Westside Questions III

Can no one help an internet-challenged moron out?

all equipment if allowed in the APF. bench shirts cant be pulled down past the arm pit. thats a new rule. and canvas is not allowed. other than that you can wear anything you want.

Thanks, Goldberg.

I’m going to watch my first meet next weekend. I’m pumped to see how it works. I mailed off my entry for my first meet in November just yesterday.

Just a quick querie on bench shirts. Just decided (well got money available) for a new shirt in short time before my main comp for the year. This was mainly influenced by my ME bench day i did 420 easily and would have managed 440 as well if the ‘spotter’ didnt grab it at the end. So, anyone who has tried multiple INZER shirts, how much of a difference in groove have you noticed between the plain old blast and the EHPHD? I wouldnt have a huge amount of time to practice in the shirt and just wondering how much of a difference between them there would be?

Save some more cash and get yourself a denim if you plan on competing.

Newsflash. Metal gear just came out with bp shirts. I’m going to order one based on what I’ve seen with the other gear they make.

I’ve heard mixed reactions on the Metal shirts thus far. Let us know how it goes, irondoc.

Well I need a shirt. I didn’t get one since the inzer at 148 15 years ago. I was going to get a karin’s on a friends recommendation, but I’ll be the guiniea pig. It won’t ship until 10/15.

While its a nice idea to save some more cash. when I go for gear check before lifting the IPF judges may say no to the new denim

Not everyone competes in a denim federation. I only have the IPF

Reading your post again, I have also been competing since 1989, I havent much experience in shirts due to to a few years worth of break and not caring about buying new ones.

Cyco - IPF go with the $77 hphd blast from Inzer single ply of course. It works just as well as the more expensive poly shirts from inzer. The only problem is dude you have to get it fucking tight. I mean fucking tight. I weigh 260 pounds and I wear a size 58-60. With this shirt it should truly take you no less than 2 people to put it on you. I know you have experence using a shirt, so to get the most out of this model you must get it tight. If it is relly tight you will get out of it as much as the more expensive models. Also with this shirt you do not have to bring th bar extremely low. The groove seems to be just below the nipples. I have found this shirt to be as good as a poly shirt as is out there for he IPF, I have 2 shirts that are not IPF legal, a 2 ply Inzer EHPHD blast 2 ply open back, And a Franz Double Demin. And I have found that with the single ply HPHD blast if yu get it tight enough I can get about 75% of what I can get out of my denim wich I use for SLP meets. My other inzer is too big for me and sucks cock. Dude the key is to get the shirt tight trust me. Good Luck and remember get it tight lol…Big Martin

Thanks Bigmartin
I have ordered a EHPHD cos they have it in stock (sometimes it sucks living in arsehole of the world), and have gone for a 52 (Im 242). Unfortuantely INZER changed their sizing a few years back so I cant match the sizing on mine to the new one, but the guy Im buying thru is the same size as me  which is useful. I prefer 1 person fitting the shirt, but its as tight as a nun  I have deep bruises up my arm/back from it on friday and it was my loose one…Looking forward to getting this fooker on and lifting some big iron

cycomiko-

Never mind then, haha. Didn’t realize you were going IPF.

From what little experience I have with poly shirts, I would agree with what bigmartin said about making sure it’s tight as it can possibly be. That, and I also agree that the groove will be a bit higher.

Hey guys I need to work on my grip and I was thinking about doing farmers walks on a nonlifting day. Any reccomendations (Im doing the beginner WS routine). I was thinking of doing it as part of a small (emphasize) extra workout on off days.

Additionally, I am going to try sledding after a friend suggested a very cheap way to make one. What would you vets reccomend regarding incorporating a sled to the workout (as warmup, recovery GPP on off days, etc?) for a beginner.

Last question, how do you do a seated dumbell power clean? With my legs out of the equation, Im a little confused as to from where the "power" comes.

Thanks guys!

I had grip problems also and fixed it by not using straps on any of my assistance rowing or pulling movements, at first i couldnt use as much as before, but now it isnt an issue. I also pinch gripped plates used a wrist roller and used a captain of crush gripper. Along with farmers walks, these should help, also when you compete try using wrist wraps ultra tight because it will enhance your grip on a deadlift.

Artguy- Use the sled as a warmup usually 6-10 trips incorperating the 60% rule. I also like it for upperbody and lower body recovery when I am very beat up for lowerbody I drag for time 10-20 minutes very ligth and for upperbody I also ue time 10 minutes of various drags. Big Martn

yo guys:
I know you dont do this but:
since I dont compete I decided to go for deeper squats (as deep as I can go -between PL squat and rock bottom) meaning my box squats where lower, DE lower, etc.

did it for the last 4 weeks

i just tested my max PL and deep squat, my deep one is still way behind my regular squat, but my regular squat is much better and quicker (still the same weight, havent tried for more then 180K, because of lack of sppoters)

either its because of the deep squats or the squat isometrics I did once a week, its working great. this relates to what was said about raw guys needing more full range work I guess.

the set was real quick, about 1.5 seconds.

I wish I had a power rack or something to help me test my max. maybe in m new O-lifting club.

btw I couldnt do a full pistol before starting west side (10 weeks) which is a full rom one-legged squat, and now I nailed it easily. my hamstring and glute strength has gone through the roof. I also managed 2-3 GHRs, though they hurt my knee, I cant extend fully under alot of weight so I dont lock my knees at the bottom(lift my sily ass a bit)

S-man

Gq dude-

Aside from not using straps on most assistance stuff (I will use them on heavy shrugs and snatch grip deads) I like to bring in some “holding” strength and “crushing” strength work in once a week when I feel my grip is lacking. I’ll usually do the holding strength work after my ME bench workout, and I’ll usually do the crushing strength work after DE bench days (simply because of the way my days are structured). For ideas, you can check some of the grip strength articles here in T-Mag…I know Waterbury, among others, has written a couple.

I wouldn’t overdo it with the sled or the extra workouts as a beginner…that is, unless you are very in-tune with your recovery abilities and don’t feel it’s being compromised with the extra work. Most recommend you don’t even do ANY extra work as a beginner.

If you choose to use the sled, I would start with a few short trips with lighter weight (couple hundred feet) working whatever is sore, and then call it a day. We’re talking ten minutes, tops, and not taxing at all. Just get some blood in the muscles. Guage things from there.

Thanks for the comments. I dont use straps btw.

Ok this week I have to do seated power cleans. What is the purpose of this exercise? I have no idea how to get it up while seated. how do you do it?

We do this as an assistance exercise to work the upper back, rear delts, and external rotators. It’s basically like doing a power clean from the hang except that you do it:

a)while seated
b)with dumbells
c)by finishing the movement like a dumbell external rotation (except more explosive)

It’s tough to explain without a visual. We also like to finish them with a press at the top at times. Actually, now that I think about it, it’s really more of an “explosive” cuban press performed with dumbells (with the explosive shrug that accompanies a clean)…at least the way we perform them here, anyway.

Yeah, like I said, tough without a visual.
