong, i wonder what the regular public thinks of it hah
You need to start working out then. And 500x20 is pretty ridiculous, seeing as Tom Platz, possibly the best (or one of) endurance squatter there has been, got it for 23.
You know, I would like to see a video of wendler doing a 500x20 squat. Is this considered calling him out? Maybe.

All I’m sayin’ is… platz has a video.

I don’t remember Jim saying he could do it. We said that’s what we felt was the elite level of repping strength. I can’t do it and neither can Jim.

I’m good for around 500x8-10 on my best day and Jim I think is 510x10 as a best. This is just something we feel is a great goal to work towards.

deadlift night- everything is progressing nicely. i came up with a plan to hit the deadlift goal of 500x20. I’ve decided to pull against bands for reps with 405 for 10 reps and then increase the reps with 405 until i reach 20. then, i’ll up the weight to 455, starting over at 10 reps and working back up to 20. the bands add approximately 100lbs at lockout. once i can hit 455 x 20 against bands i should be golden for 500 x 20. my goal for tonight was 405 x 10 against bands. i hit that pretty easily. next time my goal will be 15 reps. i also used my t-rex deadlift technique for the first time with some moderate weight. i really like it. i’m stick’n with it.

anyway… this is what i did after my normal ME dead routine

deadlift against minibands
315x4
405x10- this was a good start towards my goal.

Looks good. I don’t think there is any doubt once you hit 20 with that, that your 1RM strength will have improved by quite a bit.
RealPC wrote:

i’m hoping it will increase my level of conditioning more than anything. i’m really bad about doing higher reps on the big lifts. I do a ton of high rep stuff on accessory day but not with moderate to heavy weight on bench, squat and deads. i guess i’ve just been lazy. i’m hoping to change that.

i plan to do something similiar with squats as well.

thanks hoss!!
