I’m wanting to wear a light pack to the gym, just 5 or 10kg to start with but worried about causing issues with my back. I get (normally) mild lower back pain frequently which normally fades during the night, this is often caused by wearing a normal small backpack (not a heavy duty rucksack) during work hours.
Is a vest likely to be easier on my back than the backpack?
I’m seeing somethings saying a vest is worse and some saying the opposite, is it down to the style/make of vest?
Vest 100%, especially if you get the plate carrier (or tactical )style distributes the weight really well around your body. Backpack can be fine, but everything is already further from your body and if your doing any movements with it, will put more strain and awkward pull on you then a well fitting vest

Thanks @Robi
I bought a cheap (around £40GBP) vest yesterday. It’s only to 10k so I thought wouldn’t be much good but after trying it fully loaded I was surprised how it felt so just wearing at 5kg for now.
It has small sand bags that you can distribute around so easy to place comfortably. If I do use this I will definitely buy a better plate loaded model soon.
Thanks again.
