Link to pictures, not all are of me, some damn good feats of strength today. Dane Kelly loaded the HW kegs, 200,250,300 in 15 seconds!! I don’t know if I could have run that fast between the kegs and barrels that quick!

Thanks, You have to just get out there, posting a bunch of zeros at the pro/am in Fresno in April really helped me for this one. I think I did pretty good today, I even got a plastic “bronze” metal to prove it! haha

Greta pics bro

OK got to scream it it wasnt a big load but Got Under a DAMN log tonight first time in near 3 months felt Odd but good progress baby LOL sorry for the highjack LOL

Thanks for the recap

Phill

Thnaks Phill, I took over 70 pics, and have more that will be devolped later. I got um up on my myspace, Myspace

I’ll throw them up on my google photos soon

I am not sure what I am going to do, I might look for some shows with 200lb divisons and try to quailfy for nats. Or just sit the rest of the season out and come back STRONG for 08. Not sure if I want to contiue to bulk to be in the 230s for 08. Or just stay at under 200 for now, I think I can get a whole lot stronger without gaining weight right now, I should really shed some fat to, not sure if I could do that right now without losing strength, I am not ready to go on a strict diet, I need to get a whole lot stronger first.
Id IMO stay for the class you are BUT I think you could safely go to 210-220 and cut for the contest get stronger etc. Just a thought. Your height etc I think you can make a good run at this 200 class and cut weight each time. But if you can keep conditioning and speed up by all means that extra weight and food will make you stronger

I have some choices to make for the next season as well get back to 240 or so and cut to the 231 or go balls out again for the 232-265 class highest ive been was 250 or so. right now Im getting stronger and sitting about 230 so well see.

I think thats a great idea Like log work for ME uopper etc Kegs etc as a second on squat day etc etc.
Not sure alot of thinking to do…

Next weekend I am going down to Venice Beach to see the super series Worlds Strongest man qualifer, should be fun, Marusiz, Kevin, Nee, Jesse Marunde, Brian Siders, etc will be there.

There is a show near here in August but only a LW/HW setup (231 under 232+) and I think it will be a bit heavy, if I don’t have other plans I will go watch though its only 2 1/2 hours away and I have family in the area.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings, lol
what ever you choose nice work bro keep it up

Phill

Event/conditioning June 9th

Oh boy pretty burnt from long day of labor shoveling hammering,. Demo etc prob should have just not trained but wanted to play with some toys no real goals just had a bit of fun. Like try a log for first time in 11 weeks, chain yoke for second time, etc. an ok session learned a few things

#1 tendon still very tight can get arm straight by forcing it but still picking things up man can feel that stretch need to consistently pick thing up and relax arm let that sucker stretch out, tried using it with tire just felt odd in a not good way but could use it about half way up so that?s progress. And well just keep progressing

#2 Belt on last hole and could stand to be tighter for the yoke, Um need to eat to get stronger/recover or get a new belt and be all svelte : )

#3 just need to get stronger was great to get under log again but have a lot of work to do to get back to even where I was just keep rollin

  1. Chain yoke walk Link #12
Wore belt whole time this time
    335 x 100ft x 2 with a u-turn No drops
    425 x 50ft x 2 runs no drops
    515 x 50ft x 2 runs No drops, progress!!! Called it here
60these went much better faster and just better Ill try the 600+ next time

3)Small Medley, 50 feet didn?t want to wake neighbors LOL it was pretty late

Farmers varied loads for good / bad arm makes a bit unbalanced and harder
1st run =190lbs / 80lbs
2nd run = 240lbs / 80lbs
This is most ive held in that hand sine surgery felt OK

400lb Tire flip one armed Little help with gimp arm not off bottom though
It was 8 or 9 flips

Would flip the tire run back the 50 grab the farmers and run it again didn?t time or anything just did it

  1. Log work just feeling it out, super setted with lat pull downs with both arms : ) and cable ab work
    Log = 115 x 10, 135 x 10, 165 x 5.

These felt Odd but good, I may add these or some BB OH press back On ME day had to be pretty strict tried some light pushing and could feel it on arm need to work that though Better form get load On chest/shoulders. Ill start back from this load and try and make progress. Sad thing is its not much higher then ive been doing with a DB in one hand ah well most ive had OH since the surgery

Short session just walked through it kind of nice to get under a log etc
Phill

KO421, nice photos, and great effort. Kinda sucks when they throw you a curveball by changing the event on the day of the comp.

As far as weight class goes, you could probably eat at maintenance levels, continue to train hard and get a nice little body comp shift. Stay around 200 but add a little muscle and lean out a bit. Otherwise, bump up the calories like Phill suggested, put on 10-15lbs and then cut for the next comp.

Anyways, it’s just good to see people getting out there and competing. That’s what it’s all about. Congrats on a great effort!

Do you train with the same guys at the same time every week? The reason I ask is that maybe you are on to something with your 9 day week…

What if you said screw the week and just tried a 9 day rotation for a while? Obviously not practical if it messes everyone else up, but if not, then why not?

Well, I require spotters for ME days. The rest of the stuff I can manage a way to “bail”. I’ll talk to Terry and see what he thinks about that. He might come to the gym on ME nights to help me out.

Lightbulb
The times he can’t help me out with ME work, I can just do ME floor presses. Hmmmm… The 9 day rotation may be a good idea. Plus, I could hit a little more volume on workout nights.

BTW, nice work on the tri and shoulder insanity. ;)
I kinda figured you might need the spot, but if there is a way to experiment with it, maybe it’s worth while.

I’m a little surprised that my shoulders aren’t even the least bit sore today. Either I have superhero like recovery abilities, OR tomorrow is going to suck!

KO421, great job, man. I agree, I think you should try to get stronger for your bodyweight while simply going for a shift in body composition. Take some of the junk out of the diet, put in some more good foods and be more competitive for your weight.

The pics are really cool, too. I like how there’s a county fair/circus in the background…makes me thinking of getting back to your roots with the old strongman shows at different fairs.

Thanks Modi, I think event changes the day of event is normal in strongman, it was a akward and HEAVY pull to, there was some damn good LW pullers only getting 4 or 5 reps, guys that can pull 600-700lbs off the floor, no flex in the bar makes it hard.

I have been eating at maintenance for the last couple months. I am right around 203lbs right now, I think I leaned out a bit. I think if I eat the same and add in more sled work, Medelys, condtioning, etc I can shed some lbs of fat. Also if I gain another 10lbs I doubt my belt will fit anymore, I just bought that thing in February!
haha

I agree on people should just compete, there are plenty of strong guys out there that just lift in the gym and never compete because they are afraid of having a bad performance and can’t keep their ego in check.

Thanks Matt

It I think that is the plan, it was a cool/odd setting. it was the redneck championships, they had all kinds odd events throughout the weekend, I didn’t get to check any out becuase I was busy competing.

We where setup right next to the toilet seat horseshoe course though! (you take a toilet seat and try to get it around a plunger handle.)

The Crowd was good and the strongman seemed to be getting a fair bit of most of the attention.

Good stuff Phill, good to see you getting under a log again/ using some two armed movements, those farmers must have been AKWARD!

I also agree with everything you said in your reply to me, I think I am going to stay around this weight and try to get stronger, shed some fat than try to get to around 210-215. That way I wouldn’t be at much of a disadvantage for the 231 class if I wanted to do one.

Yhea ive heard of them changing quite often all the entry’s have that Subject to change warning

they try and keep it but hey gotta be ready to roll I guess nicer work. Ive actually seen talk of having like 12-16 events as a pool for contests that are possibilities and you dont know the exact ones till the day of keep you guessing have to be all around ready Nutty shit

Thanks bro felt good to press something two handed and yes that farmers unbalance crap is kinda odd im going to have crazy obliques on the right side from always carrying heavy loads with the left only LOL

I think thats a hell of a good plan and you can always go Up later as you progress top out at this class.

OK sense I tore a bunch of skin off my right hand this weekend I have a couple of questions,

  1. How do I speed up the healing process? Ive been using neosporne.

  2. What are some exercises I can do? I figure 1 arm rows and pressing, squats, good mornings, etc. Any other advice?

Thanks
Kalle

Neosporin will keep it from getting infected, but it will also make for a slow healing. I know gymnasts often use epsom salt soaks after tearing calluses off. Painful, but hardens the skin pretty quickly.

A lot of people use Nu Skin (or New Skin I’ve seen it spelled both ways) to create an artificial layer. My trainer in college used to use super glue on deep cuts and such. It is apparently safe, and just as effective, and it will fall off on its own.

If it really effects your training, don’t be afraid of using machines, especially on pressing, for a few days while it heals. Pulling could be a bit tough, probably just going to have to suck it up or let it heal until you can pull anything heavy.

Neosporin will help prevent infection in the short term. I’d use “New Skin” to cover the wound ( Walgreens: Pharmacy, Health & Wellness, Photo & More for You ). Be particularly careful with your hand for the next few weeks in the gym. It will take awhile for the skin to get thick enough to handle abuse again.

Just wanted to say this is one of the only worthwhile threads left on T-Nation. No bs, just great advice and guys helping each other out and supporting each other.

I haven’t been posting, but just got back on the Westside template (since I’m not in-season at college anymore) and am probably gonna start posting my workouts on here. Might even post the workouts from this past week.

Hopefully this thread won’t go to shit with me posting it in now!

Thanks guys, I forgot about super glue, I’m going to go pick up some nu skin.

Just a heads up: “Nu Skin” is a beauty products company. “New-Skin” is the antiseptic superglue-like stuff.

along with the above and yes if you can super glue is AWESOME if yo have a flap you can glue in place .

Aloe can help, get vitamin E the kind you take orally gel caps, break them open and put on your skin

saftey squats hell regular squatting shouldnt be bad wear gloves for a bit if need be. Pulling use straps the kind that go on ankles etc and put around your wrist and Pull away I use a dog leash.

Buck up and take the pain LOL

Hope that helps
