Waist to Weight Ratio

Well, I was wrong I think, sorry guys. The good news is that I’m probably leaner than I was thinking then

I think Pro-agression likes to give blow jobs to alot of members on this site haha

I agree in some ways, but I for one am just not up to putting pics of me where I think I look like shit - what would be the purpose of that? Unless I was specifically asking “Hey guys should I bulk or cut?” or if someone called me out. I know myself that I need to cut/recomp so there is no real point in asking a question like that, and I would never knowingly attack (if ever) someone who has made more progress than me, that would be stupid.

I’ve gained about 45-50lbs since I started (feb 09) and I was at the “should I cut first?” point when I STARTED so as you can imagine, I am pretty high bodyfat right now… I just don’t see the point of putting pics up, I’ll put some up when I have given it real time and made decent progress. It’s not like I’m totally against it and I like that others do, but I just don’t see the point in doing it for the sake of doing it. Posting pics is equivalent imo to “hey look at how great I look” unless there is a specific purpose - by that I mean that’s how I would feel doing it, there are very very few people on here who actually do come accross that way.

Oh optheta, wanna come back to my house?

OR - whether its over the internet or not. i respect the way that some of the members act, telling it how it is, not taking crap from retards that fuck up the boards and theyve got a no nonsense attitude when it comes to progress – if somethings wrong, fix it, if it aint, dont.

Nothing gay about that, is there?

I felt/feel exactly the same…I’ve just given in to the pressure lol (put my pics up last night). I don’t feel nearly “finished” yet (still some bulking and trimming left to do), and I don’t feel that I’m ready to show off or anything…it’s just that people keep on demanding pictures so that they can masturb…eh, I mean, check over to see if a person knows what they are talking about.

Also, I don’t think it’s fair to compare one guys picture over another. Considering that genetics/drugs are a big factor. For example, I had to start off weighing around 130lbs at 6ft tall! Most guys of average height only have to build up from 150-180lbs and they hit the 200lbs mark in just a year or two. In other words, how much a person has progressed is more important than anything else.

Agreed. Also you look pretty damn lean to me man, I probably wouldn’t be so concerned with trimming right now if I were you. I’ll be honest, when I saw that it was you (“its_just_me”) I was pretty surprised, I think it’s a good job you put pics up.

I was 6 foot and 135 lbs at 18 years old. Another big factor over genetics and drugs is determination and consistency.

Definately man, the pics just provide some sort of reference point. I put mine up just to gauge progress. Im reasonably proud of where i started but definately am looking to gain another 50-60lbs at least before i cut for competition. Maybe get to 250lbs would be nice. Hahaha in 3 years. Hopefully not with too much weight on me.

Its_just_me - really it is funny how u judge someone. from first thought i thought u were a cunt. But some of the things uve said lately have shown me your not  sorry for the pre-judging and well done on your progress man, definately made more than me, but it only pushes me harder. Like bubaganoosh said – definately worth putting your pic up, even tho you dont feel ‘finished’ (nobody ever will), you show ur level of committment to the mission XD good luck

Thanks! Not worrying about getting “ripped” just now, just want to keep “damage control” in check while bulking (this means that I will be able to bulk for longer). For me, I can bulk while still being relatively lean (10-12% bf). Obviously, if it meant breaking past that percentage in order to keep bulking well above 200lbs (like up to 250lbs), then so be it.

So you understand what it’s like too then lol. Yeah, funny thing is, I never consider determination and consistency as factors, simply because I often falsely assume that everyone has that.

I’ll add my two cents on this thread. When I was a skinny bastard, I think my waist got down to near 30" at a weight of 175 lbs at 6’1". I was lean as hell but had no muscle to speak of. Over the last 8 or 9 years, I’ve put on an appreciable amount of mass.

I’m about 3 months into my leaning out phase and my waist is currently measuring at 35" in the morning. I’m weighing in at about 222 lbs. You can almost see all 6 of my abs. I’m guessing at most I might get down to 33" or 33.5" if I got super lean.

So that’s a minimum of 3 inches gained around my core over the last 8 or 9 years but I’m also a lot bigger. So I wanted to echo what some other posters have already said on this thread.

If you are looking to gain an appreciable amount of mass, the chances are very high that your core will thicken up considerably as a result. I have absolutely no problem with this since I think I look a lot better now because the rest of my muscles are in proportion to the waist size gain.

Anyone trying to do bodyfat calculations by the waist size gain alone are missing the boat. If you are lifting heavy and hard, doing a lot of deadlifts, squats, etc., your waist size will increase!

I think there are a couple of freaky professional bodybuilders out there that are huge and have small waists. I don’t know how they do it. Some serious genetics I guess.

This is a good point, not all the increase in waist size is due to fat.
I think my abs are just as visible now with a bigger waist line, probably just because they are thicker. I can see my obliques now, before I wasn’t sure if I had any, I also get comments on my lower back thickness when I’m deadlifting. All of those will contribute a bit too your waist line.

I was thinking you were more an intermediate lifter than a beginner, but it’s cool that you you put a picture of yourself.

Has anyone mentioned abdominal development?

If you’re working your abs, they should be growing, just like any muscle, and that will increase the size of your waist.

If you have slim shoulders, a small chest, and are doing lots of weighted ab work, you could end up looking pretty boxy.

I’ve gained a little over two inches on my waist with about thirty pounds, I’ve lost some leanness, but my highly-scientific “pinch test” tells me that I haven’t actually gained much, if any, abdominal fat… I have just gotten thicker.

Spartiates, I am honestly stunned that this hasn’t been covered in much detail. Someone who is 5’10-6’ and starting out in the 160-180 range and has never really lifted heavily or been into sports that demanded it, is not going to have much of a muscular core. I imagine on the journey from 160-200lb, assuming you are doing squats and deadlifts, you are in the process going to sustain significant increases in size and strength of the abdominals and obliques. Simply due to actually developing a strong enough core.

Continuing on that speculation, I’d also imagine that waist size increases for a given amount of increase in lean mass would probably trend downward above a certain weight.

True, there’s also the erector muscles in the lower back which adds size to the midsection.

Some people probably underestimate the potential size increase of the core

True to a certain extent. Although, it has been said that the fatter you get, the more fat compared to muscle you tend to add (it’s easier to become fatter). This could be linked in to insulin response which may be effected by bulking.

I should have been a bit more clear. What I was getting at indirectly is that a lot of the ‘waist size gain’ from adding more mass is probably a good thing. A lot of men at a lighter weight almost have an ‘hourglass’ instead of a v-taper because they have so little abdominal and oblique mass. That is not a particularly good look and in that case the extra inches in the midsection actually make you more pleasing to the eye.

And as for the waist size increase decreasing as you got above a certain weight, I meant in a relatively lean state. Honestly you really shouldn’t be putting on enough fat when you bulk to drastically affect your insulin response. And it should be more than offset by the muscle gains. Or you’re doing it wrong.
