Vibram Five Fingers

Quick update: just spent the weekend in the Appalachian Mountains and put the Five Fingers to the test- 5 mile hike over some of the roughest terrain I’ve been on in years. My ability to trek over all the steep slopes, rocks, and roots was improved, maintained a fast pace too. For the first time hiking I felt like I didn’t need my trekking poles. No foot blisters or joint pain from the excursion!

Also my corns are starting to fade away.
How much weight were you supporting? I only ask because I wonder how good they’d be for longer treks.

How about those with flat feet? They make me cringe just thinking about it…

I’ve been using my 5.0s for a few months now and my nearly nonexistant arch has visibly improved. My overpronation is still terrible, but I’ve had no signs of my formerly chronic shinsplints so far.

Q for everyone with the Vibrams: do they sell socks that can go with them? I’ll never be able to use them for Army PT if not.

I was carrying a 20lb pack, but felt like I could go heavier. As others have said these things are undiscovered gold mines! Too bad Oprah is such a fatty, otherwise the VFFs would be one of her “favorite things”. If you’ve had trouble with your knees and this has prevented you from squatting, wear em for a month and you’ll feel at home under the bar.

Cant say I’ve tried them as im still saving up to get my Vibrams but I’ve heard a lot of people mention wearing them with their Vibrams.

I don’t know if you could get away with those even with socks.

I’m sticking with Free’s for military related things.

Judging by your avatar, that’s not too encouraging ;]

Vibram sells Injinji socks for use with VFFs http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/products_injinji_socks.cfm

I’m going to get some, even if they don’t feel right with the Fives I can wear them with my other barefoot shoes, my Vivo Barefoots.

How do you like the Vivo barefoots? I was seriously considering those at one time but wussed out because it was so much money and afraid they wouldn’t be the right size.

I love my Vivos, they look like normal shoes so you can wear them places where you can’t get away with the VFFs- like work. Be aware that they’re sized one whole size smaller than most shoes. Just buy one size larger than you’d normally wear and you’ll be fine.

quick hijack, and I apologize in advance.
Hog Ear is that an Ironmind Red-Nail in your avatar? if so congratulations!

end hijack.

In terms of size accuracy, how’d you rate them?

I’m interested to get them to replace my broken sandals but i’m afraid they’re too big or small…
Just touch back on this point, I know Hog Ear had answered, but does anyone have experience with the higher end of the sizes?

I wear a 12 in Converse All-Stars, and actually, my right foot is more comfortable in a 12.5, but the biggest size in Vibrams is 12, so I’d be pushing it.

I was hoping to pick up a pair in the next few weeks. Any thoughts?

Hey Miroku, yes it’s an Ironmind Red nail. I was into steel bending a few years ago, one of my more reckless pursuits. Thanks!

£70 pounds UK - Having had a bit of a google and a read about them I’m getting quite tempted. They look great for bouldering.

Wonder if I could attach crampons …

Kinda what I was thinking. But seriously, crampons? LNT man. why would you want to scratch up and chip a great boulder problem or route? Unless you’re thinking of going alpine climbing…

Winter is on it’s way bro - the snow is coming and the Alps are calling. I’ve just put a new rack of ice tools together, got a couple of Black Diamond axe’s that didn’t see nearly enough ice last year and my crampons have been sharpened.

First trip of the season in a couple of weeks - Just a break in walk on the Snowdon Horseshoe. Cairngorms in Scotland planned for January and who knows where else through the winter. I want another bash at Mt Blanc too next year maybe from the Italian side this time.

Winter rocks!
Post pictures please! I want to go hiking in Scotland but all my relatives there are all too lazy to go up any of the munros. So I’ve only seen pictures but it’s gorgeous country.

There are places you can try them on to get the right sizing. If you’re in Manhattan it looks like there are 2 places:

What bothers me about this thread is the first and only pic you see of the shoes are the cream/orange Sprints, they look, well a tad sissy! TC would smack me upside the head if I showed up at his place for a poker game wearing these things. I’m sure they’re good for stamp collecting and earth worm hunting though. Why couldn’t the 1st image on this thread be of the manly black or brown KSO model?! Now that’s a T-Man’s shoe! Had to get that off my chest.

actually you have to take into consideration with the gaps around your toes.
i’m usually a size 10 but i think i need a 10 woman…

This is what I’m talking about.

Real men wear Dr. Martens…with steel toes…for ‘partying’.
