Westside/PLing Training Thread

Modi and Phill,

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. Most weightlifters think I’m nuts for doing so much max effort work. Then again, they think anything outside of weightlifting specific work is useless. I suppose that’s why they’re snatching and clean and jerking the same weights they have been for years, while I get PR’s in both lifts on at least a monthly basis.

With regards to Wednesday’s explosive excercise, I would like to use an upper body movement in the interest of balance. However, I’m not a huge fan of dynamic bench or ballistic bench. Also, it’s very important that the lift isn’t too taxing as I clean and jerk immediately after.

I could do some kind of plyo push-up, but it would definately have to be for 5 reps or under. I don’t know, though. I kind of feel like I wouldn’t be getting much bang for my buck. I might just go with another jumping movement such as the broad jump.

Ballistic push ups are great pop out three reps stop. psuh as hard and high as you can.

Maybe burpies bro whole body sets of 3-5 EXPLOSIVE. also maybe push pressing, dymanic style get warm for your clean and jerk will again get the whole body kind of rolling. the light load you could clean it as well

I might lean to the burpie get he whole body rolling add is the push up to them in the bottom

Once again I woke up on Saturday morning and just felt good. I decided not to make it another ME day, and just go 100% on intensity.

Bench felt super fast, probably could have bumped this up, but I just felt like ripping through these sets.

Close grip for 18 reps was brutal, this was a 3 rep PR, and the 19th rep sat on my chest for about 30 seconds before I pressed it, so I didn’t count it in the set!

I haven’t hit DB shoulders heavy since December, and it felt good today. 5th rep went up 3/4 of the way and stalled for a good 4-5 seconds. I felt myself turning it into an incline DB Press, so I spent about as much energy trying to press it as I did trying not to cheat. Great grind though. I have not problem with failure on a rep set.

OH Tri’s felt strong as well. Wish I had something heavier than 100’s today (not always the case)

I’ve been giving the BOI guys shit about my shoulder combo, which I haven’t done myself since December, so I figured it was time to put up or shut up. This sequence is pure torture after chest and shoulders. No rest during the superset and only 60sec between supersets. If you are angry at your shoulders and want to punish them, give it a try.

6/9/07 ME Lower and stuff

I trained with a friend of mine. I knew we were going to do a full body workout, so I came in early to hit a heavy squat before he came in. Oh yeah, and bodyweight got down to 225 yesterday afternoon. Happy times.

A)ME Squat
Bar x 8
135 x 5
185 x 3
225 x 3
275 x 3
315 x 1
365 x 1
385 x 1
405 x 1
415 x 1 (95% of current PR)

Last one was a grinder. I can tell I haven’t taken a heavy squat for 2 or 3 weeks. Hip mobility is good, and actually I’m more stable than ever walking the weight out. Just don’t feel as strong out of the hole.

B)Hanging Knee Raise w/ DB between Ankles=20 x 15 x 3

C)Weighted Pullup=BW + 25 x 4 x 7

D)Elevated Pistol/Single Leg Squst=8 x 3

E)Blast-Strap Pushups w/ feet elevated=20 x 3

F)Pullups=BW x 15 (PR, especially after the weighted pullups earlier)

G)Natural G/H Raises=6 x 2

NOTES: I’ll probably train Sunday and Monday morning before taking 5 days off for a camping/fishing trip with my buddies.

Holy PR day, nice job 4est!

Do you train with the same guys at the same time every week? The reason I ask is that maybe you are on to something with your 9 day week…

What if you said screw the week and just tried a 9 day rotation for a while? Obviously not practical if it messes everyone else up, but if not, then why not?

Well, I require spotters for ME days. The rest of the stuff I can manage a way to “bail”. I’ll talk to Terry and see what he thinks about that. He might come to the gym on ME nights to help me out.

Lightbulb
The times he can’t help me out with ME work, I can just do ME floor presses. Hmmmm… The 9 day rotation may be a good idea. Plus, I could hit a little more volume on workout nights.

BTW, nice work on the tri and shoulder insanity.

Yes ive done this type of thing with great success every one gets stuck on seven days . you can make a training week as many or few days as you want. Might be worth a try

Great work again

Phill

Nothing like spends a saturday shoveling, standing in and at times even sitting in your own shit. knocking holes in walls and foundations with quickie saws and jack hammers and such, But making great progress on the bathroom.

Wont need any conditioning event work today with all this may try and play with the log and yoke later and tire a bit if I feel up to it

SATURDAY - 06/09/07

Clean and Jerk:
50kg x 3
60kg x 2
70kg x 1
70kg x 1
-Too slow for DE work.
60kg x 1
60kg x 1
60kg x 1
60kg x 1
60kg x 1
60kg x 1

Bench:
BAR x 3
95lbs x 3
135lbs x 3
185lbs x 3
205lbs x 1
215lbs x 1
235lbs x MISS

  • I felt weak tonight so, naturally, I went for a 10lb PR. Close but just a little too weak off the chest.

Pin Press:
165lbs x 5
165lbs x 5
165lbs x 5
175lbs x 4
175lbs x 3

  • Gotta’ get stronger with these. Right off the chest is my sticking point.

Push Press:
115lbs x 8
115lbs x 8
115lbs x 8

Towel Pull-up:
BW x 8
BW x 8
BW x 5

  • These were not the typical 1" ROM pull-ups you see in most gyms. Full stretch in bottom and chin above bar at top.

Rope Pushdown:
120lbs x 8
130lbs x 8
130lbs x 8

I think I need to work on my bench technique. Sometimes I feel very inconsistent, even rep to rep, and it’s definately technical.

welp its done I am tired and my hands are bloody so it was a good day, lol

Well 4 people showed up in my class

first event Medely farmers walk 100ft (240per hand) followed by tire flip 700lb 5 flips

I got 21’ 7" I think, deff a PR good enough for 2nd in my class, winner completed the farmers with no flips of the tire.

2nd event 12" log 220lbs for reps

PR is 195 so I was gonna give it a shot

the two people that went before me didn’t get it so I didn’t have much pressure

clean went easy! so thats a pr for sure, got a little drive the log actually got it to about my head, triceps ain’t up to par yet though, no press
Ended up cleaning it 3 times, 0 points still in 2nd by 1 point Winner came and did 1 rep and walked away for the win, I was the closest to lockout out of the other 3 but a zero is still a zero.

3rd event axle deadlift, this was supposed to be 450lbs from 18" they ended up using 500lbs from about 14-15" id say, the diffrence between 15" and 18" is HUGE for me cause from 18" I can hook my knees under the bar and ramp the shit out of the bar.

well this was a HEAVY pull none of the 200lbers got it, the one guy said he was a 500lb puller from the floor … the Apollons axle has NO flex in the bar, NONE I need to get one to train with, WAY diffrent than my axle.

4th event semi truck pull 60ft
I got it in 28seconds, was setup wrong at the start and my stubby legs can only move so fast! got 3rd overall.

Winner got it in 24.2 I think for his 3rd event win, 2nd was 24.7 or so.

droped a point to move into a tie for 2nd

5th and last event keg load. 3 kegs loaded onto 55 gallon race fuel drums 200lb keg set at 30ft away 250lb set at 20ft away 275 set at 10ft away

Guy tied with me went and dug deep and put the pressure on me by getting all 3 kegs in 45 seconds or so.

Two weeks before I couldn’t even lift the 250lb keg up so was a little nervous.

went ripped the 200 right off the ground, moving pretty quick with it, went for the 250, picked it right up fairly easy, loaded it, at this point I think I was faster than the other guy, went to pick the 275, got it part of the way but my grip slipped trying to set it into my lap and past my knee, tore my callouses, couldn’t regroup after that, almost puked… ended up with 2 kegs in I don’t know how long and finished 3rd overall missing out on a trip to nationals by 1 point :frowning:

I really wish I would have got a lift in the log or the axle, as that would have been good for atleast 3 or 4 points where others got zero and would have put me in the drivers seat.

Oh well all lifts where PRs pretty much so I am happy overall but it is kind of bittersweet.

Thanks for the input, Phill. It’s funny, this doesn’t really feel like a ton of volume to me. I guess I handle it well.

You’re right about the rep PR. I should have gone for 205 for 3 but I can be stubborn sometimes. Next time I’m feeling a bit week I’ll go for a rep PR.

I’ll start incorporating the pause work. Thanks for the tip.

Thnaks Phill, I took over 70 pics, and have more that will be devolped later. I got um up on my myspace, Myspace

I’ll throw them up on my google photos soon

I am not sure what I am going to do, I might look for some shows with 200lb divisons and try to quailfy for nats. Or just sit the rest of the season out and come back STRONG for 08. Not sure if I want to contiue to bulk to be in the 230s for 08. Or just stay at under 200 for now, I think I can get a whole lot stronger without gaining weight right now, I should really shed some fat to, not sure if I could do that right now without losing strength, I am not ready to go on a strict diet, I need to get a whole lot stronger first.

Maybe just add in some sled pulls, tire flips throughout the week.

I also plan on changing my training around and focuing on events more than anything, not just on the weekend, priortize them in the workouts and than do squats, etc as acc work mainly, still go for some ME though.

Not sure alot of thinking to do…

Next weekend I am going down to Venice Beach to see the super series Worlds Strongest man qualifer, should be fun, Marusiz, Kevin, Nee, Jesse Marunde, Brian Siders, etc will be there.

There is a show near here in August but only a LW/HW setup (231 under 232+) and I think it will be a bit heavy, if I don’t have other plans I will go watch though its only 2 1/2 hours away and I have family in the area.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings, lol
