Well looking back, I started 26 days ago. Yesterday ended Week 4 according to the app. So I finished just slightly ahead of schedule, nothing major. I figure that following such a program requires following the frequency as well, otherwise I will get less out of it. But looking ahead at what app lady has in store for me…meh, I dunno.
I’m definitely not following the frequency, but I knew I wouldn’t heading into this. It seems to be doing roughly what I expected though, so that’s promising.
And -10 windchill can definitely go get fucked. It’s been pretty cold here too and I’ve been thinking on every run how much more fun this is going to be running in the summer without the cold hitting the back of my throat and my hands going numb.
Yeah, the weather does not make it fun. There is only so much all this spandex can do to keep the chill away.
I’m interested in how the spandex keeps your mouth and hands warm?
Due to Covid exposure risk, I run with 7 face masks. For the hands, I just keep them down the front of my pants like a normal person.
Lockdown Day 65. Still no abs.
Shoulder day. Started out by repping some HSPUs, for a disappointing 15. Which then of course made everything else feel heavy as shit, but I know what I’ve signed up for here. At this point I doubt I could press 75.

Lockdown Day 66. Still no abs.
Just a Bob day today. Weather too crappy for a run. Also considering stopping the program and just running a bit more intuitively, still undecided.
If you’re following the same progression as me, you’ll soon find yourself at the point where at least 1 run a week is just a “run for X minutes, job done” kind of thing. Plus I’m a sucker for completeness.
Yeah, that seems to come right near the end, which makes sense. I guess what I am saying is I am not sure yet that I want to just “go run for 20 minutes” or whatever. I don’t ultimately give a rip about running 5k, much less for time. Or do I? Ugh.
Partly I am annoyed that my calves seem to dislike the constant pavement pounding, takes me too many days to recover.
Think of it this way: what would you consider “fit” and what would a “fit” person do? Could/would they run for 20 minutes?
I also find my brain telling me this: “I would like to be able to do _____. That means I need to train in a way that I can do ______, but it doesn’t mean I actually have to do ______.”
How so? The treadmill has been making my calves sore in the wrong place - the portion between the pretty muscle and my achilles tendon. I think it might be the soleus. Either way, the one season I ran cross country did this to me. The end result was that I was slow when I sprinted and my vertical dropped about 5". That’s not exactly the goal here…
You will do when I do.
But in all seriousness, I don’t really know because I don’t know what your goal is. I actually do want to be able to run a 5K.
Doesn’t beating up Bob also count as cardio?
Well, right now some of that is the aesthetic part and some weight loss, and in my case also both my resting heart rate and my blood pressure. On these last two, I am already at a point where I am way ahead of whatever the averages are for my age group after just 11 runs. Beyond that, I had ideas of being able to do Wendler’s 1 mile run in 7 and a half minutes or whatever. I expect I am probably already close to that one, just not sure I go through the actual torture part of executing it. I guess I am sorta close to what I set out to do.
I am just waiting to see your time, and then will do it 10 seconds faster or something.
Yeah, but a different kind. It is good for short bursts of high output, plus just good if you want to learn how to git gud at hitting and kicking stuff. Running is a totally different animal.
true…
But, the “find the loopholes” part of me looks at the exercise guidelines and finds no indication that running is mandatory ![]()
They’re probably both useful in their own way though.
Don’t get me wrong, I also do not think it is mandatory. I just think my own cardio capacity is/was not where it should be. Running is a fast way to fix that. Once I am happy with it, I can do it far less frequently and do other things, including the kickboxing. I am just going for improved athleticism in general, I guess.
Have you ever timed your mile? If you can just grit it out for just a mile and nothing more you should be able to do 7 minutes no problem
Last time I timed it was probably a decade ago, for the express purpose of doing a 7 minute mile…and I believe I succeeded, cannot remember for certain. It sucked a lot. I am probably in slightly better cardio shape now, so I might be able to do it again. I don’t really feel compelled to actually do it, it’s more about having the capability, if that makes any sense at all.
I also remember back in my Army days of scoring max points on my two mile run at 11:41. I will never forget what that felt like, holy shitballs.
Meant to get around to this bit as well.
I want to say it is more in the gastrocnemius, but I will have to pay more attention. It does not bother me at all once I am warmed up and running, it is more afterwards and the following couple of days.
My gut tells me it is a combination of not having done much high-impact training on my calves combined with suddenly subjecting them to pounding concrete for the first time in decades…while also being in a pretty big calorie deficit and not exactly focusing on recovery nutrition. It feels nothing like injury related pain, and more like muscles that are stubbornly not recovering because their host is a retard.
