Ive started using the sfor some heavy squats some but man it helps but Im not used to the extra abdominal pressure and my release vale tends to burst LOL But A great tool. Also find A Tight belt great for the heavy yokes.

Just wondering mainly the DLing seems to me more in hindrance then and aid

they suck if you’re not consistent with them. Pick a number and always put it on at that point. Or put it on when your around 80% of your max.

I’m used to it now and I think it helps with the dl. could all be in my head too. who knows.

I was feeling tired today and had waited all day before finally deciding I was, in fact, going to make it to the gym. I showed up 45 minutes before the gym was closing and decided to drop front squats from the workout because I was feeling tired and I wouldn’t be able to fit everything in to 45 minutes with the squats. Despite the fact that I was feeling fatigued, I decided that today was a good day to finally try putting five plates on the bar (plus a couple chips for good measure). It seemed the only way to atone for skipping the squats. The first attempt came off the ground about four inches before I decided to put it down (I’m not sure why). The second attempt went up really slow, but nice and clean with no hitching. The most I’ve done prior to this was 456. The next set of 406 felt pretty light. I don’t usually mark down PRs, but I figured crossing a new 100lb mark and adding a plate to a lift merited a footnote.

Phill: I don’t use a belt either. I’ve tried it before and it just didn’t feel right.

Which would be better choice military press or overhead press ? Same question for lats pulldown. Pull to the front or pull to the back ?

Depends. Military press is done standing with feet together, so your stabilizers (read: core) get more work. OH press is a little more free form, but no leg drive allowed. Push press allows leg drive but no dipping and the jerk has a dip. Not impressed with behind the neck stuff, but I’m old and my shoulders don’t like it. May have uses in Oly lifting.

I prefer pullups rather than pulldowns. They’re harder and harder to cheat with. All the articles I’ve read recommend it and they further recommend doing them to the front to avoid shoulder problems. YMMV, ofcourse.

hey - I’m trying to build a cable row/pull-through setup off my cage. I have everything I need except some pulleys rated for 4-5 hundred pounds (I’m overengineering). Anybody have a source they know of I can order form online?

Thanks.

edit:
Never mind. Found some. Sorry to trouble.

I agree pull ups is better but the problem I find with the pull ups is that I can’t seem to increase the weight. How do you increase the weight for pull ups, short of carrying a weight between your legs which I find troublesome

which one do you train first abs or back ? I understand there is no hard and fast rule but in general I would like to find how most people do it

Well - I did put the weight between my legs at first. Until I could buy a dip belt. Even a length of chain and a carabiner will work for that. Course, you have to pad it a little…

Abs last for me. Otherwise they are too tired to stabilize on the heavy exercises…

Damn! I am already signed up for two comps in August, one on the 11th and the other on the 25th.

I don’t think scheduling will allow!

Give me some details though,
where?
events? etc

I am a tad small for the 231 class anyways I weigh right around 200 right now, must of the 231s are 240-250!

I would love to do a team comp though.
is it really on a Tuesday?

I HATE the belt on a standard DL, I get so damn low for the lift it just seems to get in the way. I like it for partail DL’s though 18", rack pulls, etc helps me ALOT. So I am guessing if I got used to it it would help.

Exercises I like the power belt on

farmers walk
yoke
squats
axle clean and press
partial deadlifts
probaly a couple more

don’t like it for

Stones
tire flip
log clean and press
deadlift from floor

Just seems to get in the way on these I will use my rehband back support though I love that thing.

Man thats sucks.

Its a team one LW and one HW so one has to be under the 231 one over but I hear you on the small for 231 but fuck it meat said size dont matter  Hell at this point im hardly pushing the 230+ class myself but working on that as we speak get back up to 250 or so +

Ill paste the info below looks brutal

Can the weight belt be used for adding weight while doing sits up of hanging leg raises ? Otherwise I was thinking that ankle weights might be a better investment.

teotjunk

Phill, no weight belt for me on anything. I had thought about using one on heavy squats, and I still might, but up to this point I haven’t felt the need.

Teotjunk,

I wouldn’t limit myself to picking ā€œthe bestā€ accessory movement. Set PR’s for Pullups and Chinups both. Same for DB Rows, Incline DB Rows, BOR’s, etc.

Fat Man pullups (inverted rows) are a nice alternative to BOR/T-Bar Rows. Set a bar up in a power cage at waist level and hang from it with the body in a plank position and pull your chest to the bar. It’s pretty much the opposite of a bench press so you should get some good carryover.

Try to cycle you acc. movements every few weeks and put movements that address your weakest links first.

6/30/07 ME Dead

Inspired by Modi I thought I’d pull a heavy dead today.

135 x 2
185 x 2
225 x 2
275 x 2
315 x 1
365 x 1 (chalk)
405 x 1
455 x 1
500 x 1 (95% of max)

I’ve only pulled something over 465 w/o a belt once, and even that was 485. 500 wasn’t a great pull but it wasn’t a grind either. I simply forgot to put the belt on after 465.

535 (PR attempt) x miss

NOTES: I made two mistakes in this session…

One, I know better than pull anything over 90% before attempting a PR. I can on the squat and bench but not this. Two, I didn’t belt-up. Double wammy.

After deadlifting, I did the second day of our SAQ program–forward and retro high speed treadmill hop ons. I got up to 11.5 mph retro before my form broke down and 15 mph forward.[/quote]

This is usually true for me too. Once I pull over 90%, I’m pretty much done for the day. That’s why my last warmup was 525 before I pulled 600. Like you, I can get away with it on bench and squat, but not deads.

Chalk…hmmf

Good news is that 500 felt easy…You’ll hit 535 next time, now that you know how to build up to it. Keep up the good work.
