Anyone recommend any good movies at least 2 years old? (not necessarily training related). I get free rentals on these older movies and I spend a lot of time looking thru the shelves for little gain.

Well, here’s my bakers dozen; it’s just my opinion:
(1.) Forest Gump (2.)The Matrix (3.) Rain Man (4.) Slap Shot
(5.) The Crow (6.) The Usual Suspects (7.) Predator
(8.) Enemy of the State(9.) Contact (10.) Heaven Can Wait
(11.) Hollywood Knights (12.) The Final Countdown (13.) Mr. Destiny
(I would rate all these as 10’s and probably in that order.)

djf: Since we all have different taste, that’s a hard one; but I’ll get you started from my personal list:(In no particular order) “The GodFather Trilogy”; “The Good Luck Club”; “St. Elmo’s Fire”; “Raising Arizona”; “Young Guns 1&2”; “Full Matal Jacket”; “Alien”; “Aliens”; “First Knight”; “Legends Of The Fall”; “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc”; “Saving Private Ryan”; “Girl Interrupted”;(may not be 2 years old though); “Fargo”; “The Green Mile”; “Gone With The Wind”; “Glory”; “The Princess Bride”; Any Musical From the Fifties (“An American In Paris”; “Singing In the Rain”; “Showboat”; “Anchor’s Aweigh”; “State Fair”; “Easter Parade”, etc.); “Sabrina”; “2001: A Space Odessey” (hard to believe it was made in 1968!); “Platoon”; “The Lion King” (of course!); Any movie with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland; “The Terminator”; “Beetlejuice”; “Blade Runner”; “The Day The Earth Stood Still”; “Jurassic Park”. This list could go on forever; but it’s a start. ENJOY!

Got some aggreement here with Joey Z! Definitely add “Predator”, “Enemy Of The State” and “Contact”.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm…I know movies. What else do you expect from someone who studies filmmaking and scriptwriting, not to mention film history? Well, I’ll name a few classics you should watch again: The Godfather (mafia epic), Goodfellas (mafia), Schindler’s List (modern historical epic), Doctor Zhivago (classic historical epic), Gone With The Wind (American epic), Chinatown (detective/mystery), Apocalypse Now (classic war), Platoon (modern war), Taxi Driver (classic psychological), The Silence of the Lambs (modern psychological), The Graduate (classic romantic comedy), When Harry Met Sally (modern romantic comedy), Fatal Attraction (classic romantic thriller), Basic Instinct (modern romantic thriller), Tootsie (classic comedy), Mrs. Doubtfire (modern comedy), Psycho (classic suspense), The Sixth Sense (modern suspense), E.T. (family), The Exorcist (religious horror), Alien (sci-fi horror), The Shining (horror), Star Wars (sci-fi action), 2001: A Space Odyssey (sci-fi), Double Indemnity (film noir), West Side Story (classic musical), Grease (musical), The Searchers (classic western), Unforgiven (modern western), Terminator 2:Judgement Day (modern action), The French Connection (classic action). All of the movies above are classic; for some movies I specifically put the word classic in front of the genre only to distinguish its age from another movie. If you want a movie with exceptional filmmaking try Citizen Kane. If you want a movie with exceptional acting try A Streetcar Named Desire. If you want more modern movies, let me know.

My favorite movies, both over 2 years old, are “The Big Lebowski” and “Bottle Rocket”. I’d highly recommend them if you haven’t seen them.

I agree with Mufasa on these, and can’t believe I forgot them: The Green
Mile, The Terminator, Beetlejuice. And would like to add: Total Recall,
The Great Escape, Field of Dreams, The Natural, Bull Durham, The Sting,
To Kill a Mockingbird, Being There, Ghost, Ghostbusters, Animal House,
Caddyshack, Stripes, Oh, God Books (1&2), Back to the Future (the trilogy),
Caccoon (1&2), Patch Adms and What Dreams May Come…That’s
still just a partial list. Would be very interesting to find out what the
girls would like to see!

theres always the naked guns, dumb and dumber and night at the roxbury.

My tastes usually are the surreal eye candy that confuses the sense: Naked Lunch, The Big Lebowski, Shogun Assassin, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Barfly, Mean Streets & Red Rock West. A great new one is Oh, Brother, Where Art Though?

The Program.
That is all

T-Teen: I LOVE movies! Gotta question. The concept of “2001-A Space Odessesy” BEGAN in 1964. It was completed in 1968. What is amazing is that Sci-Fi films AFTER “2001” seem more dated than it is! (Look at the computer graphics of “2001” and compare them to “Alien”; “2001” graphics look more modern than even today, and in “Alien” the grapics look like bad 880’s and PC’s). Why do you think this film stays so “modern” in it’s look despite the fact that it is over 30 years old? The genius of Kubrick?

One I have never seen mentioned around here and I believe to be one of the best gangster/mafia flick ever is:

“Miller’s Crossing”

It is a Coen brothers film, probably they’re best(well…almost better than Raising Arizona!). RENT IT!!!
Actually as a matter of fact rent any and all Coen brothers films: Barton Fink, Blood Simple, etc.

dman: I think that sometimes when we make these list, we forget just pure, silly, escapist entertainment. I would add to your list “Fast Times At Ridgemont High”, “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” and “Clueless”…(“American Pie” would fit this list too…)

Mufasa, glad you like movies, T-Bro!!! I love studying them because they involve so much talent and hard work and they are the most powerful medium in the world. Their ability to transport people to different worlds or replicate history or elicit emotions is simply magical! About 2001: A Space Odyssey, I have been wondering that myself! There must be many reasons why, but I do believe the greatest reason has to do with the genius of Stanley Kubrick. Just the fact that most people don’t appreciate his movies show how great he was (the level of the movies are way too high for the majority of minds, although some intelligent people could dislike his movies if it isn’t his or taste)! He definately created Art-infested movies! Many people call him weird and some people like to look at him as…a bit…freaky. But considering Mozart, Einstein, Picasso, Ghandi, and most of the many other great minds in history were also looked as different, weird and freaky is an unintended compliment in this case!!! Out of curiousity, what is your all-time favorite movie, Mufasa?

Well most of my recc’s have been covered already, but here’s a few that I don’t think have been brought up. Easy Rider (what T-Man wouldn’t love to ride across the country to Mardi Gras on their Hogs?), Up In Smoke (one of the classic comedies of all-time), Friday and Next Friday (Day-Day rules!), Gladiator (not the Russell Crowe flick…the one w. Cuba Gooding, Jr.), Diggstown, The Hustler, and if you’re a horror buff, you’ve probably seen these already, but The Shining, The Exorcist, The Omen and The Blair Witch Project (not the lame-ass sequel either). As far as the previously mentioned ones, Slap Shot is the best comedy/sports flick of all-time. Who doesn’t LOVE the Hanson Brothers? The Program kicks ass, Taxi Driver and the Godfather movies are certainly up there (or pretty much anything with DeNiro except that stupid Midnight Run) and now that I think about it you might want to do a search of The Top Ten T-Movies of all-time.

Hey, nice to see some Kubrick fans out there. How about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE? Lotsa great ones mentioned already. Here’s a few more. MEAN STREETS is a another Scorsese film with DeNiro, Keitel and some great rock 'n roll. As TC mentioned before, COOL HAND LUKE is a great T-flick. If you’re looking for humor, SPINAL TAP is also a classic. Any of you guys hear about APOCALYPSE NOW being re-released in theatres with additional footage?

(A little correction…it’s “The JOY Luck Club…” I said “Good…” )…anyway…T…I’ve often given that a LOT of thought. What makes it so tough is that what I find so great about movies is their ability to take my soul to so many different places and to cause me to reflect on not only life, but on myself. No one film does that. So…“Glory” may make me proud of who I am while “First Knight” takes me to a place of Honor, Trust and Love. “The Andy Hardy Films” may show me the energy and innocence of youth, while “Boys Don’t Cry” shows me that youth can be full of nothing but pain; “The Terminator” may show me the “future” of War and “Saving Private Ryan” gives me glimpses of it’s reality. Then…with all this “heaviness”…Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan will simply entertain me…or Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly will dance a dance and sing a song that make you feel as though I can fly…enough dribble, T! The guys may start thinking I’ve been getting Estrogen injections and watching “The Bridges of Madison County!” :)----!!!

My favorites are anything by the Coen brothers. I also like ‘Amazon Women on the Moon’.

Here are a few to try, The Deer Hunter, The Game, Rocky Horror Picture Show, all the Sean Connery James Bond movies, Scent of a women, The Blues Brothers, Mad Max, Mad Max 2 (The Road Warrior), Braveheart, all the Bruce Lee movies.

Double Vote for “BraveHeart” and “The Deer Hunter”…
