I figured I jump on the rant bandwagon and go ahead and throw one down.
I have a pretty bad case of insomnia. It usually goes anywhere from 24-48 hours of zero sleep followed by 4-6 hours of solid sleep when I do finally get some. The only saving grace in my week is saturdays. Saturdays are pure glory. I will stay up till 7 or 8 in the morning and then pass the heck out.
Last night I was going about my usual routine and fell asleep a little earlier than normal (probably around 6) and was going to town on some REM cycles. I mean I was doing serious work on them. 815 rolls around and my roommate comes into my room and knocks on my door just to see if I was awake. What the freaking heck?
Luckily, I am able to pass out again but not an hour later he comes in and starts talking noise to me about me cooking him breakfast and whether or not I wanted some of the breakfast I would cook him.
Damnit NO I DO NOT WANT TO COOK YOU BREAKFAST I’M TRYING TO SLEEP SO I DONT FAIL THE FINALS I HAVE TO TAKE IN T-MINUS 48 HOURS.
So here I am, a little bit on the pissed side, with under 4 hours of sleep in me, and I cant fall asleep. Screw this.
Cliff notes:
-I have insomnia
-I fell asleep at 6 am this morning
-Roommate came in at 9 telling me to make him breakfast with my food
-I’m going to destroy something for my sleep getting messed up.
There is obviously only one option: kill your roommate.
I know nothing about insomnia but Magnesium helps me sleep .
Why are you this guy’s bitch?

Malatonin has helped quite a bit. I do not like to take it that often though, I sleep through alarms and sleepwalk when I take it.
Have you tried tryptophan on an empty stomach?

Heck no. I made it VERY clear that this crap is never going to happen again. If you mess with my sleep schedule you call down freaking thunder.

What I mean is, how did it even come to the point that he could the idea that you would make his breakfast?

This is a definite possibility right now. Or murder his parents and cook them into a vat of chili, which I promptly serve to him in front of his favorite band.

It is a chemical present in certain foods. Turkey contains a high amount of it, so maybe have that as part of your last meal before sleep.

I really have no clue. I have never expressed any interest in cooking for him (we all take care of our own meals) and since it is my house I have made it known that I am the Alpha Male in this neck of the woods. He is a very odd guy though, not sure where he comes up with most of his ideas though

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid found in poultry, eggs, fish, etc… It is a precursor for serotonin. It is more effective taken on an empty stomach.
From Wikipedia:
Use as a dietary supplement
For some time, tryptophan has been available in health food stores as a dietary supplement. Many people found tryptophan to be a safe and reasonably effective sleep aid, probably due to its ability to increase brain levels of serotonin (a calming neurotransmitter when present in moderate levels)[18] and/or melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness or low light levels).[19][20] Some users of MDMA (street name “ecstasy”) will eat tryptophan-containing foods to shorten the ‘come down’ effect of having lower levels of serotonin than usual (due to an extra large release caused by the drug).
Clinical research has shown mixed results with respect to tryptophan’s effectiveness as a sleep aid, especially in normal patients.[21][22][23] Furthermore tryptophan has shown some effectiveness for treatment of a variety of other conditions typically associated with low serotonin levels in the brain[24] such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder[25] and seasonal affective disorder.[26][27] In particular, tryptophan has shown considerable promise as an antidepressant alone[28] and as an “augmenter” of antidepressant drugs.[28][29] However, the reliability of these clinical trials has been questioned.[30][31]

Well I pop a couple mg’s of melatonin every few days to knock me out, and it said it increases melatonin levels. Would that not be circuitous way to raise melatonin when I’m already taking some? (Legitimate question, not me being a d-bag)

I laughed at that episode. Like alot. This season has turned out pretty well I would say
You should foam roll your roomate. He probably has some trigger points that need to be tended to.
And by foam roll I mean beat with a bat. And by trigger points I mean vital areas.
You don’t have insomnia you’re just on a shittly sleeping schedule. Either go to sleep earlier, and exert force so you so tired u have to sleep at normal time, or stay up all through the next day. Take the sleep aids, (only half for me), to help your self sleep on time, then get like five alarm clocks. It should work.

Just on a shittly sleeping schedule? Really? You dont think that after 48 hours of no sleep I am not tired and tried to get to sleep around hour 15?

A similar thing happened to me not too long ago. It started when i tried to reset my sleep schedule to an earlier time since I had been sleeping till like 2 or three in the afternoon.
I purposefully woke up early, was dog tired throughout the day, just waiting to go to sleep, then when nightime hit and i tried to get to bed at like a normal time, all of a sudden i was unable to sleep and wide awake. So for like a month I ended up staying awake for like 30-40 hours at a time and sleeping like 5-6 hours. It eventually stopped and i started waking up a little earlier like at around 9 or 10 usually, but then I stayed out too late once and now I’m back to fucking sleeping till three again. dammit.
Trying to exhaust yourself throughout the day doesn’t really work either. I remember swimming, running, hitting my bag, lifting twice in one day, and doing manual labor to try and make myself tired but no luck. I even tried reading a boring book to exhaust my brain but that didnt seem to help either.
Good luck with this problem, it fucking sucks.
