I’ve been getting into dramas lately, with a bent toward “overcoming” types. Many have been listed: Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, The Patriot (fairly new). There’s a few that are kind of obscure: The Mighty, Pre (story of Steve Prefontaine), Simon Birch, The Client.
It’s good to see my favorite movie, “Apocalypse Now” made a few lists. I’ve seen the movie at least two dozen times and it just keeps getting better. FYI, the movie is based on a short story called “Heart of Darkness” that I read in college. It’s basically about the colonial experience in the Belgian Congo. It’s a great movie with a lot of depth.
The Fisher king. Closetland. Cool Hand Luke. Demolition Man.
“Kelly’s Heroes”, “Soldier”, “Heartbreak Ridge”, and “Pale Rider”. And it’s no mistake that Clint Eastwood is in three of those. That guy has more screen presence than any prettyboy media darling in Hollywood today. A T-Man if there ever was one.
Good God! I thought “Soldier” was one of the most lame movies of all time. I thought Kurt Russel could have commanded a better script, but then again, he took the job. The concept could have been done much better I thought. Any way, here’s a couple more of my picks: October Sky, The Hunt for Red October, Without Limits (another Steve Prefontaine movie), Falling Down, Black Dog, The Further Adventures of Tennessee Buck (pretty lame movie, but has what must be the finest 30 seconds of film with Kathy Shower), Juhnny Mnemonic. I’m sure I’ll think of others.
Oldies but goodies…you can’t go wrong with any of the pink panther movies with peter sellers. Blazing saddles is great fun too.
I’d like to add Stargate with Kurt Russell to the list. Escape from New York is also worth seeing.
Pitch Black (don’t know if it’s quite 2 years old yet), Blade Runner, Dark City, Indiana Jones trilogy (if you haven’t seen them).
here we go-comedy-you got dumb and dumber and kingpin. drama-rain man and goodfellas, action-fight club and the program.
horror-exorcist.
those are all older than 2 years old
Slap Shot. Great T-Man movie for the hockey fan.
T-Teen, your choices are outstanding, with one gross exception. “Basic Instinct” is absolutely vile and pretentious. I cannot believe that the guy who brought us the wonderfully prophetic & cynical “Robocop” (Paul Verhoeven) would later crank out such stool as Basic Instinct and Showgirls. Whatever. Shows you the power $$ has in clouding judgement. If you are into sweaty sexually charged thrillers might I suggest Body Heat, Dressed to Kill or Blood Simple? Less sex/ more mood? Check out “The Conversation” by Coppola (classic example of the “silent” films of the '70’s)
Also, speaking of films that are 30 years ahead of their time don’t forget about Midnight Cowboy!
FYI- check the “The Others” with Nicole Kidman. Beautifully restrained thriller.
For those who liked the bruce lee movies…you should check out the movies called Once Upon A Time In China Parts 1-4 which feature Jet Li. Also, the best Jackie Chan films were those made by him before he went to Hollywood (containing plenty of stunts, kung fu and humour)…which include Drunken Master and Supercop. Other favourites include Stand By Me (adopted from the Stephen King novella), The Sixth Sense, Austin Powers, Dances With Wolves, Face/Off, Crocodile Dundee, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Coming To America, The Mask, Con Air, Wall Street and The Shawshank Redemption. On a side note, Shrek is the funniest movie i’ve seen this year.
How ya doing Ogie? Buy ya soda after da game!..Glad to
see a few others love "Slap Shot"as I do !!!..(Joey Z. ::::----:::![]()
P.S. no one mentioned “Strange Brew” you HOSERS !!!
Ah yes, Shawshank Redemption and Jerry Maguire. two of my all time fave’s.
I second the strange brew nomination, but I think this one might be funnier if you live somewhere close to our neighbors to the north (or south, from Detroit). Or at least you should like beer. REALLY like beer!
Tremors, Army of Darkness, Red Dawn. High T movies, all. Just see them!
Oops…forgot Devil’s Advocate with Al Pacino…it’s one of the reasons i chose to do alaw degree.

Okay, so you slammed “Soldier” but included “Johnny Mnemonic”?!? Dude, you been in my pain meds while my back was turned? OOUCH! Allright, no more laughing for Mr. Dick today. I gotta go lay down and not think about the grinding that’s going on in my chest. Take care.
A triple hit of recent mob movies: Goodfellas, Casino, and Donnie Brasco.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned ‘Raging Bull’ yet. LaMotta was a great fighter but a real maniac and DeNiro plays him perfectly. Even gained an extra 20 - 30 pounds to look the part of an aging LaMotta.
