Vert/Speed Training Thread

Oh, here’s a pic from my ultimate frisbee playing days so you know I’m not full of shit about being able to jump a little bit.

^^^ Man, no offense but in that pic you’re barely higher than the fat chic wearing #53’s knees. That’s maybe a foot and a half. Being 6’8" means if you can get 2’ off the ground you should be able to do a variety of trick dunks. Not saying you can’t jump some, but that’s probably not the best pic.

i’d say tallguy’s pic looks around 24" or so… his flat foot would be ~6" above knee or so.

some nice dunks from last night, didn’t really have that amp’d up mojo but landed some really hard ones.

What’s the best home grown way to measure my vertical? I’d like to chart the progress.

Stand beside a wall and reach as high as you can with the preferred reaching arm. Record length. Easy if you just get a tape measure and tape it to the wall. Jump with a piece of tape around your finger and jump as high as you can.

Height reached - standing height reached = vertical jump.
Thanks. I was hoping to do it at home, but my ceilings are 8 ft tall. Even in the attic, the highest point is 9 ft.

If you can touch backboard, you can estimate within a few inches. Standard rim is 10’ (the one in your gym SHOULD be 10’) so slap the board as high as possible and have someone look at where you get to.
This is the approach I’m going to take. I’ve got an empty college gym to practice at every day all summer. When I finally touch rim again at 240+ lbs, I think maybe I’ll be able to dunk when I cut back to 205, 10%'ish bodyfat. But that’s purely speculation.

Oh damn yeah!

wrote about it in my log but… I havent been working out or anything in two weeks. been moving and to say that my diet has been absolute shit would be a huge understatement… but I went back in there today and was feeling great. Got my first two handed rim grabs today and it was no problem.

last time I tried I could barely knick the rim with both my middle fingers while reaching with two hands and today and grabbed rim every time. I was super pumped. Did about 5 or 6 of them and they all felt great. Weighed in at 207.5-208 today which was what I was at before the move but I am definitely a little softer than I was before :frowning:

Gonna get myself back in check this week and get after it. I really think i’ll be able to throw one down soon.

Greg how tall are you?

very nice dude, gonna be sick seeing you throw one down.

get it

Without shoes on Im 5’11 1/4" and my reach is exactly 90.5 inches with my right hand (better reach with my “good” shoulder)

I guess with shoes on I might be 1 inch higher? My gym shoes are Nike Frees so they’re not very tall at all.

Still it’s pretty impressive so far for a guy at your height. Creating some good leg power.

Thanks man. I’m really excited… I feel like I’m pretty close. I’ll be keeping everyone updated on my progress though.

You had some nice two handers in your video. Looks like you’ve got them down a lot more since last time. They look smooth and you were putting a few of em down hard. Sick

thanks. I felt good today. I’ve been working on trying to lift/jump more explosively. ADQ and WF gave me some pointers since my first rim hang video on a faster approach and more arm swing. I feel like that is helping a lot.

I still havent added in any plyo anything lately. I might eventually but as of right now I’m gonna stick with what I’m doing and see how that goes.

Awesome seeing you progress the way you are in this thread. You should be dunking by the summer at this rate.

Props Greg. The fact that you did anything other than take a nap on the court with that song in the background makes it even more impressive.

Thanks Sam. I’m trying to catch up to these other guys in here.

Hahaha^^ when I rewatched the video yesterday I was thinking “man that song blows”

Usually I hook up my iPhone to the speaker system when I’m in their and listen to my own music but can’t do that and film at the same time

Keep working on getting more speed on your run-up, and a good one-two step onto your stronger leg. With practice you’ll get better at transferring the horizontal speed into vertical. If your running start vert isn’t substantially better than standing vert, that’s just a technique problem.

You’ll need to get about 8" above rim to be able to really jam it, so you’re probably around 4" off from throwing down with some authority.

Your gym has a community IPOD jack? That’s bad to the bone.

theres a hook up in this side closet thing that they use for the arobic and zumba classes. it only plays the music in the basketball court area… its pretty cool. I dont know if I’m technically supposed to/allowed to use it? But I do anyway and no one has said anything.

Did not realize how out of shape I am cardiovascular wise in today’s sprint and jump training. I really didn’t feel I got much done because I was fairly gassed. Have to keep working at it!

this still is boss, caught it on left side of hoop and dunked it with right, in the weirdest motion, looks sick

^^^That is a cool pic. Look’s like a tip dunk, only no one’s around.
